This is an unfriendly reminder that it's irresponsible to let your cats free roam.
Today I collected the days-old corpse of a beautiful cat from the side of a dual carriageway, wrapped him in a towel, took him to work, checked his cold, stiff body for a chip, bagged him up and put him in the freezer.
He was neutered, microchipped, and had a name. He was someone's pet, and he was killed on the road and left there in the dirt and rain. Thousands of people had driven past him and left him lying there. None of the cat lovers who reported his body on the local missing cats Facebook page had attempted to retrieve him, but all felt very strongly that someone should.
So who collects these cats? People like my colleagues and I in animal rescue, veterinary workers, and a tiny handful of the cat-loving public. We're the ones who have to decide whether we'll need a shovel as well as gloves to scrape Whiskers off the hard shoulder. We're putting on our high vis and doing mental risk assessments as to whether we can safely retrieve Fluffy's body or not. We're rolling down the windows as we transport them and trying not to think about the smell of death. We're contacting their distraught owners.
It takes a toll. I want to collect these cats and try to reuinite them with their families, but seeing and hearing about so many preventable deaths is emotionally exhausting.

I once left work at 8pm, drove onto the duel carriageway, and saw a cat a way ahead of me dart out of a fence. I couldn’t even finish saying “no no no” before the car 50ft in front of me hit it. It went under the wheels.
I pulled over, did the mental risk assessment and had to wait a while because the cat was smack bang in the middle of the road and the cars kept coming. I went over to her with a towel I keep in my car for this exact scenario and wrapped her up and put her in my passenger seat. I keep a stethoscope in the car for this too.
She was already dead.
I took her straight back to work. She was 2 years old, chipped and owned. She was a couple roads away from home, likely heading back for the night.
That one stayed with me for a long time.
