A Modern Diagnosis of “Hysteria”

“Female hysteria,” a popular diagnosis until the 20th century, seems to linger over medical assessments today. Many women told me that doctors routinely accuse them of overreacting or being dramatic. Doctors invalidate their pain, especially when it’s related to their reproductive health.

So women have learned to take treatment into their own hands – whether that means buying a blood pressure cuff to use at home, researching symptoms and disorders that doctors aren’t trained to recognize, or talking to other sufferers in private Facebook groups.

When Amy, 35, fell on her head and broke her arm, she went to the ER. By the time she arrived, she was slurring her words. But the male nurse didn’t write her symptoms in her chart. When she finally saw the doctor, he told her to take Advil and return to work.

Amy, who was in severe pain by this point, insisted on an X-Ray, which revealed the broken bone. When she left the hospital that night, the same male nurse gave her a low-dose painkiller and told her that she had no real medical problem.

This seems to be a uniquely female brand of medical treatment. To make sure that I wasn’t ignoring mistreatment of male patients, I asked men to respond to the same survey questions I’d asked the women.

TW Rape

Lately I’ve been thinking.

I was watching a TV show, a lead female character re-met her rapist from more than 10 yrs previous. She held her husband back from speaking to the man, she didn’t want a scene. I then found myself explaining many facets of the way she acted to my SO, Her resistance to talk about it, then needing to talk about it, the depressive state she entered, the oily feeling she was experiencing that no shower washes away.. 

I then realized that of my own incidents at the first one, I did not hold back when I told people, I told my friends and I told his friends,  I was naive enough to believe that that could end well. I lost alot all of those friends, the ones that I didn’t held ties to him like nothing ever happened, I had to see him, and with pushing from friends and manipulation from him. I suffered. When I subsequently experienced other instances, I told no one. I stuffed it down deep and kept it to myself. “This is what telling people gets you”, I told myself, “hurt”

I’ve found better friends since, I’ve found ones that listen, Theres no advice to be had here, Its a shit situation, its worse without support. I may be jaded, I am jaded, against seeking support.

But to anyone else out there, build a support. FUCK those who won’t support you, they don’t deserve you, do not let them define your situation. You have every right in the world to shut out that toxicity. You are loved. I am here, others like me are here, you have support. If you don’t find it at first keep going.

it literally breaks my heart that someone who admits to sexually assaulting women, who openly calls for discrimination, who is utterly and completely unpredictable, immature, and bigoted, can win over someone so incredibly competent, who’s detractors can only say she’s untrustworthy. It kills me that instead of making history, and electing an amazing qualified female candidate, america could be electing the most openly sexist and racist candidate in modern times.
