I Didn't Unfriend You Over 'Politics'

This is about humanity.

At the end of the day, I cannot and will not be friends with people who think that we should be directing resources toward conversion therapy, for people “suffering” from homosexuality (like Pence). I will not be friends with people who think that it is okay to subject black people to practices that were deemed unconstitutional, because they deprived them of the very civil liberties our Constitution was intended to protect (like Trump). I will not be friends with people who think that those who subscribe to Islam are any less deserving of love, respect, or refuge than their Christian counterparts. I will not be friends with people who think that it is morally sound to indiscriminately murder the children of terrorists. Nor will I be friends with people who speak ill of immigrants, when without immigrants, none of us would even be here

Something happened in the past two decades that has grown from the small nightclubs of two or three cities to an international artform practiced at open mics, charitable events, in schools and in competitions in exponential numbers: poetry slams. This isn’t your grandma’s poetry but live, orated, dramatic, funny and emotional performances of a poignantly lyrical form appreciated by writers, young adults, youth, mature adults and just the night-lifer looking for something exciting.

Hyperbole is the platform for an art form that has exploded in the past decades. Hyperbole Magazine is a clean, rich, interactive tablet magazine and accompanying website for slam and performance poetry. Hyperbole curates videos, media, articles and events about the vibrant digital culture of poetry slams, their performers, spokenword venues and the cities across the country embracing this dynamic cross of poetry and in-our-face performance.

Our tablet publication is a monthly digital playground of videos and articles for readers who already consume media in a visual and interactive format. Hyperbole marries an interactive art to an already digital audiences and gives a platform to artists to reach that audience.

From spotlights of university poetry programs, inner-city writing programs teaching poetry to teens, hot-button debates on race, rants and styles to beautiful behind-the-scenes exposés on what it takes to put together some of the world’s largest and busiest poetry slam events.

Moving poetically between the present and the past, through both vernacular and professional photographers, director Thomas Allen Harris calls attention to images long forgotten and sometimes hidden from sight. The film highlights Carrie Mae Weems, Lorna Simpson, Hank Willis Thomas, Coco Fusco and Clarissa Sligh in addition to LGBT artists of color, such as Lyle Ashton Harris, Glenn Ligon, and Carla Williams.

The Faith Hope Community Center is a boxing gym on the near Southside of Syracuse, New York that has committed themselves to train young people for competitive boxing rather than for fighting or engaging in at-risk behavior in a census tract where the rates for violence, high-school drop out and low-income families are alarming high. This gym is run by Eddie Beauford and Bobby Harrison and this story follows Henniger High School Junior Shamar Lutchman.
