| if y’all couldn’t get enough of jett yearwood in rwylm, then i have good news!!! after months of debating & arguing with myself in my head, i’ve decided to make a separate blog to write drabbles for jett & soarynn :))
i don’t know how often i will be able to write for them as soarynn & coriolanus will always be my main focus but i just love jett too much to leave him out to dry. he’s my cowboy.
i expanded on their relationship in my book ‘right where you left me’ which is linked on my main blog @slaymitchabernathy.
these drabbles will not be perfectly aligned with rwylm, the same way my other drabbles don’t perfectly align with SWMA. there will be various changes & lapses, maybe soarynn never lived with the snows or was in the games.
hopefully, i actually write some stuff over here instead of just letting my drafts pile up, but i can’t wait to expand on district twelve soarynn bc i just love writing her!!! |
here is my masterlist for this blog
if y'all want to know when i post over here, please comment on my tag list :)
| this drabble takes place after soarynn & jett's first time together in rwylm | this drabble contains sexual content ;) |
Jett woke up to the sun shining in his eyes, peeking through the curtains of the window in Soarynn’s bedroom.
His bedroom, technically.
Last night, she had asked him to move in with her. Jett happily agreed, knowing that he wanted nothing more than to wake up next to her every morning with her wrapped up in his arms. Safe and sound. He looks down next to him to see Soarynn curled up against his side, her face pressed up against his bare chest.
She looks beautiful. She’s always been beautiful.
Jett vaguely remembers Mrs. Nightingale, but he remembers what a pretty lady she had been. He remembered going to the Nightingale’s new house with his dad to see the new baby. How the country was on the verge of a war, but that didn’t stop a baby from coming.
His own baby brother was safe at home with his mom. Jessup was born in December, five months older than Soarynn. Jett remembers being so amazed at how big the Mayor’s house was, and how he had been ushered into the living room while Mr. Nightingale frantically rushed up and down the stairs. His dad had gone upstairs, telling Jett to sit tight while they figured everything out.
And Jett remembered hearing three screams that night.
One from Mrs. Nightingale before her life left her body.
One from Soarynn who came into the world, screaming as all babies do.
And the last one from Glen Nightingale, a man who had just lost a wife but gained a daughter.
Glen Nightingale raised Soarynn as well as any man could. He raised her to be kind and selfless. And Soarynn grew to be beautiful. She’d always been beautiful, even as a little boy, Jett always thought so. Jessup thought so, too.
When Jessup got pulled in the Reaping, Jett felt so helpless. Jessup had been so close to making it through the Reaping, but so far. But Jett believed in his little brother, he believed that if anyone could survive, it would be Jessup.
But he also felt some sort of relief. Relief in knowing that if Jessup didn’t survive, then their family would no longer have to deal with his short temper and outbursts. Jessup hadn’t been the same since mom died. No one had, but Jett and Bea handled their grief differently, more maturely.
Dad took a little longer, but who wouldn’t after losing their spouse?
He and Glen had bonded over the loss of their wives, and then Glen grieved over a different loss. The loss of his daughter. She wasn’t dead, she was taken.
They had all assembled in the square for a mandatory speech from the President, a man Jett loathed from the moment he laid eyes on him. He hated his entire family, too, simply because they were related to him. Then the Nightingales had gone to have a small dinner with the Snows, with the promise of Jett and his dad coming over to their house later that night to talk about how things went.
Jett would never forget how distraught Glen Nightingale looked that night. Sobbing for his daughter, who had been taken from him and whisked away from the Capitol. Two months later, she was being introduced by Lucky Flickerman as the Diamond of the Capitol and the future wife of Coriolanus Snow.
Evil, evil people.
So when Soarynn’s name was the next name pulled in the Reaping, Jett had a horrible feeling that this would not end well. Jessup had developed some sort of infatuation with Soarynn since she left, always bringing her up even if it made others uncomfortable. So when they were allowed a few moments alone with him, Jett and Mr. Yearwood stressed the importance of his leaving Soarynn alone if at all possible.
If he couldn’t do that, then he’d need to protect her because heaven knows what she’d be up against. Jessup, of course, didn’t keep his word, that idiot. He went crazy, tried to kill her with nightlock berries, and hunted her down in the woods. The poor thing looked terrified, and in the end, she killed him and won the Hunger Games.
Jett was somewhat pleased with the outcome. District Twelve had somewhat of a Victor now, and the only other person he cared about in the Games had survived. He missed his little brother, though, his jokes, his laugh, his partnership in hunting. But he’d have to wait for his body to be returned.
