The level of respect and understanding of boundaries and the true meaning of consent being shown in this show (so far) really makes me so happy.
We often see consent depictions in shows solely focusing mainly on sex but it applies to so many more aspects too, about your autonomy and what you decide is okay to happen to you in any setting, not just a sexual one. And we see this shown perfectly in episode 3 when Win accidentally walks in on Team showering. Just because previously Team has consented to his body being seen before doesn’t mean it applies always - this is a completely different and separate time. He wasn’t prepared or expecting to be seen and based on the reaction doesn’t want to be seen - he hasn’t consented to it. Win isn’t entitled to seeing Team’s body just because he has previously and I love that he gets that. Win perfectly understanding that, quickly and immediately apologising, leaving, and letting Team have his space, control, and privacy back. He respects Team both as a person and also his choices, needs and boundaries. This is the representation I love to see.
Just because there’s consent to one thing it doesn’t provide a blanket consent for everything. Past consent doesn’t mean future consent. Consent can change and be revoked at any time. It’s so refreshing to see it shown outside of a sexual moment too.

Team really does just turn into a kitten the moment he's faced with Win. No bravado, nothing at all, just this automatic reaction to Win that he can't help and doesn't know how to handle and so he runs and he runs and he runs because the feeling is unfamiliar and that is so frightening.
Win knows, though, despite Team thinking he doesn't.
Because Team matters to Win and he might not want to admit it or acknowledge it because he doesn't know where it will lead... but he does matter. He matters a lot, he matters the most and it will take time for him to learn and for him to see that but Win already knows that Team matters to him and Team will learn.
You can be afraid of everything else in the world, but don't be afraid of me.
It means more with each episode, to know how much it must mean to Win and to Team to say that openly, to acknowledge both his fear and his feelings, to place trust in each other.
That instant reaction, the way Win dives onto the bed to wake Team and pulls him into his arms and holds him until he can talk, checks on him and keeps him close and then refuses to leave, takes care of him, tender as can be, watching over him, worried and soft, and then the way the next morning Team is all smiles in a way he hasn't been in some time, all laughter as he greets his friends. Even the smallest amount of comfort can make sure a difference.
The way Team just falls when Dean criticizes him, his entire face and body collapse, and then he steps past Win and stares because he expects him to be just as disappointed, to be upset at him, for everyone to be upset at him. He's exhausted, he's stressed, he's having nightmares and now he's just waiting for more criticism, more people to tell him he's wrong and not doing good enough and not trying hard enough.
And then Win is worried, he's not upset, he's gentle and he's worried, he knows he isn't sleeping and he teases him to break the tension of that uncertainty, that discomfort, and Team doesn't know what to do besides listen so listen he does.
One of the best things about the way consent is used in Between Us is that it not only highlights exactly how sexy consent can be, not only that it proves that asking about sex and permission can be amazingly attractive and attentive, but it also helps to show how the haunting nature of Team's anxiety can be calmed and comforted, how he can be supported with love and care and how much it changes him when he can be certain. The consent is glorious because it enhances every scene between them with the certainty that they both want this and that they want all of it. There can be no question because they asked and answered all the questions.
There is nothing sexier than consent and Win and Team are proof.

Hello, I am asking to you because you are the blog I follow who watch the most BL so maybe you know about this but what happened to war of y ? I completely forgot this show but then remembered that it must still be airing as it has 20 episodes but when I went to the tag, it was only gifs from Billyseng episodes that aired months ago. Nobody new was talking about it, it looks like it was totally forgotten and nobody watch it and I mean it can’t be, I know there has been others BL that blew up in between but for the actors, people must have stick around and there are far worse BL that still had an audience until the end. I tried to do my research but I found nothing so I thought maybe you knew more ?
I'm still watching it and still seeing posts about it so... I dunno, anon, probably tumblr tags being weird?
It's definitely gotten a lot quieter since that first set, though. And there are a lot of reasons for that including why a lot of people have dropped it and I can definitely discuss that. But I have been steadily making posts about it the whole time and have talked about why the show isn't what people want but anyway....
So, problem number 1: It's a show about all the issues in filming and creating BLs and about why the shows and the fandom and the creation is hurting people, actors and creators. So it's literally about why the thing we're watching and enjoying is bad and is hurting people and it creating drama and pain in others. Which is not super appealing to watch overall especially when it comes with a mixed bad of very superficial messages about those issues.
Problem number 2: The message is very muddy. Every set of five episodes tries to tackle so many issues and so many things that nothing is ever clear or deep. It's all very surface level. 'Reality shows make people bad!' 'Too much ambition hurts people!' 'Sexual abuse is bad!' And, yes, they're all true and they're important but that doesn't exactly make for good TV. It often feels like a PSA inside a show.
Problem number 3: Most of the endings are open rather than happy. I'd say that the latest one gave us the most genuinely happy ending of the three so far because the other two ended with the possibility of happiness but not with the reality of happiness and that's not what most people are seeking out when they want to watch BL.
Problem number 4: Cheewin has a very distinct style and War of Y feels like his ultimate baby and he is using it to show off his style and that style can be off-putting. I've mentioned this a few times in other posts but I find War of Y most enjoyable when I watch it was detachment rather than enjoying the characters and that's... that's very Cheewin. Getting attached to characters in War of Y is hard because the show is basically about everyone, at the core, being a bad person in some way because of the situation they're in.
Problem number 5: The show picks the worst issues to highlight instead of the more interesting ones. Like, Y-Idol was basically about how reality shows make people bad people which... no duh? But it had the potential to be about accepting yourself as a feminine gay man despite having shaped yourself into a masculine straight man to please your father and they touched on that but refused to explore it more and it's a problem when the issues they gloss over are more interesting than the ones they focus on.
So.
There you are, anon! What I think the biggest problems with War of Y are. I will continue watching and making at least some commentary on it as we approach the final five episodes and the last story arc of cheating and drama. But I have been following along the entire time and I know I'm not the only one. Though I know there aren't as many as there were at the start.
maybe the purpose of life is to fill it with as many positive things as you can. regardless of how bad life gets, don’t let it steal your personality, your hobbies, your style. after coming home from a bad day at work maybe you need to sit down and read a nice book. after studying non-stop for so long, maybe you should finish that crochet project you’ve been putting off because you’re so busy. maybe we should prioritize the things we love, the things that make us happy, and not just the things we’re forced to do to survive. in this society, a little peace from the outside world is important. don’t give up on the things that make you happy. don’t forget about yourself.
I cannot believe this is what we're getting in week three. Anxiety and nightmares, comfort and protection, Win looking out for Team even as Team struggles just to find a place for himself. They start these regular competitions to try to help their swim team only for Win to realize that this is hurting Team and then to seek to help him, to love him, to protect him and the way Team stiffens in his nightmares, the way he doesn't seek anyone out but tries to keep it to himself but in the end Win is still there and suddenly the way he touches him, treats him, teases him in UWMA makes even more sense because their nights are so serious, their nights are filled with so much that the days must be smiles and gentle to make up for that.
You can be afraid of the world, but never be scared of me.
