The Ranger's Apprentice Memorial Fanwork Fest

Well, Rangers, we got some sad news the other day, and it's affected all of us. Whether you came to the series recently or long ago, Ranger's Apprentice left a profound impact on all of us, and drove many of us to create - art, writing, short form videos, memes, and so much more. In honour of that, I'll be hosting a fanwork fest on AO3.

There is no theme to this collection. Whatever speaks to you right now is okay to write. Write fluff if you need something uplifting; write angst if you need something cathartic; expand on a canon scene, or write something with entirely original characters. Illustrate a scene from canon, draw a short comic, anything. If it help you, it fits.

Post your works here when you're ready. You can submit more than one thing, if you have more ideas. Works will be revealed May 22nd, 2026, but you're welcome to post after that date as well.

Feel free to reach out with any questions - and do remember that this isn't the end of the fandom. As long as we still enjoy the books, the fandom will never die

Apparently, on February 7th, John Flanagan passed away. The news was released only a few hours ago today. Rest in peace, John Flanagan, knowing that your creation will live a thriving life long after you. I hope the best will come of your children and your wife.

As sad as this news is, I'm charmed by this line in the press release:

He started as an advertising copywriter at J Walter Thompson in the mid ‘60s where, via many opportunistic trips to the watercooler by her desk, he met his wife, Leonie.

The final lines are quite touching, though:

Flanagan died peacefully from complications of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and his last days were spent with his wife and children by his side. His final words to his wife were typically understated but poignant, some might say, straight out of the Halt playbook: “It’s really good to see you.”

Okay so I was rereading TEY for a fic I’m writing and I found something weird?? I’m definitely way way way late in realizing this, but I can’t find any other posts explaining it

In book 8, Halt says that he left Hibernia 1.5 years after Ferris first tried to kill him (at 16), which means he’s 18 ish when he comes to Araluen.

In Tournament at Gorlan, it’s established that Pritchard fled Araluen “a year or two” after Crowley graduated.

A typical apprenticeship starts at age 15 according to EY2 and lasts for 5 years according to the main series, so Crowley would have graduated at 20 and therefore would have been about 21 when Pritchard left.

In Battle of Hackham Heath, Farrel says that Halt’s apprenticeship lasted 4 years.

If we assume that Pritchard starts training Halt right after he arrives in Hibernia and stops when Ferris forces him to run away, then Crowley’s 21 at the beginning of Halt’s apprenticeship and 25 at the end (which is when they meet in The Hibernian).

One year has passed between Tournament at Gorlan and Battle of Hackham Heath, making Halt 19 and Crowley 26 during BOHH.

In BOHH, Gilan is explicitly stated to be 12. In the main series, he says that he started his apprenticeship at 14 (when Halt was ~22), meaning he graduated at 19 (when Halt was ~27).

In The Burning Bridge, Pauline says that there were “five or six years” between Gilan’s graduation and the start of Will’s apprenticeship, which would make Halt about 33 during Ruins of Gorlan.

In Death of a Hero, when Halt is 19, Will is a baby. This means that fifteen years later, at the start of Will’s apprenticeship, Halt is 34—which is consistent with Pauline’s statement.

Therefore, during Ruins of Gorlan:

Halt is 34

Crowley is 41

Gilan is 26

so, based on my questionable math skills,

the age difference between Halt and Crowley is the same as that between Halt and Gilan (7 years)

which just feels really wrong for some reason

Am I missing something?? Is this just the timeline being screwed up again?

y’all it’s just all colossally fucked like gilan is supposed to just be a couple of years older than will (and flanagan eventually shoves him and jenny together) but literally he’s also 12 when will is basically a newborn, one years old at most, which already has like over a decade in age difference. when will starts his apprenticeship gilan is one of the youngest/newest full rangers and shit. it’s all broken. that’s just the piece I remember. we should consult qmark KSJDHJDJDKD /hj

There is more to it!

How can Gilan be one of the youngest rangers when he not only graduated 5-6 years ago and the rangers should realistically have a few graduates each year? But there is also the whole plot point of them rebuilding the rangers corps after what Morgarath did to it. That means they should have tried to train as many apprentices as possible. Which should mean that the corp is filled of relatively young rangers

I suppose it's possible that the whole "rebuilding the Ranger Corps" thing meant that they were recruiting older or adult apprentices from, say, woodsmen and hunters and whatever because they wouldn't take so long to train and could be filling positions early, and Gilan happened to be one of the few teenage apprentices who were taken on during that time?

Mind you, this is also where the two diverging headcanons of "Gilan lied about his age in BoHH and was actually a particularly mature-looking eight-year-old" and Changeling Gilan come from, so it's never going to be satisfactorily explained.

This post is 4 years old, but I’ve never stopped thinking about it!! I’m glad it’s getting attention again because the timeline in this series never fails to amaze me. I really like this idea that the Corps was accepting older apprentices during that era, especially because the mentions of Gilan being young relative to other Rangers would make more sense then.

but in all seriousness, as cheesy as it sounds, this series is probably one of the best things that could’ve happened to me. It was my first concrete fandom that I joined! My first ocs were for this series! My closest and oldest friends were made because of this fandom (shoutout @nineteen-rats)! It really formed me into the person I am today and it definitely shows in my work lol.

Although I’m not into Aph anymore, she still holds that special place in my heart <3

So thank you Minecraft Diaries, you’re such a wonderful if not strange series…

This is actually the most accurate scale of my art style changing over the years… I unfortunately either misplaced or straight up didn’t make one in 2015 (which would make sense because a lot of my “redraws” started in 2016) but still the fact that this particular fanart has been attempted so many times.. unbelievable

It just blows me away that this series pushed little 11 year old me to draw so much that I’m a junior in art college now, still drawing this fanart!
