under the stars | kiara & ariel.
Kiara had never travelled so far into the Outlands. She couldn’t speak for Ariel (who knew where that girl had been? She probably didn’t know herself) but she had always seemed to catch herself at the border between city and wasteland, amongst the dive bars and seedy shops, unable to take a step further because – well, she didn’t know. It might have had something to do with Simba’s voice in the back of her mind. Incessant. Annoying. (fading) That voice wasn’t there anymore. Despite being the most impulsive person she’d ever met, Simba had been eighty percent of Kiara’s impulse control. Now that he was gone, there was no-one to talk her out of all her bad ideas, or prevent Ariel from enabling them, and so the two girls found themselves trekking through the Outlands, arm in arm, pretending they weren’t about to collapse under the weight of their packs.
It hadn’t all been a matter of boldly going, though. The two had met at Ariel’s house, packed up, set off laughing, and had promptly come to a halt where the city ended and the Outlands, the real Outlands, began. The sun beat down, the sounds of the city could be heard faintly in the distance, and the two exchanged a look that said, we shouldn’t be doing this. Simba’s ghost rose up in the back of Kiara’s mind. Of course you shouldn’t be doing this, he seemed to say. Go home before I tell Dad. (but simba never sounded like that never sounded so far away and formal and the simba in her mind’s eye was smirking but not in the way he did not in the right way and she couldn’t remember how he looked and she didn’t know if she ever would) Kiara took a deep breath, put her shoulders back, and flashed a small grin at Ariel, one she had seen on her cousin’s face many a time, a display of cocky bravery she wasn’t quite feeling.
“Dare you,”
And then they were off again, across the invisible border, and everything seemed to return to normal. Perhaps setting off in the summer hadn’t been the brightest idea, but after a few hours of walking, they seemed to have found a nice spot. A few trees were around to give shade, and didn’t look too bad for being half-dead, there was a small lake close by (lake was a strong word. it was more like a large puddle, but there was still more water than mud, and that was good enough for her) and there was a lot of open space where they could pitch their tent. Kiara shrugged off her pack, letting it thud off the dry ground as she stretched. There was a dull ache in her shoulder blades and the small of her back and the muscles in her legs burned from the walk, but she didn’t want to bring the mood down by complaining. Pulling off her sunglasses, she gave the place another glance around and turned towards the redhead, gesturing around with the hand that held the glasses; the other had come up to rub the back of her neck, which was feeling a little tender after being exposed to so much sun.
“Well, this looks pretty cosy to me. An’ I don’t know about you, but I need to take a break before my legs fall off. Should we make camp, or keep going?”
I do apologize princess, but I have to ask everyone I know this now: Me, Eric and Phillip
Hey, Charming! Is there a story behind this?
Um... I don’t actually know any of you that well, thinking on this, so don’t get offended, okay? Uh, wed you, because you always seem real nice, bed Phillip, not that you’re not real handsome or anything, but... anyway! Uh, that leaves Eric. Simba seemed to have a few problems with him when he was here, so... guess I’ve gotta carry those on. Behead Eric. Sorry.
Seriously, what’s the story behind this?
hmmmm how abouuuuut....me, ariel, aaaaannnndddd that odette girl i like her i feel like she wouldn't be afraid to shoot someone if they annoyed her. also, like, hi and stuff. duh.
Ooooooh, tough ones. Okay, let me think, let me think. I mean, I guess I would marry Ariel, because we’ve had a secret plot to elope for the last six years, and I can’t back out on that now. I would bed you, because you look like you’d be great at sleepovers, and I hear all the Waters’ are good at holding their breath.
And that leaves Odette to be beheaded because a girl who could shoot you when she’s annoyed is a threat to my country, and I won’t stand for it.
Oh, and, hi! Man, I haven’t seen you in so long - were you at that party, Aurora’s one? Did you hear about it?
Rafiki, Zazu, that one hyena that almost ate us when we were nine
Okay, you were nine. I was six. And that was a horrible experience that will forever be burned into my mind, so behead that hyena thing. Uhhh, marry Zazu and pull a black widow to get out of it like, that night. Bed Rafiki, because a guy that old, he has to know some things, you know?
are you doing the thingy? Becauuuse me, Herc... and Kovu!
Oh, come on, that's just...
