“Come back to the village?” Kakashi parroted, mocking. “But I haven’t finished yet.”
The poor man looked as though he was going to be ill all over the forest floor. If he was going to do that, he could at least do it elsewhere. Kakashi had no interest in seeing it, the weakness or the filth. That was all Gai ever was though. Weakness. It was pathetic, really.
It was as he said though. There was more left to take care of. Just one more. He did not fail to notice the rapid heartbeat echoing into his sandals, or the flickering of closed eyes. On of them was still very much alive. He’d only suffered a stab wound, after all. But not for long.
A kunai was the most basic shinobi weapon available. Every ninja who was worth their salt had one on them at all times. He’d better retrieve his. Kakashi knelt down next to the boy and plucked the weapon out like a flower. And how it bloomed! The sound ninja was no longer able to play possum when he erupted in a painful cry.
He twirled the kunai idly in his fingers. You know, maybe he didn’t need this weapon after all. Maybe he should just give it back.
“Pay close attention, Gai. You might learn something.”
And the weapon thrust down.
The edge of the kunai was stopped not even a centimetre above the flesh of the wounded man. Gai’s strong grip held Kakashi’s wrist back. His speed came from emotion; the way Kakashi looked down at him like he was nothing. Just like everyone else does. It was an expression that Gai absolutely loathed. Thick eyebrows came together as he gave Kakashi a stern look, already fed up with the mockery.
❝ That’s enough. ❞ It was time to prove himself, and if he had to fight someone who he once considered a best friend, then so be it. The real Kakashi was in there somewhere, he knew it. He just had to be. Gai would bring him out one way or another. His sharp eyes did not break contact with the other’s.
❝ Can’t you see that you’ve strayed too far on this dark path, Kakashi? You have turned into a criminal. This isn’t you. This is -- this is hatred. I once considered you to be my best friend, and I’m willing to do that again, but you have to make the first move. ❞ He prayed that his words would reach him, but it was probably unlikely in this situation.

As soon as Gai’s foot touched the sand, it disintegrated into a cloud of particles in the sky. Nothing could withstand that incredible power, not even all the hate in the world. But Gaara had already known that, though. Within the very first punch, he knew himself to be outmatched beyond his wildest dreams. Madness plagued him worse than ever, but still self-preservation stood firm within him. No part of him wanted to die here.
That was why he had given in.
“WAUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGH!”
He had not even needed to hand over the reigns. That very last jutsu had taken everything left in him and sent him into a darkness that was far too similar to death for him to fall gently. It was quick all the same. It was only, in the very last moment of consciousness, did true clarity come to him. What have I done…
The transformation was near instantaneous. All nearby buildings, and those unfortunate enough to be within them, were crushed under it’s massive size. Debris scattered into the air like shrapnel. And it laughed and laughed. Finally! It was free.
What.... is that? Gai gazes up at the gigantic monster, taken back by its size. He grits his teeth. This boy was a Jinchuriki?! It seemed like he was in too far deep now. But Gai would not give up, no. He is a man of courage and strength. While he doubted himself in the back of his mind, he had to remember what he was fighting for; and that was the people of this village. He had to protect them...
Reinforcements were quick to arrive, and Gai gave the signal to rescue those trapped in buildings, and evacuate the area. This was going to get messy. It would have been smart to wait for strong, capable backup, but Gai was too determined to end this before it begins.
Seventh Gate, Open.
The power surged through him, his body bulking up and his suit beginning to tear and shred in places that could not contain the new mass of muscle. Gai was ready to die in this battle, but only if it meant that he would take this monster down with him. In less than the blink of an eye, Gai leaps up by the racoon’s face and aims a powerful swing of his leg. He didn’t know just how effective this would be, if at all, but he was going to give it everything he’s got.

gai’s sudden shift in expression makes the small child shrink a bit more, wondering suddenly if he said something wrong. he knows that look, he knows that tone, realizing quickly grandpa is very much like dad when they mean to discuss something serious.
forget the gates?
“but–!” his mouth shuts. gai’s expression makes it very obvious he wasn’t finished speaking. he listens and waits. dad said grandpa was the smartest person around, he would be wise to listen.
words like d e s t r o y are hard for someone of his age to fully comprehend, but he understands better than most in his age bracket. not only from his own father having to apply salves and take medication to remain active every day, but for the man’s lap he sits on. destroy is long term. destroy is forever. lee told him the ultimate sacrifice gai made, told him he vowed the same promise to protect those he loves and cares for. he understands, to the best of his ability, that the renge was not a toy.
“ossu. dad told me very much about it. he shows me the…the toll it has taken on him. i know it is dangerous! and he told me that i am only to use the gates when there are many people in danger, to save the people i love the most. but…i…i want to be strong!” big eyes glance up at the man that is, in every sense of the word, his hero, “like you! and dad! i want to be able to protect you if i have to and i made a promise! just like you did.”
While he understood Metal’s viewpoint of this, and perhaps the way that Lee had explained it to him, he still did not approve of it. Not in the slightest. A heavy sigh came through his nostrils. He can’t blame Metal. And he most certainly can’t blame Lee entirely. It was himself that made the decision to pass on the technique to Lee in the first place. A mistake it was. If only he had’ve realised it a lot sooner, he never would have handed it down to Lee.
The grip on Metal’s shoulder loosened just a little. He was not upset with Metal, nor entirely Lee, he was mostly upset with himself.
❝ I want to make this clear, Metal. I don’t want to ever see you have to use that technique. ❞ It was time to pass down wisdom that neither he or Lee properly followed, and perhaps, maybe even Dai never followed either.
❝ The Gates only serve to heighten your strength when you are not strong enough. They are considered a shortcut that comes with dire consequences. A form of weakness, if you will. Metal, if ever comes a time that your friends or family are in danger, I want you to rely on your own strength, not the fake strength of the Gates. ❞
No, that wasn’t enough.
❝ Metal... I want you to promise me, that you will work hard and only rely on your strength without the Gates. If you can do that, Metal, you will be a finer shinobi than I, or your father ever was. Do you understand? ❞

