"I can't believe humans would hunt the thylacine to extinction, humans are fundamentally evil" Hey, did you know that extinction was long thought to be impossible, and within 50 years of humans realizing that extinction via overhunting was a possibility it practically stopped happening? Did you know that humans are so desperate to prevent more losses that they're funneling millions of collective hours and billions of euros into helping other species? Hours and euros that could be spent on humans, and species on whom humanity's own survival does not depend? Did you know that due to an accidental introduction of rats, the Lord Howe Island stick insect population was brought down to 24 individuals and now there are tens of thousands of them?
This bug. This bug that, to most humans, is utterly useless, relatively gross, and completely foreign. Humans saved it because humans do not want to cause another extinction ever again if they can avoid it.
@crabussy
as someone in the field of ecological conservation, I can promise without a shadow of a doubt that people DO care. SO MANY people care.
I have to race to sign up to volunteer trips because even with dozens of spots available, people rush to devote their unpaid free time to helping the environment. these trips often fill up within hours. people care.
you will see a lot of bad news because that is the kind of news that people pay the most attention to. I know this more than you'd think from my optimism- not only do I live somewhere facing some of the most extreme ecological issues on the planet, I also spend my time studying the Bad Stuff every single day.
to see all of this firsthand and stay hopeful is proof enough that there IS hope. I promise there is good news, brilliant news, all the time. it's just less visible. but it's no less important or impactful.
it's gonna be okay (/threat)
There is a beautiful meaning in the fact he's realising the person whom he can't see isn't pointing a gun at him, but kindness. He's finally realised it's the case, all without having to turn around
as a smoker one of the fastest way i dissuade people from smoking is i go you know how your headaches suck. imagine a permanent headache that slowly gets more and more expensive to cure and also you cant stop coughing in the middle of all of this. yeah? this sucks.
i have said this before but end stage liver failure did not dissuade me from starting opiates. what dissuaded me was someone telling me "do you want to be itchy for the rest of your life? this is how you be itchy for the rest of your life."
people in the tags keep bringing things that are terminal, and i need you to understand some thing critical here. people do not conceptualise what they've not experienced properly and the 'inconvenient' side-effects come faster, and are far more likely than the Big Scary Ones. "dont start cocaine because your liver will fail" -- means nothing to me, have never experienced liver failure, also it takes forever for me to get to that stage. "do you want to know what cocaine shits are" -- paying attention, do not alter my shits habits.
The opiod itching is. The. Worst. I'm talking scratching yourself bloody in your sleep itching. The nurses covered my hands with socks when I slept and I still scratched. The itching doesn't stop when you stop the opiods, either. Neither does the sweating. You have to wear it out over time. It's hell. And the nausea/vomiting is no fun especially after surgery. *shudders*
A friend of mine had surgery and had to significantly increase her protein intake afterward. She said her doctor looked her in the eye and said, "I tell people if they don't eat enough protein after the surgery, they'll die, and they still don't eat enough protein. So I'll tell you this: if you do not eat enough protein, your hair will fall out." Reader, she ate plenty of protein. If you want people to listen to you--and I don't just mean for health advice--warn them of the immediate, inconvenient consequences of not listening.
hey shoutout to my fellow ppl who used to and/or continue to struggle with regularly fulfilling everyday hygeine tasks for literally any reason. You can make a lot of progress on that sort of thing that you may never talk about but that’s still hard-earned improvement and Im proud of you.
Youre not the only person who struggles w that and you don’t have to undercut your sense of personal improvement just because it’s the “bare minimum.”
Pick an evil minion to do your bidding
Hulking, growling Orc who's a cut-throat amoral lawyer
Mindless automaton that talks like a 1920s mobster, for funzies
Beautiful, doe-eyed princess that wants to put others in distress for once
Sir TotallyEvilFR, bears an odd resemble to the hero in a fake mustache
Box of infinite random goblins. A different one comes out each time
Half-Demon Warlock. Don't worry, it's the top half.
Evil mastermind who's taking "big stupid goon" as an elective
A very bad dog. The worst boy. An absolutely reprehensible lad.
The only cannon in the world that feels hate
Me. I've not got many skills but I do have lots of free time
I kid you not I thought the TotallyEvilFR joke was that you would have a sidekick identical to the hero, which could be very useful and funny
So I voted for him
Then I realised
No nuance. Best animal meat.
Beef
Pork (incl. boar)
Chicken
Turkey
Lamb/Mutton/Goat
Fish (finfish)
Shellfish
Venison (or similar ungulate; llama, buffalo, yak, bison, camel, elk, antelope)
Other poultry (duck, goose, quail, pheasant, ostrich, etc.)
Other (rabbit, insect, alligator, kangaroo, etc.)
Even if there is a kind you’ve never tried, base your judgement on previous experience.