I mean, I can’t behead you, because we have our plan to elope to your ridiculous fork palace, so I guess wed you. And Herc’s really cute... but so is Kovu. But, if Kovu and you have a thing, and you’re marrying me, then I guess he hasn’t much going on, sooo... wed you, bed Herc, and behead Kovu.
Fuchsia and green!
Anna, hey! Awwww, I I would LOVE to be your friend! I think you’re super cute too!
Are you in town any time soon? We could meet up, finally do things - how’s everything up in Arendelle?
teal and fuchsia!!
Awwwww, Melody.
I’d love to get to know you more too! I did drop by your house after - y’know, after the funeral, to say thanks, but your aunt said you weren’t in, and I’ve just been sorta busy since then, so... we could maybe like, do lunch? Or a beach day? You seem really cool, so... wAIT, do you like rollercoasters?

“You’re way too good for me, you know that?” Kiara leaned over to kiss Ariel’s forehead, again and again and again. “But this is gonna be a long forever. Maybe we should split them up. You always did give the better kisses,”
yellow flicker beat.
she sits in her room at five, at ten, at fifteen, hands clasped in her lap, and she thinks: who am i? who am i going to be? what if i never know the real me? when am i going to stop hurting?
the bathroom light is dying, bare bulb flickering intermittently in the night. kiara pays it no mind, crouched over the sink, hair clutched in one hand as she takes scissors to it with the other. she hacks wildly, carelessly, the blades biting into her scalp, but she lets the droplets of blood fall, lets them wind around her neck, a new ruby necklace she doesn’t want to take off. when she throws the scissors into the basin, her hair sticks up in messy golden tufts, and she thinks, this is perfect, this is it, this is the start.
when she dances, she can feel the beat of the music in her heart. the floor thrums underfoot with the bass, and from between half-closed eyelids, she can see shadowy figures, and lights that flash and change, red, orange yellow, and her heart beat beat beats again again again and she can feel the blood flowing in her veins like lava a fire inside sparking up up up and oh god she feels so alive --
“kiara?” she hears her name in a whisper and wants to laugh because she still remembers when they used to shout it at her, when she stepped foot into public and was greeted with flashes, bright and dazzling and blinding, all those screams and shouts, not one of them hitting home, and now there’s nothing, except. there’s freedom, there’s relief and there’s her name, and how no-one seems to want to say it aloud anymore, and she thinks: good. you stole it, but it was never yours to say, because it was me, it’s mine, and you are never getting it back.
she sits in her room at twenty, hands steepled and fingers laced together, and she thinks: i know who i am. i know who i want to be. i know who hurt me, and they are never going to do it again.
Nala’s head turned sharply at Kiara’s slap, and she first felt a peculiar twinge of anger rise within her. But just as quickly as it arrived, it gave way to an empty sort of sadness. She delicately touched her cheek where she’d been hit. Nala kept her eyes down, let Kiara go on with her tirade. It wasn’t true, she did care. How could Kiara think she couldn’t care? It was just, she had to complete this work or no one else would. She had to go meet with the other kings. She had to watch Mufasa lay in the hospital. She had to comfort Sarabi. And her own mother. And the other royals. And she had to smile at Scar, even when his gaze lingered on her a little too long…
Nala wordlessly straightened up her chair and hugged her arms around herself. “Kiara,” she whispered. “Please.”
"No." Kiara's voice cracked and she looked away, wiping at both her eyes furiously. "I'm not listening. Bring his stuff back, bring it all back. You don't get to make this call. All of it, home. Just because you want to forget him doesn't mean the rest of us do,"
There was a lot more she wanted to say, but her outburst had exhausted her, and she wasn't willing to be in the same room as Nala for a second longer. "See you at the funeral," she spat. "But from the looks of things, you've already said goodbye," Throwing one last hateful look towards her, she left the room, leaving Nala alone as the door slammed shut.
Nala stood up and wiped her palms on the front of her dress. “It’s—it’s just what I need to get done right now. And then I have to get to work on all the memorials, and Scar keeps wanting to meet with me. Listen, Kiara I don’t want to have to do this anymore than you do okay? Maybe you should go back to sleep. Don’t worry, I’ll take care of it,” she held her arms out to Kiara, trying to hug her.
"You’ll feel better after a little more rest."
