[ID: a comic. In the opening scene, a long line of men stand stationed in an arc. They wear tall black witches hats, black robes, and stand with their hands held together as if in prayer. The coloring of the comic is cool tones, almost black and white.
In the second panel, one of the men begins to tremble. His face is haggard looking, with a beard the others donât have. His neighbor has turned to watch him in his weakness.
The man says âBrother⌠I canât hold out any longer.â
His neighbor, a younger man, looks at him reproachfully. âPull yourself together!â he demands. âWe must protect the orb! It is our sacred duty.â
The older man begins to bend at the shoulders, hunched over and trembling harder. âI.. I canâtâŚâ he says. âYou must!â responds the other man without sympathy.
We zoom in on the suffering manâs face. Not only does he have a white beard and wrinkles, but his face is scarred. Tears roll down his cheeks from the pain. He says: âI have been at this post for longer than you know. I have given all I can. I am tired. BrotherâŚâ he repeats, trembling yet more, âforgive me.â
And his neighbor watches in shock as the old man falls backward, arms outstretched in death.
âNo!â shouts the other. âThe orb! THE ORB!â
And indeed, the older man falls backward over a great white expanse, which curves slightly, suggesting an enormous orb of untold size. The dead man is a mere silhouette beside the gigantic white orb.
In the final panel, the colors brighten considerably, to warm yellows and oranges. Two women walk side by side. One of them reaches up towards her face. âArgh!!!â she says, wincing in pain, âstupid eyelash in my eye.â End ID].
