Intro Post

Hi!

I go by "rabbit" online for anonymity (My IRL name is pretty strange & distinctive)

I am 19 years old, American, she/her.

I'm a college student studying Psychology and Human Development. I was a passive participant in the whump community for a long time, and joined as a more active participant about a year ago.

I'm a chatterbox, but kind of shy, so may be skittish about messaging you first. I'm always up to chat though, and am always open to finding new mutuals!

I love reading & writing, as well as drawing and cooking. My favorite authors are probably Shirley Jackson and Junji Ito. If you've read The Haunting of Hill House PLEASE be my friend, I've never met anyone else who's read it and it's my favorite book ever <3

Fandoms/interests : Classic Literature (Top books: Haunting of Hill House, The Portrait of Dorian Grey, Rosemary's Baby, Crime & Punishment, 1984) Animation, Theatre (tech/acting/directing) and music (No strong genre bias; but cannot truthfully say I listen to "everything")

I love the trope, just as much as anyone, of the Caretaker being shocked by Whumpee's ingrained behaviors. Saying something and realizing just how bad it was by Whumpee's reaction.

But what if Caretaker just gently corrects the behavior?

They don't even verbalize it.

Whumpee kneels in an argument- Caretaker gently pulls on their hands so they stand again.

The moment passes.

Whumpee cowers when they break a plate- Caretaker quietly gets them a new one and cleans up the shards.

Whumpee removes their shirt and their torso is hatched with scars-and Caretaker looks at them all the same.

And it's a relief. Everyone treats Whumpee like a fragile glass thing ever since they came back.

With Caretaker they can at least, sometimes, feel normal.

Two Whumpers who are friends with Caretaker....

Whumpers that work together to hide Whumpee in their house, who pretend to help look for Whumpee, who let Caretaker come over while Whumpee is literally locked up somewhere in the house

A wardrobe, the basement, the attic, inside the coffee table that Caretaker is sitting in front of, able to hear everything, unable to make any noise.

Whumpee listens to Caretaker worrying- the Whumpers lying- listens to Caretaker walking out the front door....

Maybe they manage to make some small noise, some thump, but it's not enough. Caretaker brushes it off. They have no reason to be suspicious of the Whumpers.

The Whumpers noticed the noise, though. And they aren't happy about it.

A Whumpee who's difficult.

Not to Whumper- but to Caretaker.

When they first came back, they were quiet, afraid, excessively grateful. They'd apologize for everything. Caretaker knew what to do then. They were gentle and always kept them from talking bad about themselves.

Whumpee starts to get comfortable and decides to start pushing back. What happens when they disagree? Can they disagree? Maybe it's not even conscious, but suddenly being told what to do starts to bother them.

Caretaker and Whumpee start to bicker. Stupid arguments. Caretaker's frustrated: what happened? They used to get along so well before...

What happens when Caretaker comes to the sickening realization that they might have preferred Whumpee when they were scared?

Whumpee who feels alienated from comfort by the time they're rescued... Whumpee that removes themselves from comfort... Caretaker keeps insisting to them that they deserve comfort so they just start doing it in secret... Moving from the bed to the floor because that's the only way they can sleep anymore...

lowkey obsessed with taking care of them, protecting them from the outside dangers.

what makes them any better than the whumper if they can't let whumpee have any autonomy?

lastly, way more clingy than whumpee themself.

Still though, a few that elaborate on the point

-Caretaker that's too coddling to let Whumpee do basic things

-Caretaker that genuinely thinks Whumpee would be unable

-Caretaker who likes to feel like a savior and ignores that Whumpee is clearly becoming more capable

-Munchausen by proxy carewhumper.... 👀

-Whumpee who has to escape from caretaker

-Whumpee who becomes jumpy about being taken care of in the future

Character who sort of narrowly avoided being a whumpee.

There was some small and innocuous choice they made that let them keep living life normally, perhaps even well.

Someone else made the opposite choice.

And when Character encounters Whumpee, and sees what's happened to them,

And knows that they just barely avoided that exact same fate?

(Bonus: Character becomes Whumpee's caretaker after the fact)

Whumpee who thinks they're better.

They've been with Caretaker for a few months. They're better. They can sleep in their own bed and they can adequately cook meals and go to the store. They can be home alone. They can be alone with their thoughts. They're ok now.

And although Caretaker says they can stay as long as they need, they cannot stand the idea of being indebted to Caretaker any longer than they have to, and now that they are better they go off to live alone.

They're good now. So it's okay.