Even if you don’t eat meat rn, base your judgement on previous experience.
If you’ve straight-up never eaten any meat just keep scrolling you don’t need to know the results.
Please reblog. I would love if this spread, especially, to non-Americans.
Unironically I think the early to mid 20s age group in America has unbelievably bad consent boundaries on all levels and so much language to defend it but this makes me sound like elon musk if I say it however the commonality of someone who will be like “I had 47 panic attacks and it’s your fault” if you tell them no is insane
I rejected someone and got called “the scariest person I’ve ever met” with so much therapy speak interspersed like alright okay alright okay alright okay
“You just say whatever you’re thinking and I don’t know how to handle it” was verbatim part of this conversation. Also everyone hates to see an autistic bitch
When I was in this age bracket, there was a huge emphasis on improving consent culture via graceful rejection, and it's gone by the wayside. Which sucks.
Twice in my youth (once in high school and once in college) I was in situations where I was asking someone out and I could tell they were calculating in their heads the risks of rejecting me, and both times I said, out loud, "you can say no, I wouldn't have asked if I wasn't prepared for either answer." And then they said no. This wasn't some spark of special wisdom I had - I knew to do it because feminist conversations among my age group brought it up regularly. This isn't happening nearly enough anymore.
More recently, I was really glad when we got to "rejection sensitive dysphoria" in my IOP program and it was one of those symptoms where the therapists really emphasized how it affects others. Because it does.
Being someone who cannot handle rejection makes you much more likely to violate boundaries, and yes, that includes sexual ones. Yes, you, reader who has never hurt a fly. If you don't want to stumble backwards into sexually assaulting someone, fix your RSD meltdowns. If you keep them up it's only a matter of time. Because if you're nice enough to interact with, but are known to have RSD meltdowns, guess what happens when your friends and acquaintances need to reject you?
when I tell you I had to do a double take because I thought these were 2 parts of the same whole joke
please be aware that disabled people are not "against exercising"
Some disabled people's symptoms worsen when exercising and they can't affort that while holding a job/studying/making an ssi application
some diasabled people cannot exercise unless in physical therapy, which they may not have acess to.
Some disabled people risk hurting themselves permanently by exercising
A lot of disabled people do exercise but abled people don't consider it exercise because it isn't normal enough.
Most disabled people have been told to "just exercise" or "try yoga". Most disabled people have been guilted into thinking it's their fault because they're not exercising or not enough. Most disabled people feel like shit when you bring up exercise because they'e learn it's followed up with either a lesson on how they can "cure their disability" or how they're "letting themselves go"
Some disabled people get trauma response by people telling them to exercise, or that execise is good for them even if that is true.
When someone tells me exercise is good for me i have to stop myself from sobbing on the spot. Because my dad and doctors told me i should just exercise no matter how many specialist's letters i have saying i risked permanent damage. Because my physical therapy is right there, i just can't acess it. Because all the ressources are a subway away and i'm being denied them. i'm being told to way for a year and a half while i watch my mobility and pain worsen, knowing it could be getting better. Because it reminds me how abandoned i am from people who could save me.
Because telling disabled people "exercise is good for you" or "have you tried exercising" is an insult to how much they want and are trying to get better. This is getting in the "i know better" position and getting mad when you do not know better.
shoutout to me sobbing in my GP's office because I'm not able to exercise the way I used to and have to spend days in bed because of the pain and her responding with "well you can't just stay in bed the rest of your life"

the moment I heard elphaba's delivery of "there's a girl i know..." in i'm not that girl i knew i had to draw this comic, i strongly recommend listening to it while you read for the full experience!
this comic is a companion to this piece (which was inspired by glinda's delivery of the same line in the i'm not that girl reprise).
pages 1-4 are from elphie's pov, pages 5-8 are from glinda's.

I really feel that we should be less comfortable making "kill yourself" jokes to people.
I saw a video earlier where someone was reacting to the comments on a video they had created biting into a chocolate orange like an apple (as opposed to cracking it and eating the slices)
several of the comments were variations of "kill yourself" and there were probably more that weren't shown and just....
..... when did we get so comfortable with this?
and thankfully that video's creator found them funny but what about all the people who wouldn't find it funny? what about the people who would feel really hurt? why do people feel so comfortable telling strangers to kill themselves "as a joke"?
Guys 2 days ago my mum sent me a recorded message BY ACCIDENT where she was shit talking me
And then she doubled down on what she said
Very sad but also very funny
(I cut contact right after)
I cut contact more precisely because she said I'm "a hypocrite because I can't even get up in the morning "
I am chronically ill, I can't get up often because of chronic pain, which I confided in her about. That's what hurt the most (even tho it's still pretty funny)
Anyone who has cut contact with parents, I am taking advice