So when Jessup and Soarynn came back together, well, Jett couldn’t believe it.
His dad told him about her return when he got home from work, and Jett nearly fell out of his chair. Apparently, she was stricken with grief, mourning the loss of her friend and her old life she had been forced out of. Jett couldn’t imagine it, being forced to convert to a certain way of life just to be sent back at a moment’s notice. And he knew Soarynn would blame herself for everything, for Jessup, for being sent back.
She was too good for this world.
He had gone with his dad to try and visit her, but according to Glen, she rarely ever left her room. But Jett just had to see her, to know in his mind that she hadn’t been a figment of his childhood imagination. So he had gone upstairs, carefully opening her bedroom door to see a head of blonde hair poking out from underneath the covers.
He only dared to take another step in, to take a closer look. Her hair looked nearly white, but the color was slowly growing out. Her small face was still covered in freckles, and she was so, so quiet as she slept. That had been enough for him, so he let her be and promised himself that he’d come back when she was feeling better.
What he hadn’t expected was to find Soarynn sitting in the meadow months later, in the cold on a Sunday morning. But there she was, beautiful as ever. Jett made her tag along, and he enjoyed her company immensely. She looked different, and he bet she felt different, too. Ever since then, he’d been a man on a mission to win her heart and prove to her that she was not broken or undeserving of love.
He took her to the Hob, taught her how to hunt. He loved spending time with Soarynn, hearing her laugh, and seeing her smile. She was absolutely perfect. And when he showed up at her house late one night, she let him spend the night and took care of him as if they were married.
Jett loved spending the night in Soarynn’s house, simply because it meant being in her presence. He liked watching her cook or paint. He liked watching her when she thought he wasn’t watching, when she was in her own little world. Jett loved holding her in his arms when they lay on the sofa, making fun of the Capitol news. He loved tickling her to make her laugh. And he loved picking her up, grabbing her by the thighs as she wrapped her legs around his waist and kissed him silly.
Their first kiss had been something else. Jett had kissed enough girls to know that he was finally kissing the right girl. The love of his life.
He’d loved Soarynn since he found her in the meadow that day, but he kept it to himself because he could see how scared she still was. Jett didn’t mind being patient, just holding her hand instead of having a heated makeout behind the Hob. He didn’t mind sleeping in the guest room instead of in her bed. He didn’t mind because he loved her, and who doesn’t do whatever it takes for the person they love?
He also worried that he might scare or hurt her. Soarynn was small compared to him, and Jett wasn’t oblivious to his size. So he was always sure to be gentle with her, even in the heat of the moment. And there had only been a handful of moments.
Like the one time when he was already running late to work so, Soarynn thought it would be a great idea to bend over to grab his boots for him while wearing just his pullover and no pants, giving him an eyeful of something that left his pants too tight. He, of course, didn’t act on that primal urge.
He did kiss her, with her back against the door and her soft hands in his hair. He loved it when she’d scratch his hair, her nails getting all the right spots.
But then Soarynn surprised him. It had been pouring last night, and Jett feared the worst as he trekked to her house. When he finally made it inside, the power was out, and Soarynn was nowhere to be found. Not even Petunia, her beloved cat, whom Jett loved all the same. But she had been in the closet, and she was okay, so he was okay.
Then she made him change out of his wet clothes with no kiss hello. But Soarynn was nit-picky about things like that, and who was he to push her? So when he came back to her room in only his boxers and found her in nothing but her underwear, well, Jett knew he was in for something else when it came to dating Soarynn. She was unlike anything else he had ever experienced.
She made the act of sex such an intimate moment while still being able to laugh about it. And Soarynn felt so fucking good. He knew she was a virgin, she had asked him if he was a virgin, which caught him off guard. Soarynn wasn’t one for those types of questions, but she was coming out of her shell more and more each day.
She had later told him about her one sexual encounter with Coriolanus Snow and how she had—in her opinion—foolishly saved herself for him. Jett’s heart broke for Soarynn and all she had been through. So when she asked him to make love to her, he knew it was the greatest honor to be trusted by her. He took things nice and slow, putting her pleasure before his own.
He would always do that.
She looked so beautiful under him, and so confident, nothing like the girl he’d stumbled upon in the meadow. Soarynn clearly took care of her outward appearance. She was so soft and smooth, and she always smelled like vanilla, a faint scent Jett had associated with Mrs. Nightingale until Soarynn had come back home.
