Synopsis:
After the death of his mother, Devin Maxwell joins Titan Force, an organization that collects supernatural artifacts using super powered agents. Devin quickly rises to become a brash, yet successful agent under the field name: Streetslam. He forms a pseudo family with his friends and fellow agents at Titan Force. Devin’s allegiances are put to the test after an enigmatic billionaire offers him the chance to revive his mother, but only if he turns on his new family and steals a mysterious item from the Titan Force vault.
From our latest 5 star review:
“StreetSlam is action packed to the point of rollercoaster and I love it. Where does the fight scene take place? Literally everywhere, also I think you mean fight scenes. Palatial mansion, on the open highway, a mall. The real question is where doesn’t a fight take place. The one thing I’ll say is that the fight scenes can get long. The fight scenes strike me as very anime in their style, they’re the kind of fight scenes you might find in an anime/manga like Naruto and the weapons like something out of Final Fantasy 7. As much as I loved the fight scenes, my favorite parts of the book was the characters. They were so amazingly developed and diverse. I mean, just take a glance at the cover to get an idea. It’s a stellar cast of characters and I promise you’ll come out with at least three characters that you adore. “

5/5 stars
Official Synopsis:
Inspired by actual events, X. follows the story of Tamra, a young actress, during the days following her feature film debut. The week kicks off with the arrival of her childhood best friends, Maddy and Amelia, who have flown in to help her celebrate the most important milestone of her life.
Home friends. L.A. friends. Fun parties. Exclusive clubs. Hot boys. It should all add up to equal the most unforgettable time. But Tamra is haunted by a dark secret. Unbeknownst to her friends, she is being stalked, and pressured by greater forces to keep quiet. Our leading lady has convinced herself that she needs no one’s help battling the anxiety that has only recently developed within her.
Everything is only further complicated when Lucas, the boy who has appointed himself protector and guide to Tamra during her time in Los Angeles, threatens to act against her wishes and reveal her truth.
My thoughts:
HOLY SHIT. GUYS!!! I just finished this book and I am still reeling!!
Let me start at the beginning! After reading the synopsis for this book, I was slightly intrigued. I assumed it would be a little like Gossip Girl mixed with Pretty Little Liars. I thought it would be an easy read that I could float through while still being able to take care of my other obligations. NOPE. I WAS WRONG..
X NOVEL has officially ruined my life. I started it on a Thursday, while at work. BIG MISTAKE. I couldn’t put it down! I totally neglected everything that I was supposed to do for the rest of the day! I was sneaking my kindle into the printer room with me just so I could gobble up a few more pages!
That being said, the plot for X NOVEL was enrapturing. I absolutely flew through it. The entire time I was reading I kept trying to guess WHO this book was really about, since its based on real events. AND THE CHARACTERS!!! I was shocked at how invested I became in each of their lives as I continued to read. I felt so deeply for Tamra during the first half, that it was shocking when I started to side with other people during the book.
I don’t want to delve too deeply into the plot because I dont want to spoil anyone but I will say that scene building is one of Mena’s strong suits. I loved being able to picture every situation so clearly in my head. She built this story and its characters up to a tangible thing that I could hold in my heart. I cant wait to see where Mena takes us with her work next!

Sister Mischief by Laura Goode
DNF. I tried so hard to like this book. Lesbian feminist hip-hop group from Minnesota. Hell yeah!
But, the so-called ‘feminism’ was really toxic… There was a lot of slut-shaming and gay stereotyping. And enforcing gender roles. And the line “your dad cooks like a girl” and then the whole feminist rap troupe busts out laughing like that is the funniest thing they’ve ever heard in their lives.
And the girl-girl relationship was really cute! And interracial. Yay! But that’s literally the only thing that helped me get as far as I did (which was 1/3 of the way in). I honestly tried my best to finish this book; I hate not finishing books.
Some more problems. There was no major conflict. There were lots of subplots, like romance or the quintessential ‘bitchy-girl’ against the ‘feminist girls’ :/ ugh. But no conflict that made me want to keep reading. It was so utterly boring.
The chapters are really long, which I despise so much. Shorter chapters are much easier to read, in my opinion, and these long-ass, boring-as-fuck chapters made me want to gouge my eyes out.
One feminist calling other girls bitches out of five for false portrayal of feminism and no plot.
Send me unpopular opinions about books or music and i'll tell if i agree
I haven’t fallen... I am still here...

