Get the PID of a batch script
I have a batch script and want it to write its PID (Process ID) to a file. If you use Linux you know that this is a complicated task. You have to remember which variable contains the PID ($!, $?, $$, $!, $*, there are so much) and then you have to do complicated things like 'echo $$ > pid.file'. With windows it is much easier: If the batch script runs in a window, just set the window title to something unique, find this unique string in the tasklist and extract the pid. If the script doesn't run in a window then I think you can do this: Get the PIDs of all cmd-processes, pass them to a child-process where you create a new list of all cmd-Process-PIDs and compare the lists. Hopefully only one new PID was added, thats the PID of the child-process. Then get the PID of the parent-process (there is a command for this) and return it to the parent-process or write it directly to a file. (I haven't tried this yet.)

Sort order in windows explorer
In a file browser I expect the directories to be at the top and the files below them, sorted like chosen in the header. So I've not been amused that it was changed in the windows explorer so that it always changes from top to bottom. I have to scroll nearly all the time. A pain in the ass, especially when sorting by date. I've looked into it and someone suggested to use the column "date" instead of "date modified". To my surprise the sorting worked as expected (why is it different for different columns?!?), but the displayed date is not what I want. Where is the checkbox "directories always at the top"? What moron thought that changing the sorting order might be a good idea?

Timestamp
I needed a variable containing a timestamp to use in a batch file. Linux, Shell: ts=$(date +%Y-%m-%d-%H-%M-%S). As you'd expect it is much simpler with windows batch files. There are even multiple solutions.
sleep
Perhaps you know the sleep command from Linux. You might think that there is something like that for the windows commandline too. windows 7 has timeout (a very powerful program that can only handle seconds and always needs the /t switch). windows xp doesn't have something like that. The advice is to use ping. WTF!?

Copy and Paste
Have you ever tried to copy and paste text via select and middle click in windows (like it can be done in Linux)? It doesn't work out of the box (of course). But even worse: I can't find a way to get it working with a third party tool. All I can find are stupid suggestions involving software that is only available with certain hardware or things that break copy and paste completely. Or even the suggestion to use ctrl+c and ctrl+v m(