Kiara shoved Nala's arms away roughly, her vision blurring over with tears, and she raised her hand, slapping Nala hard across the face in a fit of rage.
"Don't tell me I need rest! I don't need rest! I need my cousin back! I need my uncle safe! I need my family together, and happy, and alive, and you want to throw out the last things we have of him!" She lashed out, kicking hard at Nala's chair, sending it backwards with a loud crash. It wasn't doing much for her. She wanted to slap Nala again.
"Why are you so calm about all of this? Why can't you - why don't you care?" She cried, feeling her chest start to tighten. "What's wrong with you?"
Nala frowned. “Well no…I mean, nothing worse than what should be expected. If you don’t want to now, that’s fine. I mean, I can probably guess what you and Sarabi would want to keep anyway. It’s just that there’s a lot of work to do, and I didn’t want anyone else just deciding what gets given to charity, or taken to a museum, or thrown away.”
"Scar seems to want to hurry things along too…so," she gestured at all of the things.
"It hasn't even been a week," Kiara barely restrained herself from spitting the words at Nala, feeling herself start to tremble. Tears sprang into her eyes again, all too easily, and for a moment she found herself hating Nala, and how put together she was, and how none of this seemed to affect her.
"Your best friend is dead, less than a week, and you're already - you're - that's his stuff! And you're throwing it out!" She was suddenly shouting, surprised at the volume of her voice. "Why are you doing that?! Don't you want to remember him, don't - don't you want to grieve? Why are you so calm about this?"
Nala sat at the desk in the study, tapping her pen against her chin. She was dressed in a simple gray dress, her hair pulled back into a neat bun. All around her were cardboard boxes with various things scribbled on them. Her phone beeped, but she turned it off once she heard footsteps approach.
She turned to smile at Kiara but faltered when she saw the state she was in. After a moment, Nala composed herself and smiled again, grabbing a box of tissues off her desk and handing it towards her.
"Hey," she said softly. "I’m glad you could come. I didn’t think you’d want to go to his room, so I had them bring his things here. I thought you’d like to go through them with me? Sarabi was going to come but…I don’t think she’ll be able to make it."
Kiara froze in the act of reaching out for a tissue, having been sure she'd need one. She'd been under the impression the two of them were coming together so that they could grieve, and help each other through the process. Seeing all the boxes was a punch to the gut she wasn't quite ready for, and she blinked a few times in bewilderment, arm falling to her side.
"You want... now?" She was incredulous, focusing her gaze solely on Nala, feeling anger begin to boil inside her gut. "Is there something wrong with you?"
Kiara hadn't done much since the announcement of Simba's death. It had been hard to, knowing that her constant companion was gone forever, and she wasn't quite sure how to deal with the sudden void in her life that he left behind. She had only tried to make an effort that day because she heard Nala had wanted to talk o her, but that effort only just stretched to getting out of bed, and getting dressed. Making herself presentable had been too much, and she shuffled into the study puffy-eyed and unkempt, expecting Nala to be the same; she was already speaking before she had even entered the room, voice hoarse from crying.
"Nala, I - I'm sorry I haven't spoken to you, it's... how are you holding up?"
when you were young | kovu & kiara flashback.
There are only so many days in a year that Zira lets him off his training (that is, none) and so every so often Kovu decides to give himself a rest day. These days usually coincide with the days that Nuka looks after him. It’s not that Kovu wants to get his older brother into trouble, it’s just that it’s so much easier giving him the slip than any of the lionesses in Zira’s pride who also get roped into babysitting duty.
Today was one such day. Kovu had left Nuka scratching and biting at a particularly vicious infestation of termites, as he slunk away behind the older boy’s back. The den, and all the other ramshackle buildings surrounding it, soon disappeared behind him.
The bliss of freedom lifted his feet as though they were in flight, and after some time Kovu came across a rocky shelf he had never seen before. He had never ventured so close to the border between the Outlands and the Pridelands; frankly, he couldn’t even be sure he hadn’t already crossed it. It would be nice if there was a conveniently-placed sign - “You are now entering the Pridelands” - but he doubted there would be one. There wasn’t a hint of civilisation for miles around here.
