This is so stupid. Don’t spread your ignorance, maybe? Many cultures around the world, for example, Middle Eastern, northern Africa, south of Europe, and where I’m from-Latin America-do customarily pierce babies and small children’s ears for many different reasons, particular to those distinctive cultures and customs.

As far as I know, Anglos, especially of a higher social strata–find piercings and any other body modifications to be damaging not only on a physical level, but like even in a spiritual/religious one… Back in the 1940s/50s here in the U.S. Having a body modification as simple as having your ears pierced, was considered by many WASP to be unclean, and even devaluing, therefore jewelry adapted to this by making clip on earrings widely available. If you compare that era to the current one, you can most certainly tell that a lot has changed–we can even go to pretty much any mall and get our ears pierced. You’ll find a huge variety of earrings for pierced ears, and clip-ons are barely even a avail anymore.

Which means that people, trends, and customs change over time–however, being obtuse-minded, and most of all, having racist attitudes deeply entrenched in your psyche, will most certainly yield racially-coded ignorance, and many ppl will never outgrow that.

Noah fence Josie, but ear piercings not really that deep either, I kinda argue its better to get a kid’s ears pierced as a baby/small child because it took 3 tries from the age of 7 for me to finally get my ear to heal right, the final time was high school. The first two times my mom kept fucking it up and it hurt to clean and shit because she removed the earring. It doesn’t hurt past like a few seconds and at least a little kid you don’t remember feeling the pain of your parents trying to fiddle with it. Bonus, having pierced ears is gender neutral.

I’m screaming because a) it’s not that deep and b) it’s getting an unnecessary bodily modification on a child for solely cosmetic purposes and c) waaaaaay too often people get their child’s ear pierced with a gun as opposed to with a needle like it’s supposed to be.

Also yeah the recommendation for piercing a child is when they’re a newborn because they can’t mess with their ears because motor functions but like, the whole “they can’t remember it” argument is just a little too close to the circumcision argument for me to feel comfortable with it.

Like, sorry, but I draw the line for cultural relativism when it comes to harming the bodies of those who can’t consent, and even if it’s as /relatively/ harmless as an ear piercing, I’m still not supporting it.

As Hurricane Fran blasted North Carolina’s coast in 1996, one man braved the flood waters to save a small, yet magnificent snail from washing away. 

Andy Wood rushed out into the storm to collect as many Magnificent Ramshorn Snail (Planorbella magnifica) from the refuge he had built in his backyard—the last place on earth the rare snail was known to exist at the time. 

Wood made it back indoors with 25 snails and dumped them into his son’s bedroom aquarium.  Only 12 survived the event, leaving a handful of specimens to rebuild the species’ last population…
