The comfort of you: a shikafuga fanfic. (Nara Shikaku/Uchiha Fugaku.

Fugaku can’t even recall where he was exactly, somewhere forested just on the edge of the Land of Wind. He remembers being dug in for a few days with a small squad of chunin. They had to wait till the scouts from Suna passed and Fugaku passed the time by cataloging the vast wildlife they saw. His favorite was an orange long haired monkey with a baby clinging to his back. 

He’s reminded of it now. 

Shikaku is plastered across his back, his arms wrapped around his chest. Fugaku likes the relaxing warmth as Shikaku dozes. Fugaku is acutely aware of Shikaku’s nose cuddling against his hair.  The rhythm of his breathing is soothing, but it's not easy to work on the KMPF budget proposal under these conditions. 

When Shikaku stirs from his nap, he sleepily presses kisses against the nape of Fugaku’s neck. He draws in a sharp breath and tries to focus. They need to figure out the staffing issues at the station and a small budget increase might help, but at least he can count on Shikaku to stay awake at the next meeting. 

“Comfortable?’ Fugaku asks. 

Shikaku hums in content, but he doesn’t answer. His lips move from Fugaku’s neck to tease the curve of his ear. 

Fugaku sighs, “Do you intend to distract me or are you going to pry my budget from wherever Shimura is no doubt funneling it to.”

“For you, anything.”

“Damn flirt,” Fugaku scoffs, “I’m serious.”

Shikaku hugs him tighter, kissing his temple, “I am too.”

Fugaku fidgets, feeling bashful at the honesty in his tone. He considers for a moment wiggling out of Shikaku’s grasp, but he doesn’t particularly want to move either. Fugaku is worried about finishing the report in time, his sons, his clan. The worries are all heavy on his chest but Shikaku’s hands rub soothingly against his collarbone and it does make it feel easier to breathe. 

Fugaku says, “I appreciate that, but I think your time would be better suited elsewhere than clinging to being like a starfish.”

“You’re warm.” Shikaku replies, “this is my favorite place to nap.”

“Nap in the sun then. You’re a man not a lazy cat.”

Shikaku laughs and his teeth playfully nip at Fugaku’s earlobe. 

It makes Fugaku laugh in return. 

“I can move if your back hurts,” Shikaku says. 

“No, it’s okay…if you’re comfortable then I am.”

Fugaku doesn’t really know how to put it into words other than that. He loves how much Shikaku wants to touch him. It’s comforting in a way he isn’t quite used to. His parents were never the touchiest of people when it came to their children and Fugaku knows he’s prone to conducting himself in a similar manner with his own sons. 

Shikaku takes every opportunity he can to be as close as possible to Fugaku and it’s nice. 

The other day, Fugaku decided to pick up Sasuke on a whim. Shikaku’s persistence has him going with his impulses more often, so Fugaku decided to try it. 

He buried his face into his son’s hair, cuddling the child close in his arms. 

Sasuke’s surprise quickly turned into sheer joy as he squealed and curled his body close to his father’s. Fugaku shoved down the nervousness at such a display boiling in his stomach. 

He loves Sasuke. 

There’s no need to worry about prosperity here. 

Fugaku tries to remember the same in these moments alone with Shikaku. He takes Shikaku’s hand and brings it to his mouth, kissing each knuckle. 

“Thank you for sitting with me.”

“It’s no trouble, none at all.”
