A puzzling project
@arthur-tristan-kingsmen
Avo sat at their bench odds and ends, and partially completed bits scattered about. The Ace grumbled to themselves while looking over the blueprints they’d sketched out.
Things where... not going as smoothly as planed. They flicked the lens up, small hand-paw running through their short mane. Maybe another opinion would help.
But... no one here had anywhere close to their mechanical knowledge. Avo sighed, blunt claws drumming out a staccato beat on their table. The little Coin jerked upright as an idea hit them.
Maybe, Arthur would want to help?
Avo quickly, but carefully gathered up the project, wrapping it in the leather it had been laying on.placing it in their tool box.
Scooping up the box, Avo hopped into the shadows, moving quickly to the route they knew would lead to their blond friend.
A lone silver eye peered out through the shadows, “A̷rth͜u͜r͘, fe͢el ̶u̢p͜ t͝o̵ h̨e̵ĺp̛in̢g̡ me҉ ṕuz͝zl͡e th͝r̡oug̕h ̴a͢ pr͞o̶j̧e͘ćt ̵t̡hát͟ h̀a͠s̷ ̸m̕e̵ ̸stuck?”

There's the sound of screeching metal and mixed with angered chirps as Avo comes barreling out of the shadows, their singular eye zeroing in on the knife stuck through Arthur's had. Now the Minor Arcana's a ball of bristling metallic fur and fury. "Wḩo̶͝m҉.̷̨ ̴͘ ҉̨Wh̵o̧͝m̴̀ d̨͟i͠d̀ ̢͜͠ţ̛̛h͏̛i͠s̵ ̧͝͠t̡̛o͘͢ y̛͜o͏͢u?"
Arthur didn’t really seem to react, until he was spoken to by the small arcana. He turned dulled eyes on it and tilted his head. “Mm…..I don’t know.” He shrugged, looking at the knife in his hand, and then back at Avo. “Some fae, I guess.”
The only sounds that slip out of Avo is a cacophonous mix of metal striking metal, steam hisses, and a low animal rumble. It takes the spirit a moment to calm themselves.
That lone silver eye watches Arthur, the lack of emotions or pain reaction is… disconcerting. A small handpaw is held out to the blond, “ Let me͡ śe̡e̢ ͏ýoưr͜ h̕ánd͟ ͏Arth͠ur͜,̕ t̴h͟ę ̶o̴ne w҉it̸h ͘ţhe̵ ̢knif͝e th͝rou͏gh ͟i̧t.̨” The other paw already digging around through their pouch, pulling out rolls of gauze, jars of salves.
Avo also slipped out a strange pair of gears, “ I ͘ne̵ed to ̵stop ͞the ̵bl͏e͟e̛d̵i͢n̶g,͢ s̸e͞e i҉f̕ ͢I ̢ca͡n ͢g͠e͟t th̢e͘ ̀kn̨if͠è ̛safel҉y̕ o͠ut̀.͘” Short ears where pressed against their skull in worry. Why-what-? Take care of stab wound on friend first, questions later.
Arthur held out the bleeding hand without hesitation for the Ace to inspect. He watched as they took out all the items from their satchel because their hand moved back and forth and stole his attention.
When they stopped, some device he had no memory or recognition of ever seeing in their hand, Arthur listened, and then his eyes strayed to the blade still embedded in his hand.
“It’s fine.” He stated, “It doesn’t hurt. I can remove it for you.” Without waiting for an answer, Arthur’s grip found the handle of the switchblade, and he pulled, the knife making a slick shluking sound as it came free from his palm through the back of his hand. He dropped it to the nearest flat surface, near the ointments and gauze where they’d been set on the desk. “There.”
Avo screeches as they do their best impression of a metallic puff-ball when the blond pulls the knife from his hand. The Ace of Coins pulls the gears apart and lunges for the bloodied hand; letting the bits of metal hover above and below the wound, halting blood flow.
“DO̡N̡’T͡ D̸O ͜TH͜A̴T!” They do their best to glare at Arthur, short tail lashing behind them. “P̨uĺl̵i͏ng̛ out t̀h͠e͜ cauşȩ o͜f a ͢st̵a̷b͡ would͝ ͢will caus͠e it̢ ̀to ͠bl̷ee̵d̶ ̕fa̶ste̵r,͘ a͞ccel̕e̢r̛a͡ti̴ng ̧blo̸ơd͘ ͞loss͟.͢”
The little spirit pulls the hand closer with small paws, shaking their head sharply once, letting the lens fall down so they can better examine the damage.