Now, the scent of vanilla consumed his entire being. He couldn’t get enough of Soarynn, the gasps she let out, the way her back bent off the bed, how her nails scratched down his back. How his name sounded like a hymn as it fell from her lips. He loved this girl with every fiber of his being, and he was hell-bent on protecting her and keeping her safe from harm’s way, even if it meant he got hurt in the process.
They had told each other that they loved each other, hearing it from her lips was the sweetest sound Jett had ever heard. And to make things even better, he would get to spend every night with her now.
He carefully traces her jawline with his finger, feeling the soft skin on her face. Soarynn has so many freckles, and Jett would be content in counting every single one for the rest of his life if he could. Her dainty hand is spread across his chest, and he notices how bare her ring finger is. He’d change that, one day.
Jett knew Soarynn was his promised future, his life, and growing old with her sounded like the best thing in the world. Even if they weren’t rich, it didn’t matter as long as they had each other.
Jett carefully lifts up the covers far enough to see their bodies tangled with one another below the sheets. Jett had cleaned them up to the best of his abilities after Soarynn fell asleep. They were both still naked, and Soarynn was a sight for sore eyes. Soarynn hadn’t gone into much detail about her sexual entanglements with Coriolanus Snow, only that he ate her out and fingered her after she’d given him head.
Jett prided himself on being a good lover to Soarynn, and that included taking care of her in the bedroom, so he ever so carefully slips under the covers. Soarynn’s legs were easy to maneuver, and he prys them apart, lying between them with a gorgeous sight in front of him. When he had first seen her cunt last night, she was dripping wet for him, and he nearly came there and then.
It seemed that every part of Soarynn was beautiful, even between her legs.
Jett licks his lips, wondering if she tastes as sweet as she looks. Probably, he thinks, gently wrapping his hands around her thighs as he gets closer to her cunt. He doesn't want to startle her, so he starts with soft kitten licks around her clit. Soarynn shifts in her sleep, her hips slightly rising.
Then he licks a stripe up her cunt, surprised she's already wet. Soarynn lets out a small moan as she wiggles in her sleep, clearly still somewhat dreaming. Jett continues his assault on her cunt, licking up and down, even sticking his tongue in. Soarynn was breathing heavier now, almost awake. Jett knew what she needed. He found out very quickly last night that Soarynn’s clit was the key to her undoing.
One hard pinch and she unraveled.
He wraps his lips around her clit and gives it a hard suck, and that's what wakes Soarynn up. She wakes with a gasp, her hands flying down and grabbing his hair, tugging at it. Jett continues to work on her clit, tugging at it with his teeth. Soarynn rips open the covers and looks down at him, her face contorted in pleasure.
“Jett,” she gasps, her legs trembling as he holds them open. Jett smirks as her eyes roll back, watching her every move as he eats her out like s starved man. He finally pulls his mouth from her clit, “Mornin’ darlin’.”
Soarynn whimpers, her hands coming to rest on his forearms, “Good…good morning,” she squeaks as he flicks his tongue over her clit.
Soarynn was getting close, and they both knew that. “Jett,” she moans, “Jett, I…I want you to fuck me.”
Jett feels like he got punched in the throat. He looks up at her, his eyes wide, his plan suddenly…foiled? “Are…are you sure?” He asks, figuring she was probably a little sore from last night. Soarynn nods, her eyes hazy with lust.“
Unless you wanna do something else,” she says with a shrug. Jett doesn't need to be told twice. He quickly climbs over her, capturing her lips in a heated kiss. “Get on your stomach, darlin’, it’s gonna feel much better,” he says against her lips.
Soarynn shoots him an unsure look, but does as she was told and flips onto her stomach. Jett grabs her waist, pulling her up to her knees, her face smushed in her pillow. He lets out a groan as he sees her dripping cunt. “You’re perfect, Soarynn,” he tells her, grabbing his cock and lining it up with her entrance, “absolutely perfect.”
He carefully sank it in, not wanting to hurt or scare her. She had been an extremely tight fit last night, and Jett swore he saw stars when he first entered her. He sees them again this time as he bottoms out, both of them moaning at the feeling. Jett hears Soarynn swear under her breath.
“Feelin’ better than last night?” He teases, grabbing her hips. Soarynn looks at him from over her shoulder, a smile on her lips, “Well, considering I’m going off of just last night, I can’t say just yet. But give it your best shot, cowboy.”
