I’m sorry but there’s no amount of rationalizing in the world that will make this s7 Winterfell plot make sense.
A good plot twist is one where you can look back and see that there were things pointing you to it all along, but they didn’t add up until the Big Reveal and then it makes sense in hindsight and you have that lightbulb AHA! moment.
Remember the Red Wedding in the books? There was foreshadowing for miles, which makes re-reading the preceding chapters even more interesting, yet it still fucked everyone up because it was executed very well. It also made a lot if sense from a narrative standpoint, as did Ned’s seemingly surprise death. Ned, Robb, and Catelyn’s deaths were all necessary to send the Stark children down their respective paths and set up important plot elements.
Viserys and Drogo’s “surprise” deaths did the same for Daenerys and also made narrative sense.
Littlefinger’s death will probably happen in the books, but the messy plot-hole ridden disaster of a death that they gave him last night on the show was a disgrace to his character. It makes NO SENSE on any level, beyond the fanservicey level of most of the audience just simply wanting him dead. There was no lead-up, there was no explanation, and there will likely be no fallout or repercussions.
If you have to lead off every statement you make about this twist with “well we didn’t see this on screen but…” and “it was never stated on the show but….” and “we have to assume that…” then just honestly stop talking lol
It was shoddy writing and storytelling, plain and simple.
