The thing that grieves me the most about the prevalence of AI generated fan fic is how it is eroding fandom spaces with a growing sense of distrust. We can't maintain, let alone build, community when everyone is constantly on the lookout for the con. Yet now we feel compelled to read with our spy glasses pulled out, parsing each sentence, playing a game of "creative choice or chatbot?"

Is that phrasing indicative of a novice writer influenced by what they've read or a multi-billion dollar machine? we ask and ask and ask and ask.

It's exhausting, reading fic in one window and our tabulated list of AI Tells in the other. Tells that say nothing on their own but cumulatively, CUMULATIVELY, at an unspecified rate and frequency, but one you'll know when you see it or feel it, make it questionably unquestionably clear.

We are growing increasingly tired, aren't we, of walking into every room waiting to see if the host's outstretched hand hides a clown buzzer, ready to make us the fool. Is the donut's filling raspberry or rotten egg? We'll only know once we taken a nice, big bite.
