As far as my knowledge goes, he was Robert Lightwood's parabatai. The reason why the Lightwoods took Jace in because he could've gone to anyone but Michael would've entrusted his "son" to his parabatai.

i got into a conversation with someone over the weekend about asians in the media and he – unprompted by me, completely unknowing of my abundant feelings about this topic – said, “harry shum is going to be the next big asian superstar.” so i coughed and said “oh really” and he said yes, because harry is “good looking and a good dancer and i’ve heard he’s a good actor on his current tv shows or something” and you don’t know how much restraint i exhibited when all i said was “yes.” anyway long story short even the average person believes harry’s going to take over the hollywood so heck yes baby.
