Alright so, it’s time to discuss this because I know someone is gonna fuck up, and I want to get it out now.
Holland is an LGBT male idol in K-Pop who is presenting himself publically. He is a young man who probably has not served yet in the military.
So, yes this means all those conversations about male idols (I chose male idols most particularly because of the whole “draft” situation and him being male but it applies to females too) possibly being LGBT and being able to come out were not useless. All of those times people said “this is a healthy conversation that needs to be had” were not just talking out their ass because here we have a man who has bravely decided to make this move. So, when a fan suspects an idol of possibly being LGBT, I am going to need the heteronormative belief that idols and LGBT cannot be discussed to stop. If someone thinks that their idol might be LGBT, they are not wrong in discussing this in a respectful manner.
I don’t want people supporting Holland just because their idol might be LGBT. I don’t want people support Holland just because he is LGBT. Holland is an example of an LGBT idol but he is first and foremost, an human being and artist and NOT A TOOL. So, when discussing LGBT in K-Pop, and him, treat him as a human and not just a symbol. His life and art is his own and not a bullet on your list. On his videos, and pages, conversations should be about him and his reach and maybe what this means for others but the focus is him. Maybe in other conversations it can drift, but on HIS ART and HIS SOCIAL MEDIA, you are to show love and support for him and talk about him and if he brings up something, you talk about it.
But from what I see, most of the support coming in has been completely loving and without problems. I am very proud! We need to support him because this is a hard thing to overcome. Conservative media will attempt to bash and silence him, but we need to both talk about him and support him. This will show Korean citizens and Korean idols that the world is a changing place, and hate won’t be tolerated. Show him that he and many others that LGBT AND KPOP can be one openly and still find success!
