Let’s not forget WHY Tom was happy to finally leave the show. Because after all his hard work and training and excitement and enthusiasm THEY MISTREATED HIS CHARACTER FOR YEARS UNTIL HE BASICALLY FELT STUCK AND BORED AND IT FELT FREEING TO BE ABLE TO GET OTHER JOBS WITH BETTER OPPORTUNITIES THAT TWD DENIED HIM EVEN THO HIS CHARACTER IS THE MOST BADASS AND ONE OF THE MOST HYPED AND LOVED CHARACTERS IN THE COMICS.
Remember when he excitedly told after season 6 how he trainer the scene in which Jesus punches Negan in the comics? They did choreography and changed it around since Jesus is the tallest motherfucker in the comics, but on the show, not so much. They trained how to make Jesus punch differently taking in the different circumstances.
Remember how he was excited to show how hard he trained after season 6 so he can do all of his stunts and martial art scenes himself without a double? And then none of those scenes ever took place.
Yea, they added the Morgan fight which I personally didn’t think was enough compensation, and then he was allowed to fight again AND THEN HE DIES ALL OF A SUDDEN in the scene. Was it cool? For 3 seconds, yeah. Was it a compensation? Hell NAH. It was not nearly remotely closely enough.
Remember when he started showing his irritation during season 7 that his scenes got cut out? Remember the shift of tone in his enthusiasm? More towards “Uhm yea maybe Jesus can still punch Negan in season 8??”
Remember when AMC promoted Jesus fighting for season 8 finale and it got cut out ?
Remember how Tom has been hopeful that he will - one day - get his cool scenes after watching all the others get those and him being left as background decoration? Being sent off on a run half of season 8 out of nowhere in the background and never to be seen again until some people were like “omg on this pic I think that’s his hair!!!”
His hair and beard being the most talked topic on all his panels. Him being reduced to a love interest of either Daryl or Aaron instead of focusing about his character work and his possible scenes ?
Remember when Tom Payne snapped at a fan asking for Jaaron that Jesus is more than just a random love interest to a main character ? Which showed his frustration about how people only are interested in how he washes his damn hair or if he is gonna get a boyfriend.
Basically treating him the same sexist way usually female actors are treated.
Cause he is gay and has beautiful hair on the show.
So that’s all he’s got to offer.
Remember him stopping posting TWD related things on twitter or IG?
Cause I noticed and it made me sad.
And I’ve talked to him in London this year and he said he’s absolutely frustrated with what they’re doing with Jesus on the show, but he still hopes for the new showrunner to change that and maybe he’ll get more to do.
THAT HE IS FRUSTRATED BUT HOPEFUL FOR SEASON 9.
After all this, saying “oh well look he’s happy being killed” is the worst kind of excuse to give for him being killed.
I’m happy he’s not stuck anymore. But would he have preferred to get his scenes on the show rather than being killed?
P.s.: and also, how would YOU feel? Would you want to give AMC the satisfaction of seeing you sad and vulnerable after being treated like that? Nope. “Fuck them and fuck this” is more likely to be your reaction. Cause you have some self respect. Right ? And he has that. And I’m proud of him and his hard work 🙏
