*likes a character* okay now give them such a high fever they start deliriously rambling and spill all their secrets :D
characters that get sick and hide it, the way wild animals hide all signs of weakness to avoid becoming a target. they take efforts to look normal and healthy until something finally snaps, a fever spikes, the sleepless nights of coughing and feeling like death catch up to them.
characters that get sick and make a huge fuss about it, wallowing in heaps of blankets and being pathetic while their friends humour this behavior and dote on them.
characters that go from the first to the second. they used to have to hide any sign of weakness to survive, but now they're in a safer environment and they realized that their new friends would shower them in attention and comfort if they were sick. now they make up for lost time, and their friends, aware of how they used to be, are all happy to indulge them.
"Leader won't be happy about this when they get back."
"Oh I don't think they will mind," whumper said with unshakable confidence.
"You need me functional," whumpee grit out through clenched teeth.
"I need you to follow orders. That means discipline. Now open up, and that is an order."
Badly injured character rolling onto their back or side, gasping for air, eyes unfocused, pained wheezing followed by a little breathless laugh.
I love the trope, just as much as anyone, of the Caretaker being shocked by Whumpee's ingrained behaviors. Saying something and realizing just how bad it was by Whumpee's reaction.
But what if Caretaker just gently corrects the behavior?
They don't even verbalize it.
Whumpee kneels in an argument- Caretaker gently pulls on their hands so they stand again.
The moment passes.
Whumpee cowers when they break a plate- Caretaker quietly gets them a new one and cleans up the shards.
Whumpee removes their shirt and their torso is hatched with scars-and Caretaker looks at them all the same.
And it's a relief. Everyone treats Whumpee like a fragile glass thing ever since they came back.
With Caretaker they can at least, sometimes, feel normal.
Saw this and thought of you
this is so real šāāļøš
And I love every author for that, keep on hurting your favorites
Yeah I just think Whumper should pull Whumpee's hair to pull their head back and expose their throat
Just saying
And whumpee tries to control a nervous swallow that whumper (and everyone watching) totally notices.
I think a hiss should escape from Whumpee's mouth, not completely being able to to hide the fact that it hurts
[Caretaker] could feel the cold barrel of a gun pressing on his neck.
*Tell me why," [Team leader] asked, rage and despair still evident on his voice as he tries very hard to keep it together. "Tell me why I shouldn't finish you off. When you clearly didn't give [Whumpee] the same grace."
"I can help."
"Like you helped her?"
[Caretaker] didn't flinch when the barrel dug deeper. They kept their posture still, firm. Years of priming as a living weapon had long ago melted whatever fear of death they could have had, once a time. They knew there were so many worse things than death.
"You have no idea what [Whumper] was capable ofāAnd. I. Can. Help."
When the pistol whip came, they simply took it. It didn't knock them out. It was angry, and clumsy. It was desperate. [Caretaker] thought about death. When was the last time they had been afraid? When [Whumpee] took them in and nursed them back to health against her team wishes? When [Whumper] came knocking, trying to retrieve what he claimed was his own?
When they had seen the desperation on [Whumpee]'s eyes as they stood guarding [Whumper], watching each punch, each kick and each screamā
Yeah. That had been fear. Strange to feel fear, especially for someone else.
All they could do now, was roll with the hit and wait. They allowed the momentum to help them roll sideways, ending up facing down the barrel of a gun. [Leader]'s eyes were cold behind the barrel. But it wasn't what really caught their attention. What caught their attention was [Whumpee]'s body, still and deathly pale. [Medic] was resting a hand on [Teammate]'s shoulder as he rested his head on her chest.chest. Good. Good. She shouldn't be cold. Specially now. From this angle, they couldn't see her face.
[Leader] took the safety off. Maybe he would go through with the threat, after all.
"You have to keep her warm. Specially during the first 48 hours." It was a shame, really, they would have liked to see her face one last time. But it figures this was as good as they were gonna get.
"She's dead. Gone. Did [Whumper] fuck up with your head so bad you don't understand what you do? What you did?"
[Caretaker] ignored him. His eyes still focused on [Whumpee]. Not long now.
"āHer memory could be affected, but it should wear off in less than a week. She had two broken ribs before, multiple bruises, two broken fingersā"
"What the fuck are you--"
It was [teammate] that noticed first. Shooting his head up and grabbing [Medic]'s arm.
"[Leader]? [Leader]!"
"Seizures, fever, anemia can be a side effect " Despair gave room to a glimmer of confusion with something else on [Leader]'s face, as they answered back to the [Medic] that had sprung to action.
"Talk to me, [Medic]."
"I got a pulse. [Whumpee]? Can you hear me?"
"That's not," [Leader] shot his head back, disbelief dripping on his voice. Weapon lowering for a second. "That's not possible. I took her vitals, I checked--" He stammered. "What did you do? [Caretaker] what did you do?"
"As I said, I can help."
