So I found gnats in one I my orchid plants. I have no idea where they can from or when they got there. I'm gonna try a few household methods to get did of them and hopefully it works. I read that fungus gnats usually invade plants whose root systems aren't soon well or when there's decaying matter in the soil (making fungus grow well). So I set some traps out for the adults 1. Yellow index card with adhesive tape. 2. Apple cider vinegar with some dishwashing liquid. And I'm currently brewing chamomile tea, which has anti fungal properties. I'm gonna use to it wash the roots and to drench the new potting mix I'm putting the plant in. Then I'm mixing cinnamon (also has anti fungal properties) into the bark mix and sprinkling some on top. Oh, I'll also be washing the pot very well :). My other orchid had some bugs on it that looked like mealy bugs. I only sprayed it with some insecticidal soap and removed the bugs. Seems to have worked so far. I literally have no idea where these bugs are coming from since all of my plants are indoors. The newest plant I brought was a mini rose and it's close to my seedlings which look unaffected by anything. And it's also far away from the orchids. Let's hope this works 💪
Spring roses and a spider.
クチナシです。香りがすごいです。 #gardening
Stunning.
In the centre, you’ll note my first truly growing jalapeño pepper. I’ve had a problem this year: All my early buds have been getting to a point in the growth process (past flowering and budding) where they simply fall off.
So, per a smart woman’s sagely recommendations, I added a little plant food before a rainstorm, let it soak in, and, voilà! My first true pepper (of any variety) of the year!
This makes me one truly proud papa. Plus, another variety has budded in the last week. Very exciting stuff.
Love this.
Garden update! I wanted to share with you guys what is growing in my backyard for summer! This is only some of it. Catnip - its flowering to make seeds which I’d love to sell and share! :) Pomegranates for fall, apples, tomatos, strawberries, lemon balm, and cucumber! All so beautiful and lovely :D
Some of my favorite flowers in my garden right now.
Garlic harvest! Not a bad haul this year. #garlic #gardening #urbanhomestead (at Ockerman Homestead)
Wow!
Soon….very soon.
So I waited for the sun to start going down before going out to water my plants today so that they didn’t steam in their own pots. Of course dusk when its still quite warm out, humid and still, mosquitoes come out and the entire time I’m running around with the hose going “OHGODOHGODOHGOD IM...
My gorgeous flowers have bloomed!!!!! :D
So beautiful!
My alliums continue to multiply; 12 plants this year. Soon going to have to separate a few. #alliums #gardening #mybackyard #novascotia #southshorens #visitnovascotia #iphonegraphy #igershalifax (at Outdoor Nova Scotia)
Lilies
I got some Anastasia lily bulbs at Home Depot. They were on sale for $5 so I figured Id keep them indoor to add some life and color to my apartment.
When I opened the bag, 5 out of 6 bulbs had sprouted stems and long roots. I made sure to leave the stems slightly above the soil. I potted them using some orchid potting mix (basically bark) at the very bottom 1/2 inch of the pot to allow for decent drainage, and some seed starting mix because that was all I had at hand.
Thats my new betta, Eugene :)
So excited to watch everyone grow!
Herb Garden
Planted: basil, parsley, cilantro, rosemary, and lavender. I left the spearmint because I never really use it. I might go get some later on...
The setup: I typically start plants in cut up plastic cups with no drainage. I used some seed starting potting mix by Miracle Grow that I found at Home Depot.
A little basil plant has sprouted :)
Orchids
About a month ago I found some orchids for sale in the 'as is' section of ikea for $3 a pop. Naturally, I couldn't pass up this deal so I bought the only two they had. I was in the process of moving and I can say that they stayed two weeks without water and near a window. Full of light. Kind of a bad idea...
I found that two orchid plants had been stuffed into one pot. Epic. This is what they looked like repotted.
If you notice, the one on the right is slightly sunburned. It didn't make it after a little over a week.
