okay but where is my friendship group that is like les amis
I am once again, subjecting another unwilling loved one to my Newsies hyperfixation.
If you listen closely to Once and For All you can hear the fansies ugly sobbing into their pillows no I'm not even joking see for yourself
god the world will know is such a good song you’re lying if you say it’s not
So I just went and saw a community production of Newsies and wanted to jot some things down about it because !!!!! it was just so so good and incredible and ahhhh.
NEWSIES NOTES 🗞📰
ACT 1
POC CRUTCHIE !!!!!! B l e s s
Set- two towers with the three tiers
Jack- sounds like JJ, more like Joey
Specs is missing one shoe the entire first act and shakes his leg in the air when he says and I lost my shoe
Crutchie is the sassiest thing ever!!!
Davey very nervous at first, gets more confidence as seize the day approaches
Davey is super tactile with all the other newsies!!!
Jack is in all the dance numbers
Crutchie in almost all the dance numbers, jack helps him jump off of a table during the deli scene
Crutchie does the paper turn on his good leg at the end of seize the day !!!!!!!!
Finchs ‘spot colon gets me a little jittery’ did this little jig and omg it was adorable
Kath and Crutchie did a little fist bump after the I got a nickel comment
Kath very standoffish to jack until they’re in the deli - play shoves a few of the boys
TRANS ALBERT !!!!!!! *
When jack gets to his penthouse before Santa Fe he gasps ‘oh god Crutchie’ and puts his face in his hands
Davey literally pulls one of the scabs over to their side during seize the day and the other scab looks so confused but shrugs at Davey and goes over with them 😂
Les follows after all the newsies and hangs off of their shoulders- Race pulls les to dance with them during seize the day
RACES BACK FLIP ACROSS THE ENTIRE STAGE

Do you know where the general he in the fandom of race and/or spot being Italian came from? I haven’t been in the fandom that long but I’m interested in name etymology and Conlon and Higgins seem to be more of Irish origin so I’m curious.
I could never find where that was grounded either. As an Italian-American myself I was also perplexed by that because, you’re right, Conlon and Higgins are both rooted in Ireland. newsiesquare would be the blog to ask, they’re more knowledgable than I am.
Thanks for sending this question our way, Jessi! I absolutely adore talking about Ireland, since I lived there for a bit. Anon, you’re totally right! Conlon and Higgins are both of Irish origin, but I can get even more specific since you like etymology.
The name Conlon, for a variety of political and mythological reasons, is associated with the northeast of the (modern) Irish republic — you can tie Spot to medieval princes/chiefs near County Meath. Higgins comes from roughly the same area, but to the west near County Mayo. Race’s last name is an Anglicism for “of hUiginn” or “of the vikings,” so it’s actually English/Irish/Norse. Despite that, the (rewritten) 1992 movie script describes Race as “18, tall, skinny, [a] gambling Italian beanpole”, so his Italian presentation might stem from there.
More likely, it probably comes from some confusion over the historical Race’s legal name: if it was Ed, or Anthony, or the very Italian Antonio. There is a possibly apocryphal newspaper clipping floating around on some other newsies history blogs supporting the name Ed, but I haven’t been able to find the article itself. “Anthony” shows up in fandom as far back as 1999, seems to have become popular/”official” c. 2002, and probably isn’t historically accurate. “Antonio” happened later, showing up in fanfics in 2005, getting popular c. 2010, and writers/researchers have been confused about it since at least 2013.
My best guess is that an early fanfic author picked the name Anthony at random and it seemed official to new writers because it had been around for so long. Then it later became Italianized into Antonio because if this fandom loves anything, they love every character being a first gen immigrant. Also, Max Casella and some of Race’s Broadway actors have been Italian.
As for Spot, I’ve seen him presented maybe 50% of the time as Irish, usually with the first name Séan. When he is Italian, I think it comes from the fact that Tommy Bracco plays him in the Broadway film, and Tommy Bracco is the Peak™ Brooklyn Italian man.