Lucidity
Books charged me like a bull would charge the matador. When he collided with me and I snared a grip upon him I used my other arm and fist and slammed it onto his back several times before he fell to his knees. Once he dropped onto them I stepped back and lifted my right knee swiftly so it collided with his face and sent him further down to the ground until he was lying on his back. When he tried to get up from the ground I just kept hitting him and hitting him and hitting him some more. After a while I found myself kneeling over him and the bloody mess I’d made out of his face. As his already broken glasses popped up and off of his face I realized that he’d probably had enough. He wasn’t unconscious this time. We were staring at one another for a moment before I’d gotten up and I saw I’d allowed myself to become a monster. Men can be monsters without transforming their outward appearances. I allowed such a thing to happen to me as I vented nearly the full fury of my anger. I don’t know what it was that stopped me from killing the man, my brother. Perhaps, it was the reflection I saw in his broken lenses that forced me to stop? Just before I got up and just after I’d ceased hitting him I gripped his neck and squeezed it as I pulled him toward me. I whispered into his ear. “You and me are done…” I informed him. “We aren’t brothers… We aren’t family…. We aren’t friends… We are nothing to each other…!”I kept on. “You are just as dead to me as Eugene.” I released his neck and stood upright and as he lifted himself I bent down and finished by saying, “You say you know things… Well, so do I.” I grinned and continued. “I know what you did with Rachel behind my back…” even through his swollen eyes I could see the look of fear in him as he looked up at me. “You wormy little shit..!” I punched him across the face one last time and sent him over to his right but he caught himself before he completely hit the ground. I left him there and retrieved the pistol, the clip, and the bullets I’d thrown into the yard beside the two of us. As I picked them up I suddenly recalled I’d broken my promise to Cherry as I’d told Books I knew of his betrayal. “Books…” I had yelled out countless times. “Wake up, damn it…! We need you…” it wasn’t having an effect on him as he sat in his seat with his legs curled into his chest. The R.V. stopped toppling end over end after covering a great deal of ground but it didn’t come to a halt just then. Instead it rolled over and over and over again from one side to the roof and onto the other side. It rolled more times than it’d flipped and toppled. When we came to a stop we were leaning against a few cars in the middle of the road. The R.V. was also upside down as the wheels were in the air and the roof lay on the road. The windows were completely gone but despite all that it endured it nearly stayed together and in one piece. I was more shaken than I’d initially believed myself to be. I was dazed and dizzy from the wild and outrageous ride as the first thing I realized was my foot was still planted down on the accelerator. I let it fall off despite the aches and pains of being jostled around like a shaken soda in a can. I reached over and unbelted myself and went directly downward, head first, onto the roof of our trashed vehicle. I laid there for a few moments as I was unaware of all that was happening around me. As I was finally able to focus my eyes I realized Books was still belted into his seat as well. When I rolled over onto my stomach and onto the debris left from the accident I saw my right arm was bleeding badly as there was a chunk of glass implanted into my bicep. On my feet now, I looked around before I liberated Books. I saw he and I were the only two individuals inside the vehicle. I must’ve passed out because I couldn’t recall anyone leaving this death trap and I couldn’t recall seeing anyone being ejected as we crashed multiple times. All I could readily recall was all the screaming. Just as I turned back toward the front of the vehicle I saw and retrieved the rig John Reverend gave me before I left Raven Falls. The most peculiar thing happened just as I stood back upright and went to release Books from his safety belt. It was something that up to this very day I can’t explain. At first I thought I’d imagined it or I thought I may have hit my head too hard when I crashed onto the roof. I stood there oblivious to everything else afterward as I stared. I stared at his empty seat. Books vanished…. The color went out after the memories faded away. It was like I was watching everything through a broken television that had lost the ability to keep everything in color. Books was in some place I’d never been to or seen before. He was in some sort of auditorium that seated more than a few hundred people at one time. Most of the chairs within that room however, remained empty. There was a single podium with a small chalked board behind it. To its right there was a door that remained shut until a large man walked through it and stood behind the podium. He was speaking but I couldn’t hear a word he said. It was as though the sound went out the window with the color. Books, like most of the others in the room, sat alone. He seemed highly interested in what the man had to say. He seemed very enthused and excited. Then, the man left through the same door he’d entered. What astounded me the most was the fact that Books didn’t have a scratch on him. As a matter of fact he looked as everyone within the auditorium looked. He appeared to be clean shaven and fresh from the shower. His glasses were repaired too as the last time I had seen him I had shattered the lens in multiple spots. Finally, he wasn’t dressed the same as he had been the last time we were together. He was dressed in some sort of funny white robe. I have no idea how long it was before that chalk wrote my brother’s name on the