Battered, bruised, tired, yet still managing to stand. The Hyuuga had taken stance in front of the enemy– In front of his once teacher. This was the worst possibly situation for anyone to be in, and they managed to find it. Pain racked through his body, both from the hit, and deep in his bones. He didn’t care. He wasn’t about to go down without a fight.
Especially if they were messing with someone as important to him as Gai. He wouldn’t allow it, he wasn’t about to let them through.
‘ Don’t– Touch him… ‘ He gasped for some air, byakugan activated as he took stance to activate the trigrams. ‘ Gai-sensei, you have to… Move… Now! ‘
Seeing his student get hurt this badly caused an eruption of fury. Neji had proved himself more than enough, but now it was his turn to protect his student. The Sixth Gate opened immediately, belaying the Hyūga’s command. There was a surging power that came from the awakening, a tremendous shockwave that rattled the ground. White eyes shifted to meet their enemy.
❝ Stand back, Neji. It’s MY turn now. Don’t you worry, I’ll handle this. Go find Tenten and get your wounds healed at once. ❞
He hardly meant it as a request. It was an official order. After all, what kind of mentor would he be, if he can’t even protect his students? While he did appreciate the protection Neji had provided, it caused him a great deal of stress.
urarenge:
lee has known this man practically his entire life. he has seen the best of times and the worst of them standing by his side. he may fail at certain social nuances but he is usually able to tell the sort of mood his sensei was in. they were both emotional creatures, an affliction he passed down to metal; it was hard to deny how they felt by how expressive those eyebrows could be.
he knows this isn’t something concerned a challenge with kakashi, but rather something more serious than that. he goes to make the man a plate of fresh pancakes, a few blueberries on top, before setting the plate and himself down at the kitchen table. he ushers for gai to come alongside.
“i am all ears, gai-sensei.” he sounds as professional as he can, but slowly his brows droop, “…is everything alright?”
Seeing Lee’s spirit fade away as quickly as it did had hurt him. It was his fault for ruining the mood of such a happy young man, it caused his chest to writhe and ache. But it had to be discussed, otherwise, the stress would never end, and the guilt would just continue to grow.
❝ I’m sorry to barge in on you like this, Lee. ❞ He bows his head, almost in shame of his actions, and proceeds to stare down at the plate of steaming hot pancakes in front of him. They looked absolutely divine. But the topic of the conversation to be had was causing his stomach to churn, eating away at his appetite.
His eyes lift at last and meet Lee’s directly. His voice growing a little louder, a little sterner.
❝ Why did you teach Metal that technique? ❞

Dripping fingers and the sound of something thick and wet slapped onto the grass below prefacing a loud THUD. Did Orochimaru think it wise to send spies his way? Did he think that he would'nt notice? Or had he been most foolish of all and meant for confrontation? That measly worm has gotten too big for his hole in the dirt. It seemed it was about time to pay him a little visit. Apparently that was long past due.
And what’s more…he had yet another visitor.
Kakashi flicked his arm, slopping the rest of the dripping blood off of him and turned on heel. He could continue this until Orochimaru’s ranks were barren and dry and still he would not break a sweat. When he saw who it was, however, it was apparent there was no need to deliver that murderous message.
“Oh, it’s you.”
❝ Kakashi... What have you done? ❞
The sight before his eyes was a gruesome reminder of the man he was. The sight of so much blood and the scent of death made him sick to the stomach. These were all people, people just like himself and Kakashi. Death happened so quickly to so many, and he hated the concept of it.
Fists clenched by his sides. Kakashi was not like this. Not the Kakashi he remembered. No, ever since that incident, something about the man had changed. No, everything about him had changed. Gai refused to give up on him though. Kakashi was his best friend. Best friends don’t give up on each other.
❝ Come back to the village with me. We’ll talk about this. ❞
