Can't speak for everyone but for me yes, especially in the part of town some men grow up in being anything less that "tough and emotionless" can get you in trouble.

As an older man, 40+ this had a huge effect on my mental and emotional state in my younger days, still to this day I can cold and emotional unavailable. The negatives are not creating that connection with those I care about, talking about your emotions was considered weakness. Being mentally detached from a situation can help alleviate the feelings of guilt that would come from certain actions.

Being aware and conscious about my own issues is the reason I'm do thing deliberately. Consciously looking at what is happening and reacting to it knowing my past and choosing to be different. This isn't easy and I don't always get it right.