board in wide and large print. From the way he looked as his name was written I’d say it’d been a while. As soon as the chalk finished writing the last letter of my brother’s name it set itself down and the letters burst out from the chalkboard and grew larger out in the air. The moment Books stood up the letters of his name slowly disappeared. He walked down the extensive stairs and I followed him until we reached the door. It was as though I was stuck in some sort of super glue that’d been poured onto the floor. I couldn’t follow him anymore and I shouted several times to him for his help but, there wasn’t a sound that passed through my lips. He turned back and looked back toward me and the auditorium as he got to the door for a moment. I reached out and called him some more but it was as though he looked right through me. Then, he opened the door and vanished into a brilliant light. When I caught up with my half-brother again he had his nose stuck in a book. This was typical of my brother as we were growing up. He loved to read. He was in some massive library but he wasn’t alone. He was with several others. There were even more people in there than there were inside that auditorium I’d initially saw him inside of. They were all neck deep in a book or two as well. Once again he’d changed his appearance as he no longer had the pony-tail he’d formerly been so proud of. He’d cut his hair into a fashionable length and it looked styled. He was wearing another robe this time and it wasn’t white. As I sat in the seat next to him the robe looked like it was black but then again that might’ve had something to do with the fact that the lighting in this library was horrible. It consisted of nothing more than candles, lanterns, and torches. The way I saw it, it was a scene straight from our high school days…! There were a few individuals who came up to Books and appeared to be picking on him. Once again I couldn’t hear exactly what they were saying but I could tell from his reaction they were making fun of him. There wasn’t any violence until one of them decided to knock the books my brother was using onto the floor. Books stood up as if he had a back bone until a much older man came down the aisle all of them were in. Then, all of them faked being friends and the others in the group who picked on Books helped to pick up the books knocked onto the floor. In the final dream I was standing in some darkened place with Books. He had a lantern in his hand and was studying the walls of that filthy place. Then, all of a sudden something caught his attention and he glanced over in my direction. Initially I believed he’d heard me and been able to see me. Until…! His eyes nearly popped right out of his skull and then he took off running in the opposite direction. When I turned to see what it was that had frightened him the color came back into my dreams. There was some sort of dark mist or cloud-like ball and a fiery ball bouncing off one another violently as they headed our way. I couldn’t move and when I got plowed by them I woke up. No matter what type of dream I had, whether it was a memory or a dream about my half- brother, it all ended the same. I’d awaken screaming at the top of my lungs. I would be lying in a pool of my own sweat and the bed in which I laid upon would be a wreck.
Jerkbait by Mia Siegert
Hey, hey, hey! If you like this thing about gay hockey players, then read THIS thing about gay hockey players! This book is a mix between the Aaron/Andrew relationship in The Foxhole Court and the anxiety and gay hockey players from Check, Please! But with more musicals!
Jerkbait is a heartbreaking novel about the relationship (or lackthereof) between these twins named Tristan and Robbie. Robbie is secretive, suicidal, gay, and worried about what will happen in the future NHL draft. Tristan, who is not as good at hockey as Robbie is, just wants to become an actor. BUT THEIR ASSHOLE PARENTS ARE SO MEAN! THEY ARE LITERALLY THE WORST (non-physically abusive) PARENTS I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED IN A BOOK.
I read this book in one night, and gasped and cried and screeched and had to cover up the bottom of the pages so I wouldn’t spoil anything.
My one problem, which is more with the characters rather than the writing. But, like I said earlier, the parents are horrible. They don’t get Robbie the help he needs after trying to take his life three times. He doesn’t go to the hospital. He doesn’t get a therapist. He is instead pushed harder to make the NHL draft. Also, Robbie’s twin brother deals with Robbie’s suicide attempts and anxiety in a poor way. He gets better, eventually. But, it made me mad in the beginning. Again, like I said, my problems were more directed at the characters rather than the writing.
I recommend this book to everyone. It’s very beautiful and poetic, but still funny (the main character writes a story about these dolphin-people; it’s pretty funny). But, trigger warning for rape/sex slavery/kidnapping (a guy who Robbie was talking to online kidnaps Robbie, rapes him, keeps him in a room), homophobia (in sports, so pretty bad), bad parents, suicide attempts, murder (in self-defense), anxiety, and catfishing.
4.5 dolphin-human hybrids out of 5 for good (in the end) relationship between twins and heart-wrenching plot
Hey, everyone! I know this is a little different from the norm, but I was asked to promote this book! I haven't read it, but if YOU read it, tell me and @sulliedward what you think!!
Proxy and Guardian by Alex London
Bruh. I love Proxy so much. Syd is such a great protagonist, and the other supporting characters stay true to themselves all throughout the novel. Syd is able to be this sixteen-year-old boy with crushes (on boys!) and friend-problems and parties, while he realistically has reservations about being some savior for a cause he’s not even sure he believes in.
