The Doppelganger Timeline.

I have a question for anyone that's into The Vampire Diaries.

I know it is kind of universally recognized as canon but I'm not sure if it actually is stated, but do the Petrova doppelgangers actually only pop up every 500 years?

I've had this question for a while because it makes some sense before they introduce the Silas and Amara storyline, but I always assumed even before I watched the Silas storyline that the doppelgangers were more frequent, but because of their rarity it was very hard for them to be found out of all the people on earth. I understand where the idea comes from because Tatia, Katherine, and Elena were the only doppelgangers we were originally introduced to and they were all spaced 500 years apart. With the introduction of Silas and Stefan being doppelgangers I think it makes less sense though.

From what I remember the doppelgangers were created to restore a sense of balance and every doppelganger is meant to find their respective doppelgangers. Since Stefan was born in the 1800s wouldn't that mean there was a doppelganger of Amara sometime then? Or even if there wasn't wouldn't that mean there is a possibility for there to be more female doppelgangers throughout time?

I'm writing a fanfic that works very closely to canon and I don't want to go against something that was clearly stated as canon that I am just forgetting about. Was Stefan a fluke?

I've said this a lot in tiktok comment sections but I LOVE the way Jenny Han uses Belly and other characters as narrators, because it is truly done so well, and forces you to look at the story through a deeper lens than you would if you had a standard narrator or no narrator at all.

The point of a narrator is to have an outlet for the author. A true narrator is basically god. They are there to watch and explain, they have no stakes in the story and are simply there FOR YOU to have context. They will not misconstrue facts, feelings, or ideas.

Obviously over time this has changed a lot and you see many MANY different versions of narrators nowadays, but often times they still follow the rule of having no stakes in the story. Because they are not a character, they are a vessel.

Any character that is the narrator their own story is simply not a narrator. They are unreliable, they have stakes, and their own thoughts and feelings will ALWAYS change the perspective of the story.

Belly is a perfect example of this, as she sees the other characters, we see the other characters. Most times when people use this type of narrative storytelling we follow solely the way the character is viewing the events playing out. It's easier to write that way. But the show does not do that. We are told by Belly what she is seeing, what she is thinking or feeling about the other characters, we are told what she knows as fact. Even though we actually know more than her, we know more about what the other characters are thinking and feeling because though she is the narrator, there are things Jenny wants us to be aware of that Belly simply is not.

As people, which these characters are, we misread situations all the time. We think we know what other people are thinking, we think we know the best in situations, but we don't. Belly as a character in this story is not immune to that. It is so easy for her to focus on good parts or bad parts of her relationships depending on how she is feeling about the other person.

It plays on your emotions as a viewer and it's something so interesting to me.

I have my critiques of this shows writing, of course I do, but I think it's ingenious and one of the reasons why the 2 sides are so polarizing. Because depending on who you like better, you're going to do EXACTLY what Belly does. Ignore all the other things you're aware of and just listen to and pay attention to what is fitting your own narrative.

I love this show, so much honestly, despite the fact it seems like something I'd have no interest in I was fully sucked in and I truly think it's due to this use of an unreliable narrator cause it's just so well done.

Conrad and "Toxicity"

I've been seeing a lot of people throw around the word toxic, especially when it comes to Conrad. But, what he is doing is not toxic.

Yes, he is bad at communication, and that can be a fatal flaw when it comes to a relationship. As we saw with Belly. But, that is not an inherently toxic trait.

First off let's talk about what toxicity means in terms of relationships and people.

Toxic traits include:

Disrespect

Dishonesty

Not Supporting Others

Controlling Others

Manipulating Others

Not talking Accountability

He does not actively do any of these things. Yes, he has his moments. He was extremely disrespectful and petty after he found Jeremiah and Belly. But quickly after, once he had some time to cool off and come to terms with things, he explained and apologized and took himself out of the equation so as not to put pressure on Belly to choose. He apologized and told Belly she was justified in her reaction at the funeral. He respected Belly's decision not to date him as to not get in between him and his brother. He explained what he was going through and asked if it was okay for him to date Belly once he had the knowledge that Jeremiah had also been interested in her.

We are also shown throughout this last season that he is trying to work on his communication. It is hard to break out of the habit of closing yourself off and internalizing everything, but he is at least trying to get over that.

If he truly was a toxic character or boyfriend, he would be. He very easily could have been written that way. Not taking other people's feelings into account especially in times when it would service him, like the fireplace scene, he wouldn't take accountability for his shitty behavior in the past, he could've used the fact he loves her and used that to manipulate her to get her back, he could've thrown out the fact it was his brother and that they both just lost their mom as a way to guilt trip her into not being with him.