The sudden nickname spurrs something inside of him that he's never felt before. “You sure you can take it?” He asks, slowly pulling out the tip, just catching her entrance. Soarynn moves her hips back and forth, “Mhm.”
Well, it was her funeral.
Jett slams into her, relishing in the moans she lets out. Jett picks up the pace, going hard and fast, and Soarynn takes everything he gives her. He watches, enamored as her cunt wraps snugly around his cock, barely letting him pull out. He hits that sweet spot inside of her every thrust, listening to Soarynn’s cries.
Jett has never seen Soarynn from this angle, but he swears to himself here and now that he’d take her like this once a week if she’d let him. She looks gorgeous, her face pressed into the pillow, her back arched, her nails gripping the sheets. “You feel so good,” he says, one of his hands squeezing her ass.
He smiles, loving how she looks when he makes her feel good. To know he fulfilled not only her emotional needs, but also her sexual needs lit up something inside of Jett that had been dark before Soarynn. Before she nestled her way into his heart, and their lives became tangled with one another.
Jett’s hands travel from her ass down to her lower stomach, knowing if he pushes down there, then Soarynn will go crazy, and that’s when he feels it.
Jett swallows as he continues to thrust into her, and slightly feels the tip of his cock through her lower abdomen. “Put your hand right here,” he whispers in her ear, feeling Soarynn’s tiny hand cover his own large one. Jett pulls his hand away and adores the gasp Soarynn let out when she finally feels it.
“So big,” she moans, her entire body shaking as she gets closer and closer to her peak. Jett increases the pace, the sound of their skin slapping is the only sound throughout the house.
He gently grabs her neck, lifting her head up to press a sloppy kiss to her lips. “I love you,” he whispers, biting her bottom lip. Soarynn whimpers as his fingers go down to her clit, rubbing it in tight circles. “I love you, too,” she says, her breaths getting more erratic. Jett was close to tipping over, but he doesn't want to do it without Soarynn hitting her peak first, she deserves to feel good always.
One swift pinch to her clit is all it takes to send Soarynn tumbling off the edge, and she gasps into the kiss, pulling away as she hits her orgasm.
Jett watches as her eyes roll to the back of her head, her mouth open in a silent scream. She looks beautiful. Jett chases right after her, coating her walls as he finishes inside of her with a groan and her name spilling from his lips.
They both collapse, Jett’s arms on either side of Soarynn’s body as he makes sure not to crush her with his weight. Soarynn pants, slowly coming down from her high. Jett presses a kiss under her ear, “You’re somethin’ else, you know that?”
Soarynn laughs, looking up at him from over her shoulder, “Takes one to know one.”
Jett grins, kissing her cheek as he carefully pulls them both up onto their knees, “Gotta pull out darlin’, it might be messy.” Soarynn’s hand finds his as he slowly pulls out, swearing as his cum runs down her thigh. “Oh,” Soarynn whispered, “I never thought it would look like that.”
Jett wraps his arm around her waist. “Does it live up to your standards?” He laughs as she tries to push him away. “I simply can’t believe I’ve just had sex with a grown-ass man, is all,” she explains, rolling her eyes as she lies back down, this time on her back. Jett watches as she leisurely stretches out her limbs, letting out a small yawn.
Soarynn truly is a stunning creature in all her naked glory. Her legs are smooth and long, her stomach is toned, her breasts are just the right size for her frame, and her face...well, Jett could stare at her face all day if she’d let him.
And he does try. She’ll catch him looking down at her when they walk home from the mines. Soarynn had started waiting for him, and Jett thought it was the sweetest thing ever. There was nothing like getting off a long shift, and the first thing you see is Soarynn’s beautiful face.
He used to look forward to seeing the sunlight, but Soarynn was sunlight. Her laugh and smile lit up the room, her singing warmed your bones, and her touch lit a flame on your skin. Jett loved his sunlight.
“Well, I’m glad you enjoyed yourself,” Jett says, lying down next to her, shoulder to shoulder, hip to hip. Jett is considerably taller than her and most people in general. But he loves being able to tower over her and take control, to be able to pick her up with ease and let her wrap her limbs around him as she pleases. To shield her and protect her from any threat, big or small.
Jett rests his hand on her stomach. “What if I just got you pregnant?”
Soarynn raises her eyebrows as she looks down at her currently very flat and normal-looking stomach. “Well, I guess we’d have to get married really fast,” she replies, her hand coming to rest on top of his. Jett grins, “I like the sound of that.”
