here's another stage/fright highlight, with both the boys this time ☺️ again, major spoilers. again, taken from my own recording of the penultimate performance.
this is the last scene before the closing number, in which reece and steve are reunited in the afterlife. 🫠💘 transcript ⬇️
Reece: There he is. I got you a coffee. Just like old times, you lying on the floor, pretending to be dead. But now you are dead.
Steve: Toby?
Reece: No, it's not fucking Toby! It's me. What's all this about him being brilliant? He wasn't that good.
Steve: What's going on? Where am I?
Reece: Where do you think? You summoned Bloody Belle, didn't you? This is what happens. Still think it's all bollocks?
Steve: This can't be real!
Reece: I'm afraid it is. Lamp on the head for you. Trap door for me. It's like The Omen. When I fell through that hole in rehearsals and broke my neck, you should have called the whole thing off.
Steve: Well, we thought about it, but... the programmes had all been printed...
Reece: Just thought you would cash in, did you?
Steve: No! I did it 'cause I wanted to honour you! I've missed you!
Reece: Thank you. I missed you, too.
Steve: I can't believe the twist is that you were a ghost all along.
Reece: I know. It's pathetic. Finally ran out of ideas. It's just as well we're both dead.
Steve: This is ridiculous, I can't be dead! Maybe I've just had a bang on the head, and all this is a hallucination. 'Cause I was so desperate to see you again.
Reece: Yeah, maybe. Like you said: what is a ghost but a memory? Maybe every ghost story really is... just a love story. [this is the point where they hugged at the last show]
Steve: So, what do we do now? Do we just haunt the theatre?
Reece: Yeah, yeah, we can do. I mean, there's nothing to it. Couple of creepy corridors. Substage. I did it all in an afternoon. There'll be a new play on for us to watch, now that they'll have to cancel Stage/Fright.
Steve: Ah, you're joking, aren't you? This is a Phil McIntyre production. They're not gonna cancel the run just 'cause we're both dead.
Reece: Well, maybe they could get somebody in to do all your bits.
Steve: Like who?
Reece: ... Jason Manford.
Steve: I'm not sure I wanna be stuck in limbo watching Jason Manford do me every night.
Reece: Well, at least he's a name. Who have I got? Fucking little Toby. Either way, we've got unfinished business.
Steve: What d'you mean?
Reece: Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room.
Steve: What about Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room?
Reece: You cut the end, didn't you?
Steve: I had to. I couldn't have done that song without you. It wouldn't have been the same.
Reece: Well, we're both here now. That's the main thing. Off you go.
Steve: What d'you mean?
Reece: You've got a really quick change.
Steve: Ah, shit. [exits]
Reece: [effortfully lifting the fallen lamp] He must never find out... that... I was aiming for Toby.