Proxy features your well-known dystopian society where the upper-class people (patrons) own lower-class people (proxies). The proxies ‘pay debt’ whenever the patrons mess up in the form of physical punishment. And Syd (as your typical dystopian ya protag does) has had more punishment than anyone else, it seems. And he’s finally had enough; Syd runs away from one of his punishments (sixteen years at a labor camp!) Syd goes to the upper-class area, where he runs into his patron, Knox.
And Knox is like stereotypical player/bad boy/hacker-type/show-off/flirtatious/sarcastic/acts-like-he-doesn’t-care,-but-actually-cares-a-lot guy and, frankly, it’s amazing. He’s amazing. Syd’s amazing. Marie (another supporting character) is amazing. (Oh no… I sound like that absolute asshat Trump….) She’s ruthless and smart and takes no shit from anyone. Complete BAMF. (Bonus content… look at this entry for BAMF on urbandictionary…)
AND THEN… Guardian. It’s fair to say that I was slightly disappointed with this sequel.
I will be completely honest with you. I thought the ending of the book wasn’t that good. I watched as Syd and Liam and Marie work and work and work to find this machine… and then (SPOILER)… It doesn’t exist. And their fates are left up to chance at the end. I get that it was a plot twist, but I felt that it almost falsified the plot of the novel; it made the plot seem trivial, is what I’m trying to say. Okay, as I think about this book more, (you know how you feel all the emotions after finishing a book, and then you read reviews on goodreads for the book and then you can feel yourself agreeing with anything that the people write? Yeah, I got that rn.) I feel like the ending may not have been so bad. I think that the plot twist ending was okay (not great, per se, but okay). Maybe what I’m feeling right now are the overtaking thoughts that I NEED ANOTHER BOOK! I need to know what happens to Syd and Liam and Marie. *Cries in angst*
And there were other conflicts besides the main plot, of course: Syd and Liam’s ‘budding romance’, Liam’s conflict with Cousin, and Syd’s self-doubt and feelings of worthlessness (such an angsty teenage boy… think Harry in the Order of the Phoenix but with more self-hatred and less blatant pining for his blond enemy named Draco Malfoy). Just kidding. But, actually, that was a fair description of both characters tbh.
Okay, so the romance between Liam and Syd. I feel like we missed out so much. We only get to see the after-effects of Liam becoming infatuated with Syd (and even then, it’s mostly from the viewpoint of other characters. I need to know why Liam is in love with Syd [let me just say: thank you, fanfiction!]) I NEED MORE! I feel so gypped.
Also, Liam’s conflict with Cousin ended in a way that at first made me really angry, but, actually, as I write this review… I come to realize that I actually love how London ended the conflict between Cousin and Liam. Liam was worried about being a killer/murderer (he’s a soldier), and Liam leaves Cousin behind. Which is, like, indirectly, maybe killing him. There are other people where he was left. He *might’ve* survived. I actually really like this, now that I think about it more.
I had high hopes for the sequel; I absolutely adored Proxy! I was super excited to read the sequel! It’s fair to say that it didn’t live up to my expectations, but I wasn’t completely disappointed. (BONUS CONTENT: Alex London has a tumblr: @alex–-london )
Proxy: 5 Atticus Finches out of 5 (yes, there’s a kid named Atticus Finch… as well as Tom Sawyer…) for great characterization and different-from-other-ya-dystopia-novels plot.
Guardian: 4 muscular red-heads (hot damn…. Also, FUN FACT: I’m a (sort of) muscular red-head) out of 5 for a feeling of NEEDING MORE and (as I write this, I realize) really good character development.
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
This is one of my favorite books. I reread it every summer, just to feel that buzz in my chest that I get from this novel.
Beautiful writing accompanies heartbreaking plot. Rereading it is even worse than reading it the first time, mostly because you know what happens and you just. Don’t. Want. It. To. End.
Fun fact: I recommended this book to a girl in my English class, and when she finished it, she yelled at me for making her read it, but then thanked me for making her read it. It’s that kind of novel.
You will cry tears of joy and tears of sadness. You might squeal. Either way, this novel’s exquisite prose will make you feel things™. This novel is so quotable that I have several shirts made, quotes on my wall, and quotes on my main blog. It’s also that kind of novel.
Greece in the age of heroes. (What a lovely way to start a blurb, Madeline.) When Patroclus is exiled, he slowly becomes friends… and then something more… with the young Prince Achilles. In this heart-wrenching retelling of the Iliad, readers get an intimate view of the life of the well-known hero Achilles and the relationship between him and Patroclus. Told from the viewpoint of Patroclus!
Bonus Material: There is a possible miniseries coming out?? I’ve heard rumors, I think??? And there is a play version of it on YouTube: here.
5 figs out of 5 for beautiful prose and the purest relationship I’ve ever seen.