They both go quiet for a minute, simply basking in their after-sex glow and each other’s company. Jett finds himself pining for her company more and more these days, simply wanting to be near her. He didn’t mind if they weren’t even in the same room. There were times when he’d be downstairs in the kitchen and she’d be upstairs in her little art studio, and he was perfectly content.
He presses a kiss to her temple. “Darlin’, I hope you know that I plan on lovin’ you for a long, long time.”
| "In a life where we work out, there's a house up on a hill. A front porch going all of the way round and a, flower pot on the windowsill. We sit and watch the sunset while the kids play in the field, 'cause in a life where we work out, there's a house up on a hill. I still call you, "Darlin', " you still call me, "Babe", I smile in the mirror when I say my new last name, You take me out dancin' on the weekend that you don't sing..." |
A soft breeze blows through the valley, cooling the hairs on the back of Soarynn's neck. She welcomes it, though, remembering a time when she didn't think it would all work out. She thought she'd be stuck in the Capitol forever, locked away in the Snows Mansion like a songbird in a golden cage. They liked her until they didn't, until she became a killer, forced to defend herself in the Hunger Games.
Soarynn didn't think it could have gotten any worse after that, but they surprised her. They sent her back. Left her on the train platform to pick up the pieces. Soarynn was a mess when she first came back home, riddled with guilt and nightmares of what she did to Jessup in that arena.
Only when she allowed herself to open up again did she start to feel better. She has Jett to thank for that; he was the one who broke through her walls and taught her to trust again. To love again. It wasn't easy, though. There were bumps in the road, one being Coriolanus Snow himself, who just couldn't seem to let her go.
He tormented her for a long while. Blowing up the mines, showing up in Victor's Village, he was even in her childhood home when she gave birth to her daughter. Wren was born into a world of unknown circumstances, sweet like her mother and looking just like her father.
Soarynn had seen the way Coriolanus looked at Wren, how just for a moment, he was able to imagine what life would've been like for them if it all worked out. She's sure they could've had a grand life with children and parties, but she knows she would've been miserable in the end. All things that shine will eventually rust, and Coriolanus has no issues throwing out old belongings like they mean nothing to him.
He'd get rid of her eventually.
The more she thinks about it, the more Soarynn realizes that this life is the only way things could have worked out for everyone. Coriolanus returned to the Capitol with Livia and his children, and Soarynn was left to raise her own children in peace.
"Momma, look! I found a ladybug!"
Soarynn looks up from her book and watches her son Tom run towards her, a bright smile on his face. Tom looks just like his father, he has his brown eyes and sweet smile. He holds his index finger out, and Soarynn can see a little ladybug hanging on precariously to his finger.
"You know what they say about ladybugs?" She asks him, laughing when he shakes his head. Tom looks rather disappointed that he doesn't know about ladybugs, but that's okay. Soarynn will teach him about all the good things in life.
"If you blow on em', then you can make a wish," she patiently explains. Tom gasps excitedly, he loves blowing on wishing flowers, so this is big news for the four-year-old. Soarynn still can't believe that he's already four. It feels like he was just a little baby yesterday, the apple of her eye.
He squeezes his eyes shut and blows with all his might. The ladybug opens its wings and flies away, carried by the breeze. "What'd you wish for?"
"I wished for another baby sister."
Soarynn gasps in a teasing manner, "Another sister? You don't like the one you've got?" Truth be told, Soarynn is perfectly content with her two children. She also doesn't know if she can get pregnant again; there were apparently some complications with the birth that she only found out about after Wren was born. Thankfully, her baby girl was just fine, but according to the doctor, it's nearly impossible to conceive again.
Jett loves to joke that anything is possible if you try hard enough, but Soarynn isn't too sure about that.
"I wanna play with her, Momma," he whines. Soarynn sighs, looking down at the basket she brought with them. Wren is sound asleep in the basket, swaddled with blankets, oblivious to the world around her. She's still so small and sweet, but not quite ready to start walking yet. "She's still a baby, honey. You can always play with Bea or your friends."
Bea is Tom's aunt and absolutely adores the little boy. Even though she's much older than he is, she still loves to play with him. "What's the point of havin' a baby if you can't play with it?"
"She ain't a babydoll, son."
Soarynn and Tom both turn around and look up the hill where Jett's voice just came from. He grins down at them, still wearing his uniform from work, covered in coal dust. "Daddy! You made it!" Tom bounds up the hill to meet his father, shrieking with laughter when Jett picks him up and throws him in the air. Soarynn watches with a fond look on her face, so thankful that it all worked out in the end.
