Nola Wren: “Levitate”
Tough yet confessional, uncompromising and triumphant, its muscles flex in rhythm as its blood rushes. “Levitate” is the dark, dangerous, dazzlingly-produced and volcanically-performed new single from New York City’s Nola Wren. Written and produced by the artist herself, you can stream the track on Spotify right now.

From the nostalgic to the galactic...
…I hope you’ve enjoyed stepping inside my brain. I used to think my inspirations weren’t all that connected, but now I think it’s pretty clear where my heart lies: somewhere in a galaxy far away, wearing pink…

Star Cluster Westerlund 2, Gum 29 (located 20,000 light-years away from Earth in the constellation Carina)
I sift through NASA/Hubble space images a few times a week. This universe is a vast and remarkable place, but sometimes I get wrapped up in stuff that doesn’t actually matter. Observing awe-inspiring images of outer space is one way I ground myself and put things in perspective.

Prophet-6 Analog Synthesizer / Manicanparty’s “Monarch” (Acoustic Version)
This is the most magical instrument I’ve ever gotten to use. It belongs to Pat Morrissey, a friend of Dave’s and a founding member of Manicanparty, an indie pop band which I highly recommend checking out. The acoustic version of their song “Monarch” from their 2013 self-titled EP has been in heavy rotation for me lately. The lush melody and poignant lyrics swirl together in perfect harmony, swelling to a heavenly chorus that reads like pure poetry to me:
“I’m a monarch butterfly
Ink blotted but still alive
I was tied to the hollow tree
But the black birds set me free”

“Asteroid” 1963 Custom Corvette built by George Barris
Fact #1: Pink is my favorite color.
Fact #2: I don’t know how to drive. I passed the test 9 years ago, then proceeded never to get behind a steering wheel ever again.
Fact #3: I would totally re-learn how to drive for a shimmery pink Corvette like this one.

“Knife” Lyrics
These are pages from one of my many notebooks that I use for writing lyrics. The pages are filled front to back with rambling stream of conscious thoughts, rhyme lists, and fragmented phrases that eventually become lyrics. Here, you can see the lyrics of the chorus to “Knife” beginning to take formation. It took me and my co-writer Kill Dave a full two sessions to iron out the lyrics to “Knife's” chorus: Twist the knife a bit harder / Can you kill the monster in me? / Twist the knife a bit harder / When I hit the ground, you bleed. Not pictured: rudimentary doodles of bananas oozing hot pink paint.

“Kabukichō” - photograph of Tokyo at night by Liam Wong
When I stumbled upon Liam Wong’s night photography a few months ago on Instagram, I fell in love. The luminous, neon saturated streets of Tokyo featured in his stunning images are almost surreal, as if taken from the universe of Blade Runner.

Kara Renee Francavillo, a.k.a. Nola Wren, is a singer, songwriter and producer from Brooklyn, New York, and she’s just released her new single “Knife”, muscular, mysterious and irresistibly melodic. You can stream it on Spotify and download it from iTunes, where you can find all of her previous singles as well.
She’s very kindly agreed to take over our site for the afternoon, where she’ll be sharing her influences and inspirations. Okay, off she goes…
(The Nola Wren TAR Takeover Part 1)
Brooklyn-based songwriter/producers Nola Wren (Kara Francavillo) and Kill Dave (David Dahlquist) recently teamed up to create “Knife”, a bold electro pop banger peppered with crystalline vocals, grinding synths, and a sweltering guitar solo. This is Dahlquist’s first release under the moniker Kill Dave, as well as his first collaboration with Nola Wren.
Nola Wren: “We hit it off — particularly over a shared love for Crystal Castles and the Drive Soundtrack — and decided to try working on a song together. There was zero pretense involved in this collaboration, and that’s probably why it worked out so well. We just followed our guts and gave it our best shot, and created something we’re genuinely excited to share.”
Kill Dave: “Nola’s style of writing felt like a breath of fresh air to me. When she first brought me the vocal idea for ‘Knife,’ I could tell it was something worth working on. When we bashed out the idea for the chorus during our first session together, I knew the song needed to be finished.”
Nola and Kill Dave are currently in the studio working on the follow up track to “Knife”, to be released early November.
