on a video of 2 older gay men discussing how they feel that being called queer is equally as bad as being called a fag.
there’s a difference between these slurs being occasionally used WITHIN the gay or lesbian community often in a joking way like dykes on bikes for example, and the word being used as a descriptor for the whole community with no way to opt out. not only that, but straight people and mega-corporations have gotten in on the slur fun and are now proudly referring to the entire community of same sex attracted people as “queer” or even college courses and college degrees calling homosexuals and bisexuals “queer”. no other “slur reclamation” has occurred so quickly and has included the majority, the in-group who originally USED the slur against the minority and the out-group. by the way, it’s not like most straight people just started using “queer” when it became politically correct, they NEVER STOPPED referring to same sex attraction as “queer”!!!!! trust me, when you hear southern catholic conservatives use the word “queer”, it doesn’t sound so reclaimed and freeing or all-inclusive or whatever.
it’s insane to me that 2 older gay men are like “hey I don’t like the slur queer and I also don’t like the slur fag” and people have the nerve to be MAD and CONDESCENDING??? what??? “hey we don’t like being called a slur” and people are like “umm WE reclaimed it though and I don’t mind being called it so get over it”
this whole slur reclamation thing should be on an individual level and on an opt-in basis, we shouldn’t be seeing slurs on billboards or advertisements or coming out of straight people’s mouths.
