okkkkk so now my brain has latched onto the idea of a Beyond Birthday monster AU and refuses to let go.
the wendigo/skinwalker myths (while stretching the lore around it) keep coming back to me because they’re so present where I live, and suddenly I’m thinking… wait. I could actually set a Beyond Birthday OR Beyondlaw fanfic in Canada where Beyond is one of those creatures and write the environment from experience for once instead of googling what ceartain regions look like across the world. I also just love describing forests in my original work, so I think this would be a chance to blend my fanfic writing style and my normal writing style together. Problem for that plot would be: why is L in the middle of the Canadian wilderness?
-L is investigating a string of impossible murders caused by a wendigo ie. Beyond.
-Beyond was L’s childhood friend, disappeared years ago, and L tracks him into the wilderness without realizing what he’s become.
-Forget Canada entirely and put it at Wammy’s House. L is immediately convinced the weird new kid is not, in fact, human.
-Or Beyond is simply a skinwalker who’s so good at pretending to be human that even the world’s greatest detective gets fooled.
It just fits Beyond SORRY. The whole idea of wearing someone else’s skin. Pretending to be something you’re not, looking human while there’s something deeply, fundamentally wrong underneath (i.e how Beyond views himself being less human because of his Shinigami eyes, so you barely even have to change his characterization).
Though, you could make Beyond almost any kind of monster and it’d work. He’s one of those characters who litterally act like a cryptid, it’s baked directly into his DNA. Also BeyondL x Light (bloodmoon) would absolutely work in this AU because Beyond impersonating L to get close to Light is exactly the kind of nonsense he’d pull.
