the walk back to derekâs room was one she was still getting used to, and the amount of tequila sloshing around in her stomach was not improving her navigational skills. taking a left where she shouldâve taken a right, she meadered down the hallway, reading off each door number as she passed, and frowned as it dawned on her that she only seemed to be heading further in the wrong direction. coming to a stop, derek sighed loudly and looked down at her key, refreshing her memory. it had to be on the opposite side of the hotel, given the numbers that were displayed on the doors around her. god, the last round of shots had been a mistake - but it wasnât unlike her to refuse a free drink, especially from an attractive woman. turning around, she stalked off in the direction sheâd come from, turning the corner quickly, only to nearly run right into another guest. âiâm so sorry, iâve gotten myself all turned around, and - â derekâs heart leapt into her throat as she looked up at the man standing before her and instantly recognized him. it had been three years since sheâd last seen or heard from noah ashford; heâd upped and left london to go to italy, or somewhere equally attractive. and while things between them had ended as amicably as they could have, given her friendship with his ex-girlfriend and the fact that theyâd slept together in the wake of the coupleâs break-up, derek had never anticipated crossing paths with him again. but if sheâd learned anything in her first few days at the hotel, it was that the place was full of surprises. ânoah? what are you doing here?â
Noah had dealt with a drinking problem in the past, back when his fiancée had left him, and as much as this trip was about letting loose for him, he had still decided to be more responsible with his drinking to not fall back into old habits. His rule was to never drink two nights in a row, not unless there was an event at the hotel of some kind. So that night had been a quiet one for him, he had spent the day at the pool, eaten dinner at a restaurant and then turned in early to read a book. By the time he finished it, it was dark out and he decided to head out for a brief evening walk before he went to bed, get some fresh air. It was rare for London to have evenings as warm as the evenings here in California so he enjoyed making use of them when he could, given that he could rarely sleep untl the early hours of the morning anyway.
Walking from his room down the hallway to get outside, he had thought he would be alone at this hour and so hadnât been careful to check for others. That turned out to be a mistake as he rounded a corner and crashed straight into another person. âShit, no, Iâm sorry, I wasnât looking where - â He cut himself off as he realized just who he had run into and surprise filled him. It seemed he kept running into people from his past these days and perhaps he shouldnât still be surprised, but he was. âDerek,â he breathed, taking in her appearance. She looked every bit as beautiful as she had three years ago when he had last seen her. âI - my agent sent me here. To get over my writerâs block. What are you doing here?â
