I love narratively complex and dark video games where the player can dress the main character so people post clips of the most agonizingly sad and soul crushing cutscenes but the main character is wearing the ugliest most unserious fucking hat you’ve ever seen. Partially nude while getting the news his whole family was killed. In those jester shoes with the bells finding his best friend’s corpse on the battlefield.

It was worth the wait.

Huge map. Beautiful soundtrack. Tight gameplay. Great writing. Exactly what I expected from Team Cherry. I can see why it took 7 years. $20 for a game this polished (though not without its flaws) feels like highway robbery.

Some random thoughts below. Spoilers.

First and foremost, I'm so glad Sherma didn't die. Perfect baby. Never have I ran so fast to do a quest when I found he disappeared in Whiteward.

I completely missed getting kidnapped. Didn't get to see Hornet snap a bitch's neck during the ONE time the new rendition of her theme plays. Pity. I was waiting to hear [some version of] her theme the whole game.

I loved the characterization of Hornet. She’s pragmatic and direct, but not without empathy. This reddit post sums it up better than I could:

As someone who is a masochist likes a challenge, I personally found the difficulty just right, barring some horribly obnoxious setups. The 10 enemy wave in High Halls... good god. Thank you Garmond and Zaza. 🫡😭

Much like the first game, the runbacks/bench placements are my main complaint, though it didn't sour my experience. I took everything I said about The Last Judge's piddly little runback when I made it to Groal...

I wish Cogwork Core was bigger so I could've enjoyed the banger of a track for longer.

Speaking of music, how dare Bilewater have such a nice track. Keeping the players relaxed while trudging through that hellhole, eh? I see you, Team Cherry.

First Sinner, (both) Cogwork Dancers, and (both) TROBBIOOO!! 🗣 were my favorite bosses. And of course, Lace and Lost Lace. Karmelita gets honorable mention for kicking my ass.

I may or may not have gotten a little teary-eyed from the reveal at the end. 🖤

EDIT: I FORGOT THE TWISTED BUD CONSTANTLY CRYING IN YOUR INVENTORY EVERY TIME YOU OPENED IT. It seems like most people found it annoying. I found it amusing. Sing me your whiny tones in one headphone ear while I sort through my shit, oh little parasite. And I had it for quite awhile because I didn't know what to do with it lol.