Sharp steam hissing is his response to the damage. Blunt claws grabbing for gauze pads and an anti-septic to flush it with. “I̕ ͡wo̷uld̵ n҉o͡rm͝al͡l͢y̡ ̷war̡n͜ ţhi͠s͢ wo̧uld hùrt͝,͢ ͜but͡ I h͠a̡ve̛n͏’t ̴se̸en yo̡u r͠ea͝ct́ ͏to͢ ̸pai͝n҉ yet,͏ ̴so͠..̨.”
A bottle is tipped to let the contents wash over the wound, removing the excess blood, letting the true scope of the damage be seen. Avo hums unhappily. “ Thi͡s̛ i͞s͠.͝..̕ ̧w̛or̵se ͏t̕he͏n̕ I thoùght..͘.͢ ”
They blew out a sigh, before thumping a rear leg in worry. “Í t́h͢i̢nk ̕w͏é’re g͘o͡ing to͢ ͜n͢eed ̀t͜hé Qu͟ȩe͘n̴’͞s̵ ̵help̵.͞”
“A̷ ̢lit̕tl͠e̵ ĺat́e҉ ̸to̧ ca͞l̷l̸ fo҉r̢ my ̛ḩelp̀ A̢vo,͡” a rich, yet distorted feminine voice called out. “I’m͘ alr҉e̕ady ̴her͘e. ͞ ҉Your dis̨t̢re͏s̀s was̀ pal͜pab͡ĺe͜ ͞ás yo͡u ̀le͘ft̴.̀” A mother of pearl mask, coral horns, dusky fins, scales of royal blue and sea-foam on a form the size of a medium canine is what emerge from the shadows.
The new spirit moves with fluid grace, four pale blue eyes roam over the scene, zeroing in on the human’s damaged hand. A webbed, long ‘fingered’ hand-paw takes Arthur’s in her own, lightly turning it to better gauge the damage. “I app҉r̵o͜ve̷ t̢h́e úse͝ of ̴your͜ s͝tasìs devìce to ͘h͜alt͡ ͞t̴he͟ b͜ļeedįńg͜.́”
Avo sighs, “A͜r҉t͏h͠ur,͢ ͜meèt̨ ̶P̸i̸v͝íra, ͢o͘u̶r Q͝u͜e͞ęń of Cu͠ps ̵ànd̷ a͘ mos҉t ́ta̸le҉ǹt͘ed hȩaler.͘”

Reports have been coming in of sightings of large creature in the woods, in addition to pictures of mismatched tracks, unusual lights, and unearthly sounds. One person even managed to snap a picture of it, a bit blurry, but it shows a quadruped standing at least as tall as a person, and a mask? The Mystery Skulls have been asked to look into it. (nil-the-fool)
Going over the details of this new case, Lewis frowns. He’d usually be excited at the idea of checking something like this out, but he can’t help but feel nervous. Usually something like this would make him think man in costume, but the evidence is strange to say the least and he is not sure how it would be possible for someone to stage this.
Despite Lewis’s apprehension however, Vivi is running around the kitchen screeching about blue monsters and haunted masks and it is becoming clear that they don’t have a say in this matter because Vivi is already on board.
Running a hand through his hair, Lewis tries to offer Arthur a comforting smile, but he knows it fails when Arthur drops his head on to the table and groans. Oh well, Lewis supposes he will just have to keep an eye on Arthur and hope the other man doesn’t bolt.
“Well, it looks like we aren’t getting out of this one amigo. Come on guys, lets get our backs packed and head out!”
Despite Lewis’s words, it takes a couple of hours because Vivi is too excited to keep in place and Arthur’s reluctance makes the blonde pack slower than usual. Eventually they get it together though, and they finally make it to the woods.
“Well gang, looks like we are here! Perhaps if we are lucky we will be able to wrap this up in no time and I can get dinner started. Who knows, maybe we will get to reenact that scene from Scooby Doo where the monster chases them and that cool hippie music plays! You know, the one with all the la’s?”
And now both Arthur and Vivi are giving him a look and it is clear they don’t find him cute. Which is silly, because Lewis is the cutest thank you very much.