"Careful with your shoulder," she calls out, remembering how she thought Jett might lose his arm after getting hurt in a planned explosion by Coriolanus. He was the last man the crawl out of that collapsed mine, and Soarynn thought she might never let him go back to work after that.
"Shoulders just fine, darlin', see?" Jett flexes his arm, showing off his muscles. "Don't come whinin' to me when it feels sore tonight," she replies, getting back to her book. She feels Jett before she hears him, but he's always been able to sneak up on her, especially in the meadow or the woods. His lips press right under her ear, making her giggle.
"Look so pretty," he mumbles, nuzzling her jaw, "luckiest man alive."
Soarynn smiles at his sweet words because he means them. With Coriolanus, she never knew if he meant what he said or if he was just using her.
"I'm the lucky one," she says, looking into his eyes, "how was your day?" Jett settles into the tall grass next to her so they can both watch Tom run around the meadow, set on catching a butterfly. "It was fine, Gus almost got fired." Her eyes widen when she hears that Gus almost got the boot. He's been working in the mines since she was a baby.
"What'd he do?"
"More like what he didn't do," Jett says, rubbing his face, "apparently he didn't write some guys up for showin' up late. Peacekeepers caught wind of it." District Twelve has the smallest Peacekeeper force out of all the Districts, and they're definitely the most lenient as well. It takes a lot for them to get involved.
"Is he okay?"
"Yeah, they gave him and the guys a warnin' and said if it happens again, they'll have to bring it to the Mayor."
They both know who the Mayor is. Soarynn's father and she highly doubts he'd fire Gus. Her father is a saint, all things considered, and does his best to give people the benefit of the doubt. He's also a little terrified of Gus, mostly because he only has one eye. Soarynn isn't too fond of the man either. Jett's father considers Gus a sworn enemy and avoids the man at all costs.
"At least you weren't late," she says, bumping her elbow with his. Soarynn has been walking Jett to work since she can remember. She started before they even dated, just enjoying his company after months of locking herself away from the world. Now, she and their entire family walk him to work, and then they go their separate ways. Soarynn heads into town to do some errands. Sometimes it's swinging by the Hob, other times she heads to the bakery, or visits her father.
"Yeah, we both know you'd blow a gasket if I were late," Jett teases.
Soarynn believes in punctuality, no matter where she lives. Capitol or District, she won't be late.
"Can't blame a girl for being timely."
Tom runs back over to them, carrying wildflowers that grow in the spring and summer. "Got you some flowers, Momma!"
Soarynn takes the flowers from him, bringing them to her nose to smell the sweet scent. "Thank you, honey. They're beautiful."
Jett grunts in agreement, "We'll have to put em' in a vase when we get home." Soarynn's heart beats a little faster at the idea of their home, the place she feels the safest. It didn't feel that way for the longest time. The house she got after winning the Hunger Games was huge, brand new, with all the bells and whistles. She missed her childhood home and the warmth it brought. Only when Jett moved in with her did it start to feel like a proper home.
Now, it's perfect. She watches the sunset on the front steps, bakes muffins on Sunday mornings, and does laundry in the backyard with Petunia.
"Thought I might go on a hunt Saturday mornin' if you're up for it."
"That should be fine," Soarynn says, brushing her hair back when the wind whips through it. "I'll just have to make sure someone can watch the kids." Soarynn might have healed from her past, but that doesn't mean she's let her guard down. She's prepared to die for her children, and that means never letting them out of her sight without someone she trusts to look over them. It takes a village, and they're lucky to have one.
Dorothea loves the children and doesn't mind looking over them, but she's been pretty busy these days with Marcus, her fiancé. Bea isn't looking to get married anytime soon, so she should be able to come watch them for a few hours.
Soarynn doesn't care for the hunting as much as she enjoys spending time with Jett. The woods bring her peace, a place away from the rest of the world where the Capitol can't reach her. Not even Coriolanus Snow would dare to step into the woods, untamed by man. In the woods, she's a guest.
"Figured we should start gettin' ready for winter. It'll be here before we know it." Soarynn purses her lips just thinking about the bitter cold and snow that will cover the meadow before too long. Their house not only has cool air in the summer, but also heating in the winter, along with a large fireplace. They have it the easiest in Twelve, but others can't say the same. Soarynn has seen it before: little babies dying from the cold, people digging for scraps, begging for food.
