October is almost here and that means itās time for my favorite kind of flicks: the not-so-tall tales, the witchy, the folksy, the fantastical, the magical kind that could happen to you or me at any time or place. These are my not-quite-Halloween magical movie favorites.

I am an absolute sucker for any movie with a circus tie-in. Itās not polite to discuss religion or politics at the dinner table, you never know who youāre gonna offend. (Also see Water for Elephants and The Greatest Showman for more circus faves).

Because sometimes you need fantastic fairy tales and eccentric uncles to get through an otherwise troubled life. Donāt buy seeds from a traveling salesman. Used lions are ok though.
I only recently found this gem that features so many of my favorite tropes and also takes place in NYC. Is pure 90s gold.

I mean, Robert De Niro as a fancy pirate and Michelle Pfeiffer as an evil witch? Claire Danes as a star and Charlie Cox in all his adorable ness? Sign me the fuck up.
Need at least one modern-day time travel movie on this list. Every time I step into an Otis elevator, I think of this. Yes, itās a pure romantic comedy. No, I donāt care. HUGH.
Maybe the most serious on this list (featuring a primely unfunny Robin Williams as a villian), this movie is for music lovers and anyone who never gives up hope even when everyone tells you to.