Huffing in response, Lewis decides to just get the show on the road and begins to make his way down the long path. Oh well, maybe the monster will appreciate Lewis’s humor.
lewis-manchild-pepper:
“Bag of holding huh? How interesting…”
Now curious about the bag despite his embarrassment, Arthur blinks. He then seems to turn and stare at the bag, fidgeting as his mind begins to get away from him. He is curious about it, and it seems his brain is already trying to figure out how such an item could work.
“Yes really! I think it would be wonderful to get together again!”
Now clapping her hands together excitedly, Vivi smiles. She seems to be excited at the prospect of another get together, and Lewis can only chuckle at her. He knows that once the woman has made up her mind, it is as good as written in stone!
“Ohhh, but yes! We certainly need to find a way to communicate! I’d hate for us not to be able to hear from you all again! Maybe there is some way to send messages between? Notes of a sort? Hmm…”
Already on the case, Vivi raises a hand to her chin. She grips it with her index and thumb, before furrowing her brow in concentration as the boys watch Mystery creep closer to the spirit as his own tail begins to wag
Nil smirked, there was nothing else you could call that expression. She reached over and tapped the basket. “What it entails is using magic to link the inside of a space, such as basket, to a isolated pocket of space, thus making it large on the inside.”
Leaning back, the Fool drums her fingers against her thigh, “As for a way to keep in contact, I do have something.” Nil twisted herself slightly, digging around through a pouch on her hip, pulling out three small, ornate mirrors; holding them out to the human members of the Mystery Skulls.
“These are what I have for now, think of them as the magical equivalent of a phone, for lack of a better term.” She rolled her shoulders in a shrugs. “I’m afraid this is the best I can do until I resolve the issue of getting service to a pocket dimension.”
Biri rolled over, pawing at Mystery’s muzzle., little wands clinking against the bangle on her foreleg. The small Four of Wands trilled and chirped as she wiggled happily,
Staring at Nil, Arthur visibly gulps. While his curiosity is still strong, he turns to stare at the basket with caution. Part of him wants to reach out and test the basket himself, but a louder and more nervous part of him demands he play it safe.
“So like… if someone were to reach in to the basket, their arm would end up in oblivion? That sounds like it could be dangerous. What if someone fell in?”
And now Arthur is squinting at the basket, biting his lip in nervousness as Lewis chuckles in the distance. What an odd question!
He’d be lying if he said he wasn’t curious himself though.
“Ohhh, these are so cute! So, with these mirrors we will be able to set up meetings? Heh, be prepared Nil, I’m going to have Lewis cook you a five star meal one day!”
And now Vivi is smiling as she takes her mirror gently. She is running her fingers along the rims, grinning in interest as the boys reach out to take their own mirrors as well.
“These are really nice mirrors Nil. This will be better than a phone anyway. We all tend to have our phones on silent most of the time for work, so this will be better.”
And now Lewis is nodding happily, brushing his fingers over the cool glass as he tries to figure out how it works. To his left, however, Mystery is busy pretending to huff at the paw. He then lets out a mischievous bark before slowly walking around to Biri’s side and flopping down upon them, albeit gently.
The Fool spirit chuckles warmly. “No, their arm would not wind-up in oblivion, It would wind up in the pocket of space.” Nil held up her hands cupping them, a bubble of energy appearing within. “Think of it like this. The bubble is the pocket of extra space. You reach into the basket, and it goes into the bubble making the extra space, rather then the basket’s normal space.”
A tinkling tone pairs with her chuckle, the energy bubble popping as she lets her hands fall into her lap. Smile stretched across her face. “I look foreword to it.” Her chuckle turns more teasing. “Though, be warned the Minor Arcana will likely invade. They are hard pressed to pass up good food.”
“I’m glad you like the mirrors, Eldii will be thrilled, they where one of their projects.” Her expressing turns serious, colors flickering vivid blue. “Please, if you ever run into something that makes you feel like you’re in over your head, call me.”
Nil turns her head away for a moment, sorrow crossing her face briefly, “I’ve been forced to stand by too many times, if I can help, I’d like to.” She turn back to them, her smile seeming just a little more brittle then before.
Biri lets out a surprised chime as Mystery lands on top of her. The small spirit presses her mask into the canid’s side, hand-like paws coming up to tickle his sides. Biri’s own mischievous trill sounding as she ‘attacked’.