Waking Up
That moment when Whumpee wakes up all confused and scared, not knowing where they are or what's going on, and Caretaker has been sitting by their side for hours (or days) in the hospital, refusing to leave them alone in case they woke up just like this.
The care, the dedication, the soothing, the love.
More of that, please ^.^
I love hidden injuries and the discovery of said injuries with all of my heart, but--
Injuries that are just too hard or even impossible to hide. Blood rapidly soaking through clothes and staining hands when trying to cover up or put pressure on wounds. Cuts and bruises in obvious, easy to see places where clothes can't cover or keep riding up. Bones very obviously broken. Injuries so painful that it's impossible to mask it, whumpee curling in on themselves or falling to the ground out of sheer agony.
The panic of whumpee wanting, needing, to hide the injury and pretend they're okay, it's okay, they can keep going, and the immediate realisation that it can't be hidden, and everyone around them realising something is wrong.
Can't decide which I prefer -- delirious whumpees who ramble about a new thing every ten seconds because their mind is wandering relentlessly, or delirious whumpees who become fixated on one subject that they insist is important (and very likely is Not)
The many uses of Whumpee being incredibly beaten up. Covered in bruises and cuts and maybe a few gashes, add a broken bone in if serious injuries are your thing. They arenāt fatally wounded, but it looks ugly. Maybe whumper realizes they went way too far after seeing just how fucked up Whumpee looks. Maybe Whumpee is getting rescued and caretaker/ team gets to see. Maybe Whumpee is trying to hide the whump and canāt anymore. Also Whumpee just looks very weak and damaged and vulnerable, which is bad for prideful and stoic (possibly living weapons and defiant too) Whumpees.
House of Whump Game

Ohh, you picked a rather interesting one!! The whumpee trope that you have picked is a whumpee that has a sprained ankle...but on a mission???
A sprained ankle during a mission works so well in whump because it turns something āmanageableā into an immediate, ongoing problem that the character canāt just ignore.
A sprain usually isn't life-threatening, which is honestly exactly what makes it interesting, especially in tense situations. It sits in that frustrating middle ground where the whumpee is still expected to function, but every step is painful and unstable. During a mission, that creates constant pressure: they canāt move normally, they canāt run if something goes wrong, and even simple actions like climbing, jumping, or keeping pace with others suddenly become risky or slow.
It also naturally builds in forced endurance. The whumpee often tries to push through it, limping, compensating, gritting their teeth, because stopping could mean failing the mission or putting others in danger.
This makes every movement feel like a negotiation between pain and necessity. The injury becomes more visible over time too. At first it might just be a misstep or a brief wince, but as adrenaline fades, the limp worsens, balance gets worse, and mistakes become more likely.
Thereās also strong potential for tension between characters. Teammates might not notice at first, might underestimate it, or might push them to keep going without realizing how much itās affecting them. Or, if they do notice, you get conflict: do they stop the mission, slow down, or carry them, and at what cost? That decision-making adds pressure on everyone involved.
And emotionally it highlights stubbornness, loyalty, vulnerability, or fear of being abandoned or left behind. Bonus point if the whynooee is down playing their injury and constantly saying "I'm fine," whenever a teammate asks about them, or tells them not to worry about them even as they visibly struggle.
which makes the eventual breaking point, falling behind, collapsing, or finally admitting they canāt continue hit harder ć¤ļ¹ÉµĢ·Ģ„Ģ„į·
"What was your favorite part of the playground when you were younger?" Whumper asks Whumpee, escalating until they sob: "The swings."
An hour later, Whumpee is suspended from the ceiling by their wrists, Whumper trying out different lengths of rope and force to their hits to see how far they can make them swing. āCalm down, this will be over pretty soon anyway. We canāt go on too long after your shoulders dislocate.ā
My personal favourite injuries to give characters!
- blood loss (slow and the imagery of either the whumpee or someone else desperately trying to stop the bleeding! or whumpee being completely alone as it happens)
- broken jaw, it just seems so inconvenient!
- hypothermia (because, again, it is slow! especially good if whumpee is found all alone in the snow after being missing for ages)
- gunshot/stab wounds that aren't immediately fatal but will become dangerous without urgent care
- broken ribs (easier to hide if the whumpee wants to and can still lead to more complications, also limit movement quite a lot)
- any kind of internal bleeding, since it can take a while to notice (also the classic coughing up blood trope yess!)
- asphyxiation (as in someone getting choked and the bruises/throat injuries that may leave behind)
- radiation burns (some can remain unhealed for months and are a pain to manage)
- their speech/eyesight being damaged (such a good scenario to have them lose one of their crucial ways of communicating with the world)
You are an adventurer in a generic fantasy world and you use this weapon!
Do you like it?
YES!!!!!
yes
Eh it's okay
No
NO!!!!!!!
A dagger, I can work with that. Stabby time!
Easily one of my favorite Whump tropes is Whumpee being held down by two or more people, resulting in them being forced into witnessing or experiencing the terror of helplessness as they can do nothing but thrash and beg.
