Batman the Playboy

Justice League, not quite early days but before proper identity reveals, though everyone knows Batman knows theirs, bc he has Opinions™ and Constructive Criticisms™ on their secret-keeping.

The issue is brought up on random occasions. The most notable incident- the Justice League, including Batman, being Drunk for Bonding, (or hit with some kind of drug while out saving the world) and Batman, in a fit of paranoid good intentions because he CARES about these idiots, damnit, why must they be so careless, starts insulting them.

Batman, leaning heavily on the table: “GL, you’re a mess, I don’t even know where to start with you. And Arrow! Your goatee is so distinctive, it’s a wonder no one has called you out on it-“

Green Arrow, also drunk: “Alright, there’s no need to insult my awesome facial hair-”

Batman, in despair: “It’s so ugly.”

Green Arrow: (offended noises)

Green Lantern: “Okay, the only reason you know our secret identities is because you’re a rude nosy bastard who needs to know everything about us like a creepy stalker who needs an ego boost! We’re not stupid, Spooky, we’re just polite. We could figure you out easily if we wanted to. Superman can see right through your mask!”

Usually, Batman would have a good response to that. Something smart and reasonable like “villains won’t care for your privacy, I’m testing you,” or something cutting like “I don’t care enough about you to go digging, I set your secret identity as a training exercise for Robin.”

However, Batman is Drunk, because for some reason imbibing drugs that dampen higher brain function is socially acceptable and often, for some reason, expected, because it’s “team bonding” and “come on just loosen up a bit.” (Also for him, drunk=Brucie)

So what Batman ends up saying is: “I could kiss you full on the lips in my secret identity and you wouldn’t know a thing.”

Superman, plucking the glass from Batman’s hand: “Aaaand that is enough alcohol for you!”

Batman nods. Thank God. He wants to go home and sleep. But first: “Superman, yours is so stupid it’s almost impressive-”

Of course, Green Lantern has smelled a challenge. And Green Lantern must annoy Batman. It’s his true superpower. So, the next time they meet (sober) he brings up the issue again.

GL: “So about what you said at the party… the part where you could kiss us full on the lips without us knowing. You still confident in that without liquid courage, Spooky? Bet you your real name you can’t do it.”

Batman, regretting the fact that alcohol has ever passed his lips: “I could do it, but I will not.”

Flash, curious: “Why’s that?”

Batman: “Informed Consent. I will not risk making any of you feel violated, or manipulated, for the sake of a stupid