soon: comfy sweaters, hot beverages in cups, leaves crunching under your feet, drops of rain against the window, reading your book in bed

i dont want the d. i want the a. i want to pass this class
Line work vs. final product for a new bujo spread! (Ft. Weird spotty shadows because my window is dirty)
I’m loving this layout!
I just failed my chemistry test (part of the 5% group of F's in my class), and all I want to do at the moment is feel depressed and cry. How do you handle failure? Like getting a bad test score?
/hugs/
Firstly, cry. Let itout. Screw motivational quotes, self help books and keeping composure. Curse, scream, yell. Put on your comfiestoutfit and park yourself in bed with a book, movie, music, youtube - anythingthat isn’t study.
There’s nothingwrong with taking a time out.
Its not like thenext few hours will change your mark - so do what’s in your power right now, that being, taking care of yourself.
Resources
I’ve written abouthow I deal with failure on this studyblr before. See:
Dealing with Failure
Shit Grade? Feelingbetter after a terrible exam
This response
And this one
The first two postsinclude a list of resources, ranging from working professionals sharing theirexperiences and strategies for dealing with failure, to music recommendations, study tips and goat remixes. Something for everyone - call it my failure first aid kit.
3 Steps
To summarise, Icycle through three broad steps:
1. Immediately after the exam (aka ‘Fuck everything’)
Considerwhat you can do immediately after the exam. Nothing can get you back those fewhours you spent in the exam room. You’re not obliged to discuss yourperformance with your peers, comparing answers won’t change what you’vewritten.
Takesome time off from studying - rest, recuperate, reset.
2. Upon receiving results (aka ‘getting down tobusiness’)
Reviewmy exam: what areas did I do well in? What areas do I need to improve, wheredid I lose most of my marks? Was it a procedural error (e.g. the style ofquestion and time limits) or was a substantive error (e.g. I didn’t understandthe concept they were testing, did we evenlearn about titration). I usethis review to structure my study for my next exam.
Formal avenues of Review: was there anythingthat affected my exam performance? If so, am I eligible for a remark or resit?Has the assessment been fair?
Ask: approach teachers, lecturers to ask for feedback. How can I do better? Whatwas a model answer?
3. Shia LaBeouf it
Usingthe strategies and information I have gathered above, its time to bite thebullet and study for the resit or my next exam.
IfI have to cover similar content, I’ll find a new way to study the content (e.g.audio, video, mindmaps)
Ratherthan go through all the content, I’ll target the areas where I lost the mostmarks, whether this be by content or a particular style of question (e.g. shortanswer, essay)
A few things I like to keep in mind:
Effort can betray you
you can work hard and still fail. You canput in hours and hours of work and still pull up short. However, this doesn’tmean you shouldn’t continue to work diligently. The worth of hard work (the‘process’) goes beyond the result you achieve. The result doesn’t invalidatethe means.
Success is not a predetermined route
There aremany ways to achieve your goal. This assessment, no matter how much itsweighted, no matter how many people tell you ‘it’s the only way’ is notnecessarily the only way to achieve your goal. Life isnt a series of dominoswhich collapse once you fail this exam. Success isn’t linear.
Self Confidence
Its difficult to untanglefeelings of self confidence from academic performance, particularly if you’vededicated the majority of your life (so far!) to school etc. School is anartificial pressure cooker of constant assessments, scrutiny (and competition).Remind yourself of who you are outside of ‘being a student’ - you are a friend,a kick ass baker, master procrastinator with the endurance to pull all nightersto marathon episodes of friends. Dedicate yourself to pursuing somethingoutside (and completely independent of) school and your ‘future career’. Remindyourself that you’re human.
During the immediateaftermath of a bad exam result, its difficult to simply ‘get over it’. It feelslike it is the ‘be all or end all’ because you’ve invested so much time andeffort into studying, and up til now, the direction of your life has been definedby reference to your academic journey.
I try to keep thingsin perspective, for the sake of my sanity. This exam is only one in a series ofexams I’ll ever take. That exam only reflected my performance at one specifictime, at one specific place. It doesn’t tell the examiner who I am outside 9am-11amon a Monday morning in exam hall B. It has no bearing on my ability to be agood friend, reliable employee, awesome pet owner.
When I struggle tokeep things in perspective, I find this 'Life Calendar’ by Tim Urban helps, and the Tim Minchin speech referenced in one of the links above.
Heck, I still cry. There’sdays where I spend the entire day in bed. Sometimes, my recent failures seemjust as bad as that stupid quiz I failed back when I started high school - andI’m in my final year of university now. Failure at any stage is difficult becausehere’s the thing - you don’t have the luxury of hindsight to tell you 'thingswill be ok’.
But that’s ok.
Because I’ll get upthe next morning and try again.
And again.
And again.
And eventually, things will change. I can’t promise that they’ll get better, but they’llchange.
You’ll get throughthis anon, and I wish you all the best.