If anyone with more of a pedigree in the Newsies fandom could point me to old forums or fanfic sites earlier than The Refuge I’d be super happy to do more research on where the Italian Racetrack trope originated!
ppl just be naming all the newsies…. like just knowing all their names…….. like “yeah that over there is jar jar binks. oh that? that’s peanut butter baby”
boys by lizzo except it’s newsies aka i couldn’t sleep until i made this video
Highlights of the 1991 Script
So there’s a scrapped script from the 1992 movie, called Hard Promises, from back when it was a drama instead of a Disney musical, that is so much darker and more complex than either the stage show or the 1992 movie. Lots of CW, it’s not happy.
“Jack Kelley, 17, tough-handsome, complicated man-boy”
“Racetrack, 18, tall, skinny, gambling Italian beanpole”
“David Jacobs, 15, with dark intense eyes. He’s a keen observer, a bit wary of the world.”
Esther is Polish! Wiesel’s name is actually Weasel! Oscar might be Otto?
New York City is apparently filled with hurdy-gurdy men
Jack scamming free pretzels. #bless
Nuns: Jesus loves you! Mush: W-who’s Jesus?
Jack Kelly, patron saint of not cutting in line and also, monkeybars
“Top a the mornin’ to ya, Pussycat!“ #letmedie
explicitly confirms Davey is Jewish, but through Weasel using slurs
Jack straight up steals the money he gave Weasel right back
Davey: Why do I need [Jack]? Crutchie: Why do you need air to breathe?
“'Cause I ain’t got a cute little brother to front for me.“ OW
Pulitzer: How do [Newsies] get so dirty? Advisor: They don’t bathe, sir.
Jack’s a flirty ho and explicitly “weaves a spell over David”
Jack carries Les around on his shoulders
“Jack reads a battered dime western novel.” VALID
…. Snyder’s first name is Nigel…
Jack is great friends with seven random blind people in an alley
Jack says he “stole some food to feed [his] kid brother. Truth.”

the number one best thing about the in the heights movie is that daphne rubin-vega is now being recognized for the queen she is
in other news I watched in the heights
this is from a chatlog I had with @navigatingrealities, which I will edit to bullet points. spoiler warning: in-depth discussion about changes made in the film that I did not enjoy.
the visuals were incredible and some of the things I was expecting to be emotional at I definitely was
they changed a lot more than I was expecting
abuela claudia made me cry the most
but paciencia y fe is my favorite song so I expected that lol
there were a few changes that I didn't like, to the point where I'm probably gonna be salty about it for awhile, but for the most part I think it was lovely
basically they did nina and benny dirty
nina's story was changed so that she experienced isolation and racism and it disheartened her so she dropped out, instead of not having enough money and having to work and that tanking her grades and her scholarship, which I honestly kind of changed her whole thing about expectations of doing well and making it out
i think that's a ymmv [so it's not necessarily a bad thing, but I personally disliked this change]
THEY MADE NINA'S DAD A WIDOWER
so camila is dead! and she doesn't have her song where she has one of the gut-punchest lines in the whole show, "for months you lied to us, what did we do to make you think we wouldn't do anything and everything for you?" and I'm ngl kind of upset that she's just dead
benny doesn't have his subplot of wanting to learn spanish to connect to the other drivers, and while there are still lines in 96000 that imply he looks up to nina's dad, his whole thing of idolizing him is kind of gone, and so is nina's dad not approving of their relationship, which I think strips him of a good deal of characterization and makes him feel less layered
their whole dynamic is kind of simplified and I don't like that
nina and benny also don't go home together at the end of blackout, so they don't have their first duet in the second act, which, a crime against romance
they do have their second duet about where their relationship might go when she goes back to school, and they have a nice physics-defying dance up the side of the building, so I somewhat forgive it
they also apparently are exes and broke up when nina went off to college and I'm okay with that, I like benny pining? lol
but! they didn't sleep together BUT carnaval del barrio keeps the "i heard you and nina went for a roll in the hay" line which goes from playful teasing to outright slander
also their fight before the blackout is removed entirely because usnavi and vanessa apparently needed more drama and I'm meh about that
