Week 4 Homework for Mold3d Zbrush Character course.

I feel like I’ve learned to really polish up my meshes and pay attention to form these past 4 weeks as well as learn much more about the zbrush UI, so yay ! Really enjoying classes so far and can’t wait to move onto the next project.

Class week 2 - A lesson in restraint

So this week it’s all about taking it back to basics and for me that’s a huge lesson in restraint. I tend to go off the beaten path and sculpt like crazy, and sometimes because of that, my form can get a little sloppy ! So this week I feel like I've learned to be more patient, to really get the basic form blocked out as best you can before rushing ahead. Because let’s be honest, everyone wants to get to the details, or the cool parts. But it’s imperative to get the foundations built properly for your sculpt to really shine, and that, along with more anatomy knowledge is something I have been lacking in.

So here is my little concept - Werebit. In keeping with this month’s spooky theme, I wanted to create something cute and dark. I think I may need to play with his balance if I ever wanted to print him. This was just pushing and pulling primitives such as spheres, cylinders, cones and then subdividing until he was smooth enough to render. Next week onto Dynamesh !

Class week 1 - A journey to better myself and my art.

I’l be posting these weekly to keep a record of my progress and all of my sketches to go along with the 3D work.

So! I decided to do something for myself that I had planned for a long time but felt I didn't have the time to dedicate to. I put it off and put it off, because y’know...when you’re working 13-18 hours a day all you want to do at the end of it is sleep. And that has been my pattern for too long now. Wake up, work, sleep, rinse and repeat. I haven’t really been out there living and interacting. It was all about work, work, work to the point where I ended up hiding away from the world in this little bubble called Second Life. Second Life has done a lot for me. Given me the courage to sell my work even if only in that virtual environment. It gave me the push to be something. But it also gave me a place to hide and I often found myself saying “my work is only good enough for second life”.

Being completely self taught I have always been incredibly harsh on myself, which I think is great to an extent, but you need to remember to give yourself little pats on the back when you achieve things, to say “yes, I did good”. I have always found myself lacking, something I think all artists struggle with. But I have always felt I was missing something that people who had a formal education and a piece of paper to back it up could provide. I tried for a long time to get into a few really great online art schools, but at the time funding was hard to come by which made it not possible for me to take that leap. It left me distraught for a while and left my confidence sorely lacking, because without that piece of paper what was I to do? How could I ever become somebody? So I put on my big girl pants, pulled up my socks and got on with it. I worked my butt off and put everything I had into Second Life, because that WAS a possibility for me.

I feel incredibly lucky to be alive in a time where pretty much everything you need to learn is available mostly for free on the internet. I say mostly, because I signed up to a 10 week online (paid for) sculpting class held by the amazing Mike Defeo @Mold3d http://www.mold3dacademy.com/. You will recognize many of the awesome things he's worked on below ! After watching the recent Zbrush summit 2015 and noticing Mold3d was a sponsor, and being really inspired by the summit broadcasts (especially those amazing sculpt-offs!) I decided now was the time.

Week 1 came around and I was super excited, and very nervous to put myself out there. But it turned out I had nothing to worry about. Our first class meeting was on Sunday just passed and everyone was super friendly and there to learn. We each did a short introduction of ourselves so Mike could get to know us better, at which point my stomach was in my throat and I felt ready to loose my dinner at any moment. Public speaking even if only to a handful of people was never my strong point. I managed to stumble through a very quick 30 second introduction of myself, at which point I was so nervous I'm sure everyone could hear it in my voice. But afterwards, once the meeting was over I realised something. I put myself down a lot. I didn't sound proud of what I had done, and just mumbled through all the things I do wrong instead. Everyone else seemed kind of proud of what they had done, and didn't seem embarrassed to say so. Something I need to work on. I'm feeling good about this, and looking forward to what I will learn from it. Putting yourself out there is scary as shit, believe me. But if you want something, go for it. Do what is necessary to get there and put in the work because it will be worth it.
