I really wish people would stop talking about someone being “openly gay.” The fact you don’t know someone’s sexuality is not a statement about that person but an indication of the strength and authenticity of your relationship with that person.

Even if you are a public figure, you are not “in the closet” because a stranger (or a constituent) doesn’t know your sexuality - especially if your election is based on a broad set of policy positions.

If you think that being gay is relevant because they MUST hold other ‘liberal’ worldviews, you have not been paying attention! (see Rob Smith, Albie Amankona et al.)

It is egocentric in the extreme to believe that just because you are aware that someone is gay (or simply not heterosexual), they must somehow be “open.”

And the implication that NOT knowing someone is gay means they are “closed,” hiding or ashamed of their sexuality is a caustic and anachronistic misunderstanding of reality.

It’s ridiculous that gay people are expected to ensure that strangers know their sexuality (especially in a world where that can lead to harm), & it’s absurd that when strangers do learn that someone's gay, they think it redefines that person intrinsically & professionally.

Until we start calling heterosexual people “openly straight” (and let’s not) - let’s consign “openly gay” to the same rubbish pile where we dumped “admitting you’re gay,” and “confined to a wheelchair.”

Both Rowling and Cherry are gender-critical activists who have been fierce critics of Sturgeon’s policies on trans rights. As first minister, Sturgeon had led on gender reform – and successfully saw a bill on self-identification for trans people passed by the Scottish parliament with support from MSPs in all of Holyrood’s parties. However, the Tory-run UK Government then blocked the bill from becoming law.

In her memoir Frankly, published last year, Sturgeon said she had never considered sexuality, including her own, to be binary.

Cherry went on: “As she flirts and teases us with the idea that she might be a lesbian, what I would say to her is you need to think about what you owe the generations of lesbians and gay men who fought so it was acceptable in this country, Scotland and the United Kingdom, to be gay and to have equal rights. To realise our protections under the Equalities Act are just as important as those of trans people.”

Cherry stressed that “when it comes to people’s personal lives and sexuality, I think people are entitled to privacy, and I think Nicola is entitled to privacy”. But with the issue having being mentioned in Sturgeon’s memoir, she added: “If she wants to bring the issue up then people are obviously going to want to go beyond the strange statement she made about her sexuality not being binary.”