because it doesn't really matter in the long run as the fight isn't even brought up later so it was just a bit of nastiness that I didn't enjoy
so tl;dr, benny and nina had a lot of stuff adapted out and I think it did a disservice to their characters and that made me sad
esp since nina was the character I connected to the most, and her family issues make me cry
also I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY KILLED HER MOM
also like, she called out her husband's like machismo tendencies and I liked that a lot as a commentary on his character and I really missed that in this film
also he doesn't even sing after his line in the first song
so no inutil, which.. another song that kills me
god
justice for benny and the rosarios
again though, the rest of it was really good and I enjoyed it, the choreography is breathtaking and will be incredible to experience at the cinema
oh also another thing that slightly disappointed me
so daniela and carla are a couple
but it's the kind of barely there thing that you can see if you look for it
but there's no lines acknowledging it
straight people will not realize that they are together, basically
and from the articles and whatnot I know that the movie people really want to be congratulated on their inclusion
but it's the same level as lefou in beauty and the beast
so like.. I've also seen some commentary about colorism
because washington heights is a very dominican neighborhood and that naturally means there should be a lot of afro-latino representation
but the cast is generally lighter skinned
speaking members of the cast, anyway
and I think with taking out benny and kevin's conflict, it feels like a double blow of colorism and erasure of anti-black/colorism commentary
which is a shame
but I definitely still loved it!
it's a fun and generally joyful watch
still though
#justice4bennyandtherosarios
she came to america with that feeling of isolation - the same isolation nina feels, like she had no community... but she BUILT the community and gave each and everyone of her honorary grandchildren as much oppurtunity as she could - ADOPTING THEIR SUENITOS - because SHE never had that... and she knows her time is up because seeing them all come together in that dire time of the blackout let her know she was ready to leave... it's abuela claudia appreciation hours 😭😭😭😭
In the Heights: opening number character intros
lmaoo of course he'd include hamilton easter eggs
usnavi is bisexual. vanessa is bisexual. benny is bisexual. nina is bisexual. carla is bisexual. piragua man is homosexual and in a relationship with mr softee man, who is also homosexual.
Things I Found Noteable in the ITH Movie (ft. spoilers)
I was lowkey expecting we'd be queerbaited but thank GOD we weren't
Dani and Carla just,,,, being domestic,,, Carla on Dani's lap at the pool,,, slow dancing in the apartment,,, good for them ❤️
The title cards with the temperatures
The pothole being a record?
The camera work! The colors!! The choreography!!! Everything is so electric!!!!
"Why is the fandom so obsessed with Sonny?" *watches the movie* "Oh..."
Vansnavi being the main couple instead of Benina actually worked really well! I was a bit sad we saw less of Nina, but Vanessa being developed as well as her relationship with Usnavi made up for it.
I'm so glad we know exactly why Vanessa wants to go downtown! Sis has a plan
Nina's hair getting more and more curly
Leslie Grace's take on Nina was very different than the ones I've seen before but I loved it!!!
lol the Hamilton reference
Piraguero JOMPED on that truck
also... lin isn't that bad of a singer. fucking chill
My heart kinda broke when Nina revealed she got searched
All of these moments of everyone just being a family,,, Claudia watching them and dying peacefully because she doesn't need to take care of them anymore, not when they all have each other
Paciencia y Fe as Claudia's journey to death
It's such a quick moment but Claudia being robbed in the middle of her solo 😤 sir pls give the lady her purse back
Also she looked so scared when they were yelling at her to clean up 😭
Sonny having a backstory, with his deadbeat dead and being undocumented
It also gives Nina more of a motive to go back to school
Benina dancing on the building gave me a mini heart attack
Vanessa and Usnavi being former classmates
The beach transitioning into the bodega!!
Vanessa and Unsavi and their daughter being the cutest family ever???
This was so fucking good I'm losing my mind
Ayyyyyy guess who just watched "In The Heights" and is currently sobbing over graffiti rags and a little girl wearing her papà's flat cap?