Kovu could hear the loud roar of the waterfall close-by, but could not see it; perhaps it was hidden around the corner. He ventured closer to the edge; though the cliff opposite was close enough that one could maybe leap to it, it was still a precipitous drop. Of course, no one in the Outlands had the money, the means or the will to build some sort of bar or railing to stop people falling. Now he was standing right at the edge. The water down below was calm, and he could even see his reflection blinking back up at him.
Then, suddenly, another face appeared, above his and upside down. Kovu lifted his head quickly before spying a girl standing on the cliff opposite. His immediate impression was that she seemed incredibly clean - in comparison to his dirt-smeared face and hand-me-down clothes. There was no doubt she was a Pridelander.
As was his wont, Kovu smirked and shouted something obscene at her. The words might have been lost over the waterfall’s roar, so for good measure he made a gesture equally as obscene.
This went on for sometime, and Kovu was almost beginning to be bored of it, until he saw that the girl had come rather too far out on the cliff’s edge, where there was loose scree underfoot “Hey, watch it-“
Panicking, Kovu did the first thing he could think of and leapt after her. It seemed as though she had hit a rock on the way down, and if she had fallen unconscious…
Thankfully, Kovu managed to miss hitting anything on the way down, but the impact of the water was still strong enough to force the air out of his lungs. He reached the water’s surface with a gasp, before quickly looking around for the girl. She was close by, almost sinking beneath the water’s surface, and Kovu quickly propelled himself over to clamp a hand around her arm.
Though the current was not slow, somehow, Kovu managed to get them both on a bank. They had floated quite a ways from where they had fallen. Seeing that she had regained consciousness, Kovu couldn’t stop the disdain from entering his voice. “What the hell were you thinking, Pridelander?”
Kiara didn’t immediately answer the boy’s demands, barely heard them at all over her coughs. She was bent double on the bank, clearing the water from her lungs and shivering fiercely, her head pounding where she’d struck a rock during her fall. She’d only wanted to sneak away for a little while, just until Simba and Mufasa had finished… whatever it was they were doing. She hadn’t really been paying much attention, and in the end had been sent home, just to get out of their hair, and she’d gone, and just kept going, until she got to the waterfall. It was the first time she’d ever actually seen anyone around it, and she wasn’t especially happy someone else had discovered her spot, especially not when he was talking to her in that tone of voice. Pushing her dripping hair out of her face, she coughed once more before turning to face him, remembering what Simba had told her. Never turn your back on an Outlander. She wasn’t going to make a mistake like that.
"What was I thinking? You were on the other side of the cliff!" She snapped, thoroughly annoyed. First he spent half an hour shouting at her, and now, after falling off a waterfall, he was going to keep on? No way. No dirty Outlander was going to talk down to her. "You were on the wrong side of it, too. What were you doing, thinking of taking a bath?"
He did seem a lot cleaner after the dip in the river, but not enough to endear Kiara to him, especially not when she noticed where they were - they’d been washed quite a bit downstream, and anyone from the Pridelands could stroll past and find them. What would her uncle say if he found her here?
"What did you bring me here for? I didn’t need your help! I was doing just fine without you, Outlander. Who are you, anyway?” Although she was asking the questions, she wasn’t intending on sticking around for an answer. Striding forward, she almost walked right into him, refusing to walk around him, or put her back to him for fear of… well, for fear. No-one had ever told her what exactly an Outlander would do to her if they ever caught her with her back turned, but they didn’t need to. Her imagination was over-active enough to fill in the gaps.
"Move," she demanded, the authority in her voice lessened quite a bit by her half-drowned appearance. "Or else."
Kovu was honestly completely taken aback by her response. He managed to work his jaw back up from where it had fallen to the ground, and spluttered out, “…Who am I? I’m the guy who just saved your life!” Water dripped down into his eyes, and Kovu pushed his hair back in irritation.
It seemed as though she was trying to intimidate him into moving, but Kovu didn’t move a muscle, still shocked by the complete lack of gratitude. Maybe he had been expecting too much from a snooty Pridelander. He narrowed his eyes at her. “What are you doin-“
A sudden, enraged roar sent a group of birds flying up above the horizon. Kovu knew it instantly as his mother’s - which meant that Zira had found out he was missing. (Which also meant that Nuka was probably currently getting torn a new one.)
Kovu turned back to face the girl. He was reluctant to be the one to back down, but he was also reluctant to let his older brother take the fall for him. “I gotta go.”
"Get your head checked out," were his last words as he departed.