She does her best to help out, to donate clothes and warm bottles of milk. They have more than enough, but Jett is right to start thinking about stocking up this early. Failing to plan is planning to fail, a mindset Eudora Trinket instilled in her years ago. Soarynn still keeps in touch with Eudora, sending and receiving the occasional letter. The last she heard, Eudora had a baby, a little girl named Effie.
Soarynn's sure Eudora had it all planned down to the last second, knowing how she can be.
"Yeah, it'll come fast like it always does. I was thinkin' maybe we could get a goat for milk." Jett raises his eyebrows, even covered in coal dust, he's so handsome. Jett has the type of beauty most men in the Capitol pay for with his rugged good looks and hard-earned muscles. Soarynn likes a man who isn't afraid to get his hands dirty.
"A goat? Darlin', you wouldn't even know where to put it, let alone do with it." Soaynn shakes her head insistently, set on getting a baby goat before the summer is over. "We could keep it in the yard, or even at your dad's house. They're good for the grass, you know." She also wants chickens, but won't bring that up right now.
One step at a time.
"I'll have to ask around," is all he says, which is better than him shooting the idea down. She leans in and kisses his cheek, not caring about the dust, "Thanks. Best husband ever." Jett snorts at the joke she loves to use, "I'm your only husband."
"Momma, when're we gonna have dinner?"
Their moment is interrupted by a hungry Tom, tuckered out from a day filled with running through the meadow. The weather was far too nice to be inside all day, so Soarynn took the children to the meadow, perched under a willow tree.
"We can head back home right now," Jett decides, groaning when he stands back up, "I've gotta wash up or else I'm gonna be eatin' supper outside." Soarynn rolls her eyes because she only made him do that one time. She takes his hand, though, and dusts off her dress. "Can I carry Wren?"
"I don't think so," she answers, picking up the basket, "we don't need a repeat of what happened the other day." Soarynn made the premature mistake of trusting Tom to carry the baby basket when it was empty just to test it out, and he ended up dropping it down the stairs. Safe to say, Tom won't be holding the baby unsupervised for a long time.
They all make the short trek back to their house. The Victors Village sits atop the hill that leads down to the meadow, a hop, skip, and a jump away from her favorite place in the world. Petunia is waiting for them when they get back home, meowing up a storm.
"Always got somethin' to say, don't you, little lady?" Jett asks Petunia as she rolls onto her back for pets. Petunia loves Jett, she's obsessed with him, which is funny since she hated Coriolanus. There had been one time when Soarynn was out back doing laundry and Coriolanus snuck up on her, cornering her to confront her. Petunia had literally been her saving grace and scared him off.
Turns out the hatred is a mutual feeling.
"Go wash up," Soarynn calls to Tom as he runs upstairs to his room. "I'm gonna take down the sheets and get started on dinner," she tells Jett. She washed all of their bedsheets this morning and hung them out the dry, they're going to smell so good. "Alright, I'll come down when I'm squeaky clean," he says, kissing her forehead.
Soarynn hums, making her way into the kitchen. She turns on the oven before making her way to the backyard. Petunia has been joining her more and more outside. She doesn't ever venture near the woods, even she knows her limits. But she likes to watch the birds and be close to Soarynn.
"Had quite the lazy day, didn't you, Petunia?"
The white feline rolls around in the grass and clovers, paws in the air. Soarynn carefully sets down Wren's basket, not wanting to disturb her sleep if she can help it. While Soarynn takes down the sheets, Petunia chases around a grasshopper, darting through the grass with precision.
A small cry comes from the basket. Wren is awake. "Oh, there you are, sunshine," Soarynn says softly, crouching down in front of the basket. She's met with eyes similar to her own, blue with shades of gray. But she has Jett's brown hair, he already claims that she'll be a great beauty.
Wren looks up at her, fussing like she always does right after waking up. "Good morning, did you sleep well?" Soarynn reaches into the basket and scoops her baby girl up, holding her tightly to her chest. Wren coos at her mother, wrapping her tiny hand around the necklace Jett gifted her last year for her birthday. It's a gold locket with pictures of her parents inside it. She was moved to tears when she first got it, so thoughtful and kind, just like Jett.
"I'm right here," Soarynn says, rocking them side to side, "Momma's here." There are moments when Soarynn wonders what her life would be like if she had married Coriolanus. She knows a few things for certain: she'd never be allowed to be outside while taking down the laundry with any of their children. A marriage with Coriolanus Snow would come with rules and requirements.
