Going on leave and taking a break from a his harsh duties was this young soldier who, up to then, had been engaged in having fun at his library's Halloween party in Neptune Township on Snapshot Day.
Rapunzel really didn't wanted to stay in her tower and not have her picture taken while at the Neptune Township Public Library's Halloween party - until she realized we would use the ssstttrreeetttccchhh feature of my iPad's PhotoBooth app.
This young policeman preferred having his picture taken using the Mirror function of my iPad's PhotoBooth app. The Neptune Public Library is lucky to have such eager boys in blue with whistles patrolling the area during its Halloween party. It was wonderful to be with the kids and showing them how to use the app while taking pictures of them. They didn't mind a TEENY break from the games, crafts and snacks that their Library offered to them that day!
One of the Neptune Public Library's mascots - the evil Joker - attended the Library's Halloween party. The Joker was quite familiar with my iPad's PhotoBooth app and wanted to use its Squeeze feature to take his own picture.
Every library should follow the Neptune Township Library's practice of having their own fire prevention personnel...who take their responsibilities extremely seriously (even while wearing big rings made during the Library's Halloween party)

What serendipity! I just love book sales and the Friends of the Neptune Township Public Library (those beaming ladies in the background holding up their library's bags - also for sale!) just happened to be having one on the day of my visit...
The Neptune Township's Mission Statement says it all for me - the opportunities are infinite.
#Njsd12 Like the vast majority of public libraries throughtout the country, the Long Branch Free Public Library offers many services for its diverse clientele. People can learn and/or practice English and the library offers a substantial selection of Spanish and Portuguese materials. Literacy and Diversity Coordinator, Tonya Badillo, created and leads programs for ex-offenders re-entering the community to help them find employment. Ms. Badillo has shared her programs widely with other librarians throughout NJ. Janet Birckhead, Reference and Local History Librarian, shared plans for creating a much-needed teen space in the near future, as teen presence in their library has grown so much over the last couple of years (a good thing!). She also showed me their new quiet study room, designed for folks looking for a place to read and/or work in a space without noise - another example showing how public libraries are changing!
#njsd12 During the evening of NJ Snapshot Day I visited the Long Branch Free Public Library. Fred Pachman, Director of the the Monmouth Medical Center's Altschul Medical Library, was there to present a program illustrating the Center's 125 years of history. This video clip portrays audience members mesmerized by one of the two historical films featuring the Center shown that night. Afterwards I enjoyed meeting both Fred and Randy Gabrielan, Executive Director of the Monmouth County Historical Commission and author of many books about the histories of NJ towns and cities. Both were highly enthusiastic about the LBPL and its Director, Ingrid Buck. At the same time patrons crowded around a display of photos from the Altschul's archives. Many recognized scenes from the past. Director Buck shared that programs about Long Branch history were extremely popular in her community. As library staff are well aware, many community members come to the library (and its website) first when looking for local historical information. As an added bonus, guests went home with souvenir postcards depicting scenes from the early 1900's - 1960's commerorating the Center's 125th anniversary in 2012.
Students from the Red Bank Regional Academy of Performing and Visual Arts were getting ready for a concert of chamber music, conducted by Mr. Jeffrey Boga. Mr. Boga told me that the students were thrilled to be performing in the Red Bank Public Library’s Eisner Room with it’s old parquet wooden floors, lustrous wood paneling and gorgeous ceiling - where the sounds produced are much better than when they perform in most locales, which are carpeted. (Sorry about the jumpy video...where was my best boy grip?)
#Njsd12 I saw spiders at all of my stops yesterday. These beauties, located in the children’s room of the Red Bank library, were created by kids to resemble the sculpture shown in the photograph next to them. Children of ages 5 and up learn about famous artists and then make pieces of art while trying to emulate that those artists’ styles in the library’s wonderful Artsy Smartsy program. The artist highlighted during October was Louise Bourgeois, who sculpted many giant spiders on display now around the world. The one pictured here, named “Maman”, is now installed at the Qatar National Convention Centre in Doha.
“The Spider is an ode to my mother. She was my best friend. Like a spider, my mother was a weaver. My family was in the business of tapestry restoration, and my mother was in charge of the workshop. Like spiders, my mother was very clever. Spiders are friendly presences that eat mosquitoes. We know that mosquitoes spread diseases and are therefore unwanted. So, spiders are helpful and productive, just like my mother.” -Louise Bourgeois Other works of art made by the children and still on display included really creative pieces modeled on the works of Louis Comfort Tiffany and the “Heads” exhibition which featured more than 50 very large paintings by Romanian artist, Dumitru Gorzo. Those works were located throughout the town, including right outside the library. (Exhibition was sponsored by the NJ Museum of Contemporary Art and was on view 8/19/2 through 10/4/12. I was sorry to have missed it!). What a great program for the children! I’ll bet they’ll never forget what they learned about art and famous artists while at their library. Next month’s featured artist is Piet Mondrian.

#njsd12 Early evening arrival at the very busy Red Bank Public Library - Eisner Memorial. They are celebrating 75 years in this building which was originally a mansion built in 1856, but renovated in the early 1900’s by the Eisner family (who also owned a uniform factory in town - now the Galleria). Local history librarian, Elizabeth McDermott shared this and more about Red Bank’s history and the library’s local history resources during my visit.
