" his voice , accompanied by the soft rumble of laughter , like the rolling strike of thunder against darkened clouds ( a promise of gentle rains to come , of skies splitting and weeping their mournful song in the sounds of lightening like gnashing teeth ) and if he were the storm , the sorrowful call of dampened days , then she would be the sun shining . the beckon of light to break through the gray , to bring forth warmth , and cast away the cold that had made its home in the marrow of his bones . the sight of her is sunlight ---- starlight , moonlight , something guiding him through the surrounding darkness , a garden breaking through the cracked stone of his heart ; flowering , and reaching towards her . always , reaching towards her .

he offers a smile , and with it the light twist of the sword in his hand , sweeping the space between them in an elegant arc , following the graceful movement of his wrist ---- before sheathing it at his side , head tilting " i suppose i was in a rush , forgot i was holding it " his head dips , almost shy in her presence , the darkened flush of his cheeks hidden by the sweep of curls against his skin . how the words get stuck in his lungs , lodged in throat , impassible ---- unable to admit to the softness that she has worn away , the sharp edges of his being that she had tenderly carved away , revealing slowly the monstrous thing that lay beneath ; and greeting it , always , with enough tenderness to make his heart ache . he clears his throat , fingertips curling , burning with the need to reach out and trace against the curve of her cheek ; but holding himself back , always holding back , always digging his teeth into that fervent desire , clawing at the yearning that yawns a chasm in his chest . do not take more than you are offered , do not take more than what you deserve , this is how you have learned to survive . in measures of longing that cut through you like knives . i'll come with you if you're sure.

" of course i am sure " his hand against hers is a gentle , cold touch , fleeting ---- like the brush of winter wind against her ( and he does not mean to leech warmth , to harm , to take what has never been rightfully his to own ) the shadows lap at his feet , a dark pool of mist that curls up his legs , winds its way up to thread between their barely touched fingers , binding them together as the darkness purrs and tugs at them both . his breath is a huff of laughter , turning his body to guide hers through the growing and billowing darkness before them , slipping through the shade with all the ease of drawing breath . and when he blinks through the dark , he is met with the warmth of sun on his face , dappled through the swaying canopy overhead . the hard ground beneath his feet turns to the softness of swaying grass , and it seems like he nearly gasps in the air around him . as if he cannot draw in enough of the heavy perfumed air around them . and in his exhale the earth around them sighs with relief , of something lost returned once more , of the dirt and the grass reaching up to welcome him ( and , perhaps , if one looked hard enough they could see it happen ---- the twist and lurch , the yearning stretch of the earth to wrap itself around him gently ) and he pulls his hand away from hers for just a moment , to press his fingers against his forehead and then his lips , a hushed word spilling from his mouth , as if in some silent , secret greeting to the home that holds him now . but just as quickly his hand is returned to hers , a rare smile pulling the corners of his lips as he gazes out towards the lazed roll of the land before them " this is home " his fingers hook through hers , and he begins to gently guide her forward " very few . . . lets call them outsiders , have ever been allowed here " a laugh burbles in his chest , and he seems made anew standing beneath the warmth of the sun . as if something had broken open , and the truth of him had split , and spilled , and lays before her now in all its gentleness . when he speaks his voice is hushed , soft , something like hope lingering in the winding timbre of his " what do you think ? "

it comes to her in waves ― a wash of crimson , a creeping darkness , the delicate press of cool fingertips , a sound like soft thunder echoing in her ears , lulling her into a dreamless , vacant sleep. when was the last time she'd slept ? too long. too much. was it enough ? she hadn't felt a peace like this . . . when was it ? had she ever ? no , this wasn't . . . not that. something else.

she wakes , and it's painless. heavy - lidded , aching , but with a weight to her limbs as if the softness of the bed had brought her something sweeter , something kinder , than the violence that often awaited her behind closed eyelids. as though the terror couldn't reach her wherever it had taken her. a soft groan eases from her as she shifts to sit up , but in the same breath she falls silent , still. the floorboards creak , and she's instantly made aware of the darkness that sinks beneath her skin , like the gentle hum of the night itself slipping into her veins. she sees the massive figure of him from the edges of her vision , what could be mistaken as a phantom lingering at her bedside had she not committed each detail of him to memory , had he not slipped his way into dreams that were a touch gentler to her , if only for the moments he'd appeared in them.

for a moment , he's only met with silence , another heavy breath pushed from her aching lungs as she leans against her headboard. her head tips forward as she takes in the expanse of skin bared by the fallen sheets bunched around her waist , the bruising faint around where a carefully sealed pad of gauze is pressed over her ribcage. stab wound. she remembers the face of the man that twisted the knife into her , recalls the crack of his bones between her fingers and the way his body went limp at her feet. she remembers blood , too much , too fast. she didn't remember the last time she slept , but her body had , weak and worn.

