I’ve been toying with the idea of making my own TTRPG, and I agree with not saying “just ignore the rules if you feel like it”. I was considering, however, a “hacking” chapter that was more “here’s why we did this - if you want to alter things, you should do it informed”. I wonder if that approach is healthier.

This is essentially what A.N.I.M. does with Eureka and yes it is healthier. People are going to modify your game. Urging them to play by the rules first, and explaining why the rules are what they are and how they can be safely altered makes it so they don’t break the thing before they’ve even started playing.

Also, explaining the reasoning behind your rules helps greatly with interpreting the rules; if something is worded in a way that's potentially ambiguous, the reader misses a vital word, or two players have a disagreement, having the spirit of the rules accessible gives players a much better chance to arrive at the intended interpretation.