Here’s a little reminder that friends should not belittle your interests, whether personal or academic. Your answer to “what do you want to be?” should be enough. Your decision not to leave the house because you’re studying for the midterm should be enough. Your desire to pay attention in class should be enough. If you have friends that mock or disregard your desire to do well, they’re not friends worth having. Even if they don’t want to do well themselves, they should respect your desire to. Don’t be afraid to reach out and make new friends with people that will show you the respect you deserve.

song of the day - Sleepin’ by Relient K “Sit back and watch the sunset work its magic in its own true light”
hey since apparently some people didn’t know this
if your family is low income, you can take your sat for free – twice!
and as a bonus, you can waive 4 college application fees. so like if a college you wanna apply to has a $20 fee, you can use one of your freebies to not have to pay that. four times. that means you can apply to at least 4 colleges (more if you can find ones with free applications) for no cost at all.
check in with your guidance counselor and see if you qualify – at my school, we qualify if we’re on free or reduced price lunch. my waiver had 2 free act’s included too.
boosts appreciated! a lot of people don’t know about this and it can save you a lot of much-needed money. tell your friends. tell your friends’ friends
and this is all directly from the college board website so it’s legit
Lots of people at my school did this! Also look into your state college’s fee waiver options. In California if you qualify for this, you can likely also qualify to apply to 4 UC’s and 4 Cal States for free, as well as get 4 Common Application waivers!
In case any of my US people could use this for them or their kids.
actual useful study tips
i’m going to keep this short-ish and shitty and un-proofread because i only have like 6 followers but it’s finals week and i keep seeing these awful study tips everywhere that are like “drink water” and “don’t get distracted on the internet” and other unrealistic stuff like that, so here is a REALISTIC students guide to pulling ur semester together, written by a truly apathetic student still clinging onto the deans list (me). enjoy and share as u wish
1. make study plans with a distant acquaintance who you think is cooler than you. do you want their first impression of you to be 20 minutes late, saying “oops i just realized i haven’t taken notes all semester?” no u want to impress them! knowing a complete strangers opinion of you is on the line, you can use this to find the strength to make a great looking study guide, or actually add to the google doc instead of just reading what everyone else wrote. bonus points if you make plans to meet at 10am.
2. fuck the “stay focused” app. if you are anything like me you know it takes about 15 minutes max to download a new browser and you’re back to doing the same exact thing you were before, but on firefox instead of google chrome. plus, we all have cell phones, so blocking tumblr on my computer just means i have to look at smaller pictures. WHAT U HAVE TO DO is find a person you trust, preferably your parents or someone in another state/country who you can’t hound in-person and who WILL. NOT. CRACK. u give them your login information for your social media apps (i do this every finals week with Facebook and tumblr for at least a day or 2 or before my hardest exam) and you have them change your password. it’s life changing.
3. look at gifs of hermione granger and rory gilmore. literally role play as them, dress like them if you have to. they just have it so together!! how!!
4. before you leave your dorm ASK YOURSELF “do i reaaaallyyy need my computer?” and if you don’t need it to study, don’t bring it with you. don’t bring your phone either unless you need music. i am an international relations/art history major and the answer for me personally is “no” 99.9% of the time because all my exams are based off readings/in class notes. the next step is to go to the library, or wherever you study, and bring nothing but good old fashioned papers with you.
4b. if you have readings to do print them out. i kill about 8 trees per semester by printing off hundreds of pieces of paper and while environmentally i feel sort of guilty about it, it’s the actual only way i can read anything without my eyes glazing over, or ending up on style.com looking at Diors F/W 2002 collection. plus you can ~highlight~ and annotate better.
5. white noise is your best friend. rainymood.com and white noise generator are 1000x better than the most mellow spotify playlist, imo, or at least work really well in the background. (personally i don’t like studying to music with vocals because the words distract me but if white noise isn’t enough u can do sigur ros or instrumental music) however, when it’s the early morning hours and you feel like you’re about to crash show tunes can and will keep you going. i recommend “you can’t stop the beat” from hairspray and anything from mamma mia.
6. if possible, make friends with someone who has a car. burger king can make or break you at 2am.
7. TREAT YASELF. i never eat healthy during finals week and i don’t trust people who do. but if you actually get up early to study you deserve the largest dunking donuts or most expensive latte. and if you are up at 3am, yes you not only can but should get 3 different chip bags from the vending machine. (i swear crunching helps me stay awake anyways)
8. nothing is a better break than a walk outside. this is not an opinion this is a fact. even if you just go stand outside and take 10 deep breaths. or lay in grass for 2 minutes. and if it’s a nice sunset go let yourself watch it.
