So, I paint my nails pretty regularly these days. I also work as a barista/cashier pretty regularly these days. A few weeks back, I had a customer come in, a fairly typical, sheltered, suburban soccer mom, and she ordered a latte from me. She saw my brightly colored nails and said, “Wow, you’re so brave! My son asked me about painting his nails, and if it’s okay for boys to do that. Now I’ll tell him there’s a cool guy who does it too!” It was a nice moment, very cute.

Then, last week, she came in again, and said, “Hey, I’m so glad you’re here! I want you to meet someone!” She then brings her son forward, and says, “Okay sweetie, show him what you did!” And he throws his hands up, showing off his bright, sparkling blue nails. He shows them off, and I show mine off to him. He smiles. We fist bump.

Guys, I’ve only wanted to cry once at work before, and that was when someone ordered a large dry soy cappuccino on ice.

This time, though. This was a good cry.

I can't believe how selfish mom 1 is being and I hope Raven isn't too hurt by all of this. No one deserves to be uprooted like that because of someone else's inability to deal with their issues.

I don’t think I necessarily agree with you.  Sure, it sucks to be uprooted, but Raven is only 5.  She’s only been in school for a couple of months, and honestly she’s really just excited.  Also, mom 1 is moving to her original homestate where her family and a lot of her friends will be to help her out and for Raven to grow up around.  Here, all she knows is us really.

Always a good idea, actually.  Making decisions about a situation where someone is doing what they feel they have to, especially when it comes to their kid and what is best for them?  Not your best move.

Christ (or your preferred deity or Newtonian Law) protect you if you try and tell me that I’m being selfish if I EVER felt the need to go home with my kids.  It would be a MAJOR goddamned decision, and not one I would make lightly.  See how the other parent or ex-parent backs her up?  That’s because, unlike you, they’re willing to give Raven up rather than live with half a child (read the Story of Solomon and the baby, it’s a great metaphor).

I don’t know they’re whole story, and I don’t need to.  I do know that these two women loved each other and love Raven enough to try and do right by her.  Fuck off.

Hey, I’ve got kids. One is about Raven’s age and the other is just like her in personality. I can’t really imagine a situation where I’d end up leaving H or W…especially because my family are assholes…but I’d protect my kid at all costs. People who don’t get that can suck a bag of dicks.
