Season 5 - the team knows about Castle and Beckett's relationship but they still keep it all on the DL, even outside of the precinct.
Poker night at the loft had been a great idea! After a long and exhausting case, the team had needed something to perk them up again - and what was better than drinking and laughing (and gambling) with friends?
Beckett excused herself from the table - she had folded early, anyway - and made her way to the kitchen to pick at the leftover pizza from dinner. She leant back against the island counter, watching as Castle, Lanie and Jenny mercilessly trash-talked one another.
The ringing of Castle's phone brought their teasing to a halt. He pulled the device from his pocket and studied the screen.
"Why is Gina calling me?" he asked no one in particular, frustrated by the interruption.
Beckett pushed off the counter. "Oh, didn't you have that dinner-"
Rick threw his cards to the table and leapt from his chair, running off to his room.
"I'm on my way!" he said apologetically as he pressed the phone to his ear.
"I guess we're done then," Lanie said, chuckling.
"No, you guys keep going," Castle called to them as he emerged from his room wearing a blazer over the Metallica shirt he had chosen for his relaxing night in. He picked up his shoe, hopped as he forced his foot into it and then repeated the act for the next one. "I won't be long, I promise."
He grabbed his wallet and keys, then rushed out the door.
The quiet and calm that fell over the loft was short lived when, just seconds later, Castle burst through the door again.
He made a beeline for the kitchen, for Kate. He cupped her face, pulled her in for brief but affectionate kiss.
"Seriously, please stay," he pleaded quietly.
He waited until she nodded before rushing off... again.
Beckett remained still, staring at the closed door as her heart pounded in her chest. She dared to glance in her friends' direction but regretted it the moment she saw four sets of eyes staring back, four poorly-hidden smirks.
She sighed, shrugged in defeat. "Go on, then."
Their teasing aww's filled the room, brought a tinge of pink to her cheeks.
"That was adorable," Lanie added, a hint of pride in her tone.
Kate shook her head, made her way back to the table and collected the scattered cards. "I'll deal."