9. do not “dress for success,” wear the most comfortable clothes that you own (but not pajama pants or ur fucked. ANYWHERE is a bed when u r wearing pajama pants, in personal experience). also, something to get your hair away from your face/eyes (like a bandana or something stretchy though not a hard headband) is a GAME CHANGER
10. you would be surprised how not-rude people are if you mass-email your class with questions or in need of assistance. whether you need to borrow the book or missed a day (or 5) of notes, throwing an email into the wind usually won’t fail you!! *bonus tip: offer to bake cookies or buy food for who ever helps you. it will make u seem cute/friendly/thankful/desperate and they will NEVER actually ask u to follow through. i once got like 5 days of missed notes AND a girl lent me her flash cards by doing this.*
11. do your bibliography as you research!! there is officially no worse feeling than finally finishing a paper at 3:47am and then realizing you have to add in your citations and make your works cited. save yourself.
12. don’t go out less, but go home earlier. instead of skipping a party or movie night or general get together with friends completely, go from 11pm-1am. it gives you the literal entire day to still study, if you get back at 1am you can drink a gallon of water and watch a 22 minute episode of something, be asleep at 1:30am and still wake up at like 9:30 the next day to keep working. those are the best hours of any party anyways and you don’t have to miss out on the memories just for some shitty number grade.
13. if you decide to take a napping break, do it on a couch or futon with all the lights on, not in your bed. you get ur horizontal time in but it’s much more difficult to actually sleep for an entire night in this position, so you don’t have to worry about accidentally not waking up.
14. if you get really stressed look up facts about how big the universe is and how small and short lived and tiny humans are in comparison. or a ted talk about how grades can’t measure intelligence, or about how all humans are meant to be artists. OR watch an episode of BBC planet earth. this always comforts me for some reason.
i am struggling to come up with more, so there’s my realistic study guide for all my fellow students out there. enjoy finals, and remember!! 2 years after graduation employers consider it “juvenile” to include your GPA on your resume :)
july 6, 2017 - refresh

A before and after of some July spreads!
Hello friends, it me
Do you remember the other day when I told you that I sent an email to the coordinator of the MA programme that I really wanted to apply to, and I ended up rambling for four paragraphs about the relationship between mythology and modern societal hegemony and the accessibility of classical texts and I basically just got way too into it and made a dick of myself
and you were all like ‘don’t worry, passion is a good thing!! They probably won’t hire a hitman to kill you or anything like that’
well, she didn’t respond yesterday at all and I got very very worried that I’d blown my chances before I even managed to apply for the damn course, and I basically resigned myself to my own inadequacy and failings as a human being
but then I checked my inbox today, and she replied this morning!! She said that it sounded like I was well suited to the MA programme and that she actually had a vested personal interest in my potential dissertation topic, and would be willing to provide me with her own research on the topic even if I didn’t end up doing the MA, and ????
obviously, this has no impact at all on whether or not I will end up doing the MA; it’s a hugely competitive application process and there is absolutely no guarantee of anything. But her response has at least convinced me that it wouldn’t be pointless to apply, and that maybe I’m not such a fraud as I always feel when I talk about this stuff. So, now I’m going to apply for the course, which is a whole other ball game entirely. Applications are a challenge in themselves, so I’m going to try and approach it as pragmatically and thoroughly as possible. Honestly, even if I don’t get on the course, I’m just happy that I managed to impress a Doctor of mythology!
It’s only January and my 2015 is already looking crazy and I am so happy
Also today I had a discussion with my coworker about exposition in the great French novels and about our reading lists and dialogue and the death of the author and it was the best hour and a half I’ve spent with someone in a long time, because all of my friends from university with whom I could talk about this stuff have moved away and it sucks. I just like talking about books, man. It’s where I’m at.
What was the last really great conversation you had? I am genuinely interested in knowing what you all like to talk about!
Do you remember 5 months ago when I was all “I think I might apply for a little MA” and you were all like “omg go for it”
and now I’m starting the MA in September
YOU GUYS I WOULD NEVER HAVE GONE FOR IT HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR YOU
I am so emosh
Do you remember when I was super cagey about applying for an MA and kept referring to it opaquely as ‘the thing’ because I was convinced that I wouldn’t be accepted due to my atypical academic background
And then I got into the MA by basically displaying massive interest and enthusiasm and commitment and taking extra credit classes before applying
And then I did the MA and my tutor was absent and the admin team was understaffed and my grandma was ill and I got a PTSD diagnosis and I worked my arse off all year and handed in my dissertation a month late
And then I GOT A DISTINCTION
I’M SO EMOSH
Do you remember when it was January 2015 and I was like ‘maybe I’ll do this super cool MA, but I’m not really sure because my academic background is in Creative Writing, and is it really enough to just be super interested in mythology? Am I actually a huge impostor?’
Well, it’s July 2017, and I got a Distinction in the Master’s and had one of my module essays published in a peer reviewed journal and was accepted onto my choice PhD programme, and to top it all off I got to graduate wearing this
So the message here is follow your dreams, I guess, because you are capable, and because massive amounts of enthusiasm is a pretty good place to start.
