The goal, says activists, is to give the students "security, stability and salvation."
The first boarding school for transgender students in India is opening today in Kochi in the southeast part of the subcontinent.
The inaugural class at Sahaj International School will have just 10 students, who will study under six trans instructors from the TransIndia Foundation. Activist and artist Kalki Subramaniam will speak at the opening day ceremony.
Students were selected from different areas of society, and include a migrant worker and a disabled person.
“In the beginning, we have a few sponsors supporting us. We are planning to seek financial help from government after proving its worthiness,” school organizer Vijayaraja Mallika told the Indian Express.
The goal, says Mallika, is to give the students “security, stability and salvation.”
What an amazing step forward, India! I know you have a lot of work to do but this is a great start for progression.

Long-Term & Long-Distance in College
My partner and I met during the summer before sophomore year of high school, and quickly developed feelings for each other. I definitely made mistakes: I didn't talk to friends much; I sacrificed sleep and sometimes studying to talk for hours every night; I was easily upset at the idea of not seeing my partner for a couple of days, or if our phone calls had to be cut short. I was afraid of being alone. I became dependent on my partner for my self-confidence and my happiness.
I slowly (finally) realized that I deserved to feel better, that I would be lovable even if I wasn't in a relationship, and that I needed to come up for air and do things to make myself happy. And it worked. I focused on school; I spent more time with my friends and my hobbies again; I felt happier and healthier, as an individual and as half of a couple.
When my partner and I started applying to colleges, we half-joked about going to the same school. We discussed that no matter where we ended up, we loved each other enough to make it work. When we both accepted offers from our dream schools, and realized that they were only an hour and a half away from each other, I felt a little more at ease at the thought of being apart.
We've now made it through two and a half years of college, and of "long-distance." (A couple trains away in the same state is definitely a shorter distance than the separation other couples endure.)
Especially because I have a history of dependency issues, dealing with the distance can still be a challenge. But my partner is very supportive and helps me feel positive. Instead of complaining about how we can't see each other again for two or more weeks, I enjoy the time that we get to spend on the phone or in person. Instead of going to a college just to follow a relationship, I'm happy that I get the opportunity to learn new things and have new experiences, attend interesting events, and make new friends on this beautiful campus. I am maturing and developing myself as an individual, which makes my relationship better. I get to experience college while feeling love and support from my high school sweetheart who is also experiencing college.
It takes a lot of trust, love, patience, dedication, commitment, snapchat, texting and sexting. But some relationships can survive long-distance. Love leaves you vulnerable. Monogamous and long-term commitments are hard. And being apart from that person is even harder. But if you want that kind of commitment, if you're with a pretty great person, if you have fun together and feel safe with them; if you and your partner are patient, trusting, caring and communicate well; then it feels easier, and is definitely worth it.

Transgender Event
We at Sex Week try to cover a lot of ground every year. Even before Leelah's death, we had made it a priority to do an event for/about transgender students this year. Trans friends, we would love to hear your thoughts about this (although do not feel compelled to answer the question).
My question to you is: What do you think our focus should be? Do you have a speaker in mind? What would you like to see out of such an event?
Post of Links
Leelah's Tumblr: Major tw for suicide, abuse, and transphobia, but beyond that get to know the 17-year-old artist.
Thoughts on the meaning of Leelah's death: This is a great article from a trans woman who not only has even more helpful links, but also gives more context to the situation
Mothers for the LGBTQ community: I had read that some mothers had been making audio recordings for trans women to show their support for them. This site collects such stories to give LGBTQ folks a sort of "home for the holidays" if they find their own families are unsupportive.
Resources for Trans folks
Leelah wanted all of her possessions donated to civil rights organizations for transgendered people. While it seems unlikely that her family will comply with those wishes, you can find some of those resources here:

Not a complete list, but here are a few. If you want to reblog and add more, by all means.

Article and text tw: suicide, transphobia
Many of you have already heard about Leelah Alcorn, a 17-year-old transgender woman who committed suicide on Sunday. This, and other article can go more into her story, but Leelah was born and raised in a family who took every effort to stifle her person. Her suicide note on tumblr made it clear that it was these actions that drove her to take her own life.
We at Sex Week wish our condolences to the trans community and to trans women in particular. We send you our thoughts and lend you our ears during this time.

Please love and keep one another safe.

P.S. I'm going to follow up this post with a list of links and resources related to this story. Then, later, I will post a question to the NU community about Sex Week.
cydne-should-be-sleeping:
Some femmes are dominant and some butches are submissive. Some men have vaginas and some women have penises. Sometimes what you call a clit is called a dick by it’s owner, and sometimes a dick is really a clit. Some straight men want to be penetrated and some straight women want to do it. Sometimes people aren’t men or women at all and sometimes genitals aren’t a black and white issue. Sometimes people are different to you, and always, we need to accept this.
It’s the holiday season, and you know what that means – it’s the season to give gifts! Not sure what to get that special someone in your life who’s passionate about reproductive freedom and feminis…
