Me and my Fine-Free Subcommittee team from the #NewJerseyLibraryAssociation’s Diversity & Outreach Section published a Fine-Free toolkit for libraries to consider making the move. I had a great time participating and collaborating with my subcommittee members on this very important issue. Some highlights: • All libraries that have been fine-free for some time have described the experience as positive. • Impacts to budgets are typically small to nonexistent. • 20% of libraries have seen an increase in circulation. • 38.1% of libraries have seen an increase in library card membership. #njsd12 During the evening of NJ Snapshot Day I visited the Long Branch Free Public Library. Fred Pachman, Director of the the Monmouth Medical Center's Altschul Medical Library, was there to present a program illustrating the Center's 125 years of history. This video clip portrays audience members mesmerized by one of the two historical films featuring the Center shown that night. Afterwards I enjoyed meeting both Fred and Randy Gabrielan, Executive Director of the Monmouth County Historical Commission and author of many books about the histories of NJ towns and cities. Both were highly enthusiastic about the LBPL and its Director, Ingrid Buck. At the same time patrons crowded around a display of photos from the Altschul's archives. Many recognized scenes from the past. Director Buck shared that programs about Long Branch history were extremely popular in her community. As library staff are well aware, many community members come to the library (and its website) first when looking for local historical information. As an added bonus, guests went home with souvenir postcards depicting scenes from the early 1900's - 1960's commerorating the Center's 125th anniversary in 2012.