Until the sun sets and that first night alone hits them.

i was reading some whump stuff on here and came across this awesome writer's post from last October. i clicked on his profile and his last post said "if you're reading this message then i have passed away" and it made me so so sad :(

poor boy was suffering. he said he had that post on queue which means he did it to himself which made this a thousand times worse because he couldn't write the part where the caretaker saves the whumpee

woah ok I keep seeing ppl submit stuff via askbox so I'm gonna share a whump idea if it's ok :-) imagine like. illusion magic whumper who tortures whumpee with caretakers image. they make whumpee believe that someone they love has come to save them and it's a trick every time and when somebody actually comes to help theyre scared and even hours after they're waiting for "whumper" to reveal the trick and hurt them. *gets carried away by eagles*

Yesss, I like this one too... though it's always so tricky. One version of this is that Whumper once went all the way, had "Caretaker" appear and let them get out, escape, go through all the motions and then the moment they get outside it's revealed to all be a ruse. Then they're punished for wanting to escape. So when Caretaker appears for real Whumpee resists them, mistrusts them, won't go with... maybe leading to Caretaker's mutual capture?

(Also, yea! I take asks and requests. For any readers, if you wanna share your whump idea, I'll respond and elaborate with my ideas as well! Though I do think my askbox eats asks sometimes. Or sometimes the eagles get you I suppose...)

omg I've got another. what if the whumpee uses humor as a defence mechanism:

Whumper splayed out whumpee's hand on the table and picked up the hammer from the toolbox.

Whumpee: "What? You're gonna hammer these nails?"

Whumpee chuckled at their own joke with tears in their eyes, mentally preparing themselves for what is coming.

and using the same humor as a defense mechanism post-rescue 👀 cracking some kind of joke only for caretaker/their team to wince

whumpee not meeting the caretaker/team's eye(s) after being rescued because they are embarrassed of what happened. because they couldn't escape themselves and had to rely on their team to be rescued. they feel like a loser

bonus if the whumpee was the useless or unreliable or error-prone before being taken by the whumpee so now the feeling's on a higher altitude

Ugh I love this one.

Whumpee that blames themselves for the capture... blames themselves for needing to be rescued... blames themselves for being hurt at all while captured...

And you know I'd love Caretaker who was the only one that cared beforehand, but what might be steeper here is Caretaker that didn't care before. Caretaker who really did see Whumpee as a fuck-up before.

But they can't blame them right now. Especially when they try to get Whumpee to take off their shirt to dress their wounds, and Whumpee is practically too ashamed to do so, to show what happened and they were unable to stop...

when someone (Caretaker, sibling, teammate, whoever) is made to choose which Whumpee gets saved and which one stays with Whumper, and one of the Whumpees just slumps, already resigned, because they already know they’re not gonna be picked….

I'm elaborating on this point a little actually... extra special bonus content. Imagine the person made to choose picks, and then Whumper gives back the opposite person. It spares Whumpee from whatever was about to happen, but they're left with the person who chose, knowing they were the one that person would have left behind...

How does the person who chose explain themselves? Can they explain it at all?

Whumpee who cries out in fear in a dream = good, good

Whumpee who apologizes in a dream = Even better

Think about it for a moment. Whumpee asleep beside Caretaker, perhaps in the same bed. Caretaker wakes to the sound of some kind of dry, hiccoughing sobbing. They turn towards Whumpee and find them trapped in a restless sleep, face pale and contorted.

“…’m sorry,…” Whumpee slurs, sleep sticking to their voice.

And who are they apologizing to?

Whumper? “I’m sorry, don’t hurt me, I’ll be better?”

Or Caretaker? “I’m sorry, don’t leave me, I’m worth saving?”

Whumpee soothing themselves while in captivity by thinking of something.

Curled around themselves, playing with the corner of a bandage.

The thought of a warm meal.

The thought of their bed back home.

Of gentle hands, of being rescued, of being carried halfway-sleeping,

Of being treated like they're normal.

The thought of caretaker.

Yes, that's the one.

Running the scenarios in their head until light and dreamless sleep.

Whumper who lies to Whumpee about how long it's been. How would whumpee know the difference? It's not like they have reliable access to calendars and clocks.

"It's been six months, Whumpee," Whumper says, knowing full well it's been four. "And none of them have found you yet? Hell, I bet they've stopped even looking."

Time slowly "speeds up" the longer Whumpee's in Whumper's care.

"Your birthday, already?" Whumper saunters in. "Your second one with me, isn't that right?"

"That can't be true!" protests Whumpee. "That day was a month away no more than a week and a half ago!" "Whumpee, how are you tracking that? Sleep? I'll be honest with you, Whumpee, you've been staying up longer and longer between your rests, if you're not careful you're going to get sick."

"Like you care!" But Whumpee can't deny it.

The team finally finds them. Whumpee comes shivering out. "Five years," they say. "How did it take five years to find me?"

"Five years?" says Caretaker, concerned.

"...Whumpee, it's barely been two."
