I think that the resurgence of love for Hades is reflective of how much Hades loves humanity. Even after his image was slandered by christian society, getting reduced to “the greek equivalent of Satan”, and being made into the villain of countless pieces of media- people still love and talk about Hades.

And as they should! He is Nekrôn Sôtêr (the savior of the dead). He accepts everyone into his realm indiscriminately and gives them a home to spend the rest of eternity in. He rules by love, not fear. He keeps all of the monsters and cruel beings locked in Tartarus where they can’t hurt us. He gave his wife equal power and authority to him. He is the god of all the beauty in the earth, from the fertile soil with nourished the seed-grain to the mined wealth of gold, silver and crystals.

I finished If We Were Villains and I cannot stop thinking about it. I'm desperate to reread every Shakespeare play and then reread the book with renewed context but its too raw right now. What I will say is that I am a little bit in love with Oliver Marks. His sacrifice is possibly the most romantic (and destructive) thing I've ever read.

The relationship between he and James is so special because it simply cannot be limited to a single thing: it transcends romantic, friendship and fraternal. Oliver can never pinpoint exactly what James means to him, and he says as much himself. What cannot be denied is that they know each other and see each other in a way no one else can. It is tragically ironic that the book begins with Alexander confidently predicting the exact roles each of them will be assigned for the coming semester when, by the end of the story, they've all completely subverted what they'd come to expect from each other.

These are seven people who are entirely useless at talking about their own feelings as themselves. They use Shakespeare to express their emotions when their own words fail them. Whether this be James trying to confess to Oliver about Richard, or Oliver trying to describe what role he sees himself as inhabiting in James' life: it's all done through Shakespeare. In fact the one and ONLY time they act on their feelings (yes, THAT kiss) is at the end of a performance. And just to hammer this home, James' note to Oliver is done through Pericles because he knows only Oliver will be able to see the reality behind the monologue.

For contrast, Oliver and Meredith do not communicate through Shakespeare nearly as often: they rely on sex to and convince and reassure each other of their feelings, which is why the relationship always feels wrong when they try to talk: they're both pretending not to see the very real reason it will never work - James. If proof of this is needed, when Oliver was released, James was the first person he wanted to see. He only went to Meredith when he thought he would never see James again. I am convinced that as soon as he finished reading those articles, he left for the beach in Del Norte. At least, that's what I'm telling myself so that I'm able to sleep.

This book will stay with me forever.