but her bruises were healing , and she had slept , and it was dreamless.

she turns to face him , the silver gleam of his eyes something otherworldly in the soft light that bleeds in from the sleepless city beyond her windows. though it's what's beneath it , the godhood lying in the slopes and curves of his face , the silvered stars peering at her through the dark ― it's the worry woven throughout each marble - carved feature that is almost the same as the blade turned inside of her flesh. a weight that settles onto her chest , a thickness forming in her throat. and it wasn't unlike her to feel the touch of panic , of pain. she'd felt it hundreds , if not thousands of times before him. but it might have been unlike her to want to reach out , to soothe it away with a touch of her own , to shoulder the burden and spare him from it.

instead , she looks away , back to the bruises and the gauze , her fingers tucking in on themselves. ❝ i'm sorry. ❞ her voice comes quietly after a few passing seconds , and she wonders if he knows what she means by it. i'm sorry that you cared , i'm sorry that i didn't. a part of her hopes that he doesn't. another moment passes , and she sighs , tilting her head to look at him once more. the faint smile on her lips doesn't reach her eyes , but she tries to let it. ❝ you know , in my defense , i didn't take you for someone who got scared. ❞

how many battlefields had he wandered ? how many bodies strewn at his feet ---- how many felled by his own sword ? gods and men alike , bowed at the knee in the wake of his cruel destruction . how often had he watched a wound weep around the silvered point of a knife ; stared in utter indifference as men collapsed to the ground , choked on their own blood until their eyes faded to nothingness ( as their souls had risen , to greet him in death , bitterly following at his heels as he led them to the world beyond ---- to whatever next waited for them ) how many , and none had ever roused such a painstaking panic within him ; none had made that bone deep , primitive fear rise like bile in his throat as he watched a lifeless body crumple to the ground , like crumbling pillars weathered by ancient winds . the answer was none , until her .

for the first time in centuries , he had felt utterly useless . incompetent . as flightful as a deer caught in the blinding lights of death ---- stunned and frozen by his own helplessness ( and in his mind , he was a child again , stood at the edge of a forest , watching the retreating form of his father / in his mind , he was a young man again , weeping at the funeral pyre of sunlight's death ) the body had fallen , no more to him than a lifeless carcass ---- less to him than the animal wandered too close to the street . and in its wake she had swayed , a shock of crimson slowly spreading across her skin , and he swore she met his gaze just as she collapsed to the cold earth

he was not a man befit of worrying ---- concern creased the scar of his face strangely , twisting him into something misshapen and frankenstein - esque . mourning , perhaps ; sorrow , those he knew well . those settled heavily into the marrow of his bones , made a home for thousands of years in the cavity of his chest . and rage , indescribable , inhuman rage ; that , he was made well for . that lived , and sang , and blossomed within him . but this was something alltogether new to him , his chest caving in as he lifted her from the ground , as he carried her ---- old , and hallowed prayers to the woman he had come to call his wife moving silently against his lips . her tender hands a ghostly memory over his own as he cleaned , and bandaged , and settled her warmly in her bed . and then he had sat , his head bowed , his palms pressed together , and prayed he wouldn't have to call forth life ; to stare with a watery gaze and ask her to reach her lovely hands into the crux of death and wrench this soul back into life

she stirs , and with it comes the flutter of his own breath , his eyelids flickering as his power seeps and recedes , trickling back into him as she pulls herself from sleep . his fingers flex , idly , unaware of how tightly he had balled his fists until that moment as he watches her rise . watches her confusion , her assessment , her realization , all kaleidoscope across her face in hues of midnight blue . and part of him is relieved , to not have to call for kios and try to explain how exactly he had come to have a dying woman on his hands . not now , not yet , anways ---- even if he knew she would smile , and laugh , and tenderly place her palms against sira's bruised cheeks .

he looses a breath , brows raising and creasing slightly as she speaks " you're . . . sorry , for being stabbed ? i think that's a first " his shoulders roll , the tension pinching his shoulders starting to seep away , trying to force his body away from the worry that had wound him so tightly , his voice a gruff rumble " i'm not . or , not usually . it's been a long time " a long time since that same fear had worked its way into his body . a long time since kios had held his hands , and promised that she would be back , and walked willingly to her death . a long time since he had run through the streets searching for her , since he had found her on the shore , since he had screamed loud enough to make the earth itself tremble .

his gaze flickers across her , tongue pressing roughly against the back of his teeth , tracing the long slope of his canines before clearing his throat " are you . . . how do you feel ? i know someone who can . . . she can help "