The fact is he doesn't do any of that. Because he is not toxic, he's bad at communicating, he's not emotionally available, and he should not have been in a relationship when he was dealing with his mother dying as well as his first year of college. That's all true.

Please stop throwing around the word toxic without actually addressing what the word means. Thank you.

Why I'm Team Conrad

The fans.

That's genuinely it.

In terms of who Belly should end up with while watching the show, I was evenly split. But, and maybe it's just the side of internet I'm on, but the fans for Jere that I've seen that refuse to analyze the show outside of a Jere is a perfect little angel that can do no wrong lens is crazy to me and pissed me off.

No character in this show is perfect.

Not one of them is mature enough to have a long term committed relationship in the way we are acting like they are. THEY ARE ALL TEENAGERS. They act impulsively and rewrite history to fit their mindset, they don't act objectively or out of the goodness of their hearts, because they are either in highschool or just getting out of highschool.

When I see fan content about Conrad that is Team Conrad its about analyzing why he's so emotionally closed off why he's saying the shit he does and the way Belly reacts or hears it.

When I see fan content about Jere its either about the fact he's the hotter brother or purely defending his actions without talking about why he did those things in the first place. ie "if your brother stole your girl you'd be just as mad"

The content I see based around the two brothers is so inherently different it made me go back and analyze the show differently. And yeah, now I'm totally team conrad because I think its very apparent between the two sides of the Fandom who is analyzing the show critically and who is not.

And that's why I watch TV so I can see how people act towards each other see what they mean behind the words they're saying and what their actions truly convey. And I would much rather be on the side of the Fandom that is watching the show critically and able to admit your favs faults than the side that rewrites the show and only looks at the baseline of what we've been shown.

Immaturity in The Summer I Turned Pretty

I think tsitp is really interesting, mostly because of the immaturity of the three main characters, and that leaks into the Fandom space as well. Each one of the characters is very immature at this current moment but in very different ways, and I really hope we'll get to see how they grow and mature next season.

First off we have Belly. Despite a lot of her actions I really like her mostly because of her space as an unreliable narrator. You have to read into scenes with a more precise lens because we're being fed false information as fact based on how Belly is feeling at the current moment. Which shows her maturity level. She is very insecure but also very self involved. She inflates her importance but often times in a negative way, which leads her to making these incredibly rash decisions and has her flip-flop on her feelings all the time cause she feels like she'll never get her chance again and tries to shield herself from hurt. With Conrad she never trusts his intentions because she's spent so long telling herself he is a fantasy that she can't trust he genuinely loves her or wants to be with her. And with Jeremiah you have kind of the opposite thing happening she never really entertained the idea until he brought it up so now she feels like she can always trust him to be there and love her despite the fact that he's been trying to move on.

With Jeremiah, he is competitive and overconfident. Belly's relationship with Conrad forces him to face both of those without him really wanting to. He does genuinely care for Belly but he gets jealous and scared that he won't be good enough because she's always been in love with Conrad. And it being Conrad just makes it worse for him, because we see that he's always felt overshadowed as the younger sibling and that Conrad was 'the golden boy'. We see with how he reacts to Cam. He is jealous, but he'd be willing to let her date him, barring a little teasing, because he wants her to be happy. But that doesn't happen with Conrad. The only reason he gave them his "blessing" is cause he didn't want to look pathetic. It's a competition and a way to prove he can truly win out over Conrad, and every time she chooses Conrad over him it's a hit to his ego. He wants Belly to be happy, but only if it's not with Conrad.

With Conrad his immaturity is shown in a very different way. Whereas Belly and Jeremiah are immature because of lack of experience and needing to learn, Conrad has had a lot of responsibility. Both of his parents aren't reliable. His dad's never around, and though I love Susannah, she is not flawless. She has a very common belief that you don't talk about hard things you plaster on a smile whether or not you're actually happy because you don't want to bring the people around you down. The problem with that is if you cannot express your emotions or how you're feeling you will either be completely unable to address and understand your feelings or you'll blow up. Conrad is immature in the way he refuses to address his feelings even when he's hurting people because he doesn't know how.

I just think it's really interesting to see especially how the Fandom reacts to it because a lot of us are immature in similar ways and we're going to relate to and care for the characters that act in ways we would.

Anyways I want to hear what other people think of this and any counter arguments to these ideas cause I really like analyzing these characters and their actions.

Something I’ll never understand in shows is when they introduce something like resurrection and it’s used many times throughout the show, but when someone dies they want to stay dead they don’t give a reason as to why they can’t be brought back. The people that normally would do everything in their power to bring that person back doesn’t even try. Like why, give me substantial reasonings.
