“Oh god, as if I’d name something that ridiculous. Like this one here,” she picked up one at the front of the section and lifted it, squinting to read the tiny scrawl. “Songs Claire Saracen Sucked My Dick To.” And it wasn’t until she said it aloud that this playlist was actually about her. Claire swallowed a lump in her throat, easing back any tears that threatened to fall. Sure, she was open about her sex life - for good reason (at least she thought), but she didn’t imagine anyone actually documented a playlist about it. Clearing her throat, she set it down all the way in the back and turned to Brighton. “Tell me that there’s one about you to make me feel better.”
Brighton felt her cheeks redden as she realized just exactly what was happening, immediately feeling an immense amount of sympathy for the girl. “You’re Claire,” she said, not a question. Sad as it may seem, this wasn’t the first time something like this had happened at work. Kids made playlists for their exes all the time that they donated when things didn’t work out.
Instead of saying she was sorry, Brighton picked up the next record in the stack. “Songs My Dad That Never Even Knew I Existed Wrote About Other Lovers That Weren’t My Mom.” Of course, this wasn’t what the playlist truly said, but it was true, and Brighton was eager to make Claire feel as though she wasn’t alone in experiencing some kind of regret.