If you marry a man for money, he'll make you pay for every cent.
"Don't y'all look pretty?"
Wren perks up at the sound of her father's voice. Soarynn turns, and Jett is squeaky clean just like he promised. He's wearing that stupid cowboy hat he can't get enough of, but he looks pretty damn good in it, so she can't be too mad.
"Look who it is, Wren," Soarynn points at Jett, "look who's here."
Wren hasn't started talking yet, just babbling random bits here and there. Soarynn can't wait to hear what she sounds like. Tom has the cutest twang in his voice, clearly taken from Jett. Soarynn has slowly gotten her own District accent back after years of speaking like a Capitolite.
"My pretty girls," Jett says with a grin, wrapping an arm around Soarynn's waist. She melts into his safe hold and knows that he'd gladly give his life to keep her and their children safe. "She just woke up, so she's bound to be fussy."
"I ain't scared of a little fussin', ain't that right, sweetheart?" He asks, tickling under Wren's chin to make her laugh. The sound of a baby laughing has to be one of the best sounds Soarynn has ever heard.
"I was thinkin' about goin' down to the Hob tomorrow." Soarynn perks up at going to the Hob. Sometimes they'll sing on stage, and other times they'll just dance. Tomorrow's Friday, so it's bound to be busy with the evening crowd. But Jett loves to take her out dancing on the weekends.
"That sounds nice. I can wear my new dress," Soarynn replies, bending back down to set Wren in her basket. Wren kicks her feet once she's lying back down, enamoured by the quilt hanging above her. "Could you please grab Tom's blankets?" She asks Jett. The laundry is fun until it's time to take it down and put it away. "Sure, darlin'. Is it that new purple dress?"
"Yep."
Jett lets out a low whistle that makes her blush. They've been married for years, but he still flirts with her shamelessly as if every day is their first date. "Then I'm gonna have to fight everyone off tomorrow night, then. Heaven knows what'll happen when people see you sportin' a new dress."
Soarynn unclips the quilt from the clothesline and starts folding it. "They won't even bat an eye at me." People used to stare at Soarynn, mostly because she's the spitting image of her mother with her blonde hair. It used to be platinum, almost white, when she lived in the Capitol and dyed it, but now it's grown out to a natural honey blonde.
"They'd be fools not to."
"Momma, I'm all done washin' up!"
Tom stands on the top of the steps, hands on his hips. He looks about ready to eat and then wrestle with Jett on the living room floor before bedtime. "Alright, I'll be right in."
"Why don't you come get your blankets?" Jett calls, holding out Tom's quilt to him. Tom doesn't look too excited about being tasked wth chores this late at night, but Jett and Soarynn have both been very adamant on him not being raised spoiled. Soarynn spent the first five years of her life growing up here, and Jett spent his entire life here. He knows what it's like to struggle, and Soarynn knows what a privilege it is to live the way they do.
"Okay," he sighs, taking his sweet time to go down the steps. Soarynn chuckles when he almost falls over from the sheer size of the folded-up quilt. "Take it all the way up to your room, please," she calls after him. If she's not specific, he'll leave it in the living room for her to find later.
The sun is beginning to set over their house, making for a beautiful night sky. "There go the birds," she says to Wren, "flyin' back home for the night." Their house has the woods behind it, and Soarynn wakes up to bird song every morning. It felt like there weren't any birds in the Capitol, just cars and people.
"Mind if I take you for a quick spin?"
That could mean a lot of things coming from Jett, but turns out he just wanted a quick dance. Soarynn giggles like a shy teenager while he spins her around. Jett is surprisingly good at dancing, a trait he claims to have inherited from his father, who's been known to tear it up at the Hob a few times. He twirls her around with expertise, far from how she'd dance in the Capitol. Everything was so slow and practiced there, but here, she's free.
With the soft grass under her bare feet and Jett's hands on her waist, Soarynn feels happier than ever. They end their dance with a dramatic dip that leads to his lips on hers. Soarynn leans into the kiss, and their lips move in tandem. After all these years, she's got him memorized. His hat falls off, but he doesn't pull away to grab it.
"I love you, Soarynn," he says, "like all-fire."
She smiles, carding a hand through his soft brown hair. He's so sweet to her, so good to their children, so patient with Petunia.
"I love you like all-fire, too, Jett."
In every lifetime, she'd choose this one in a heartbeat.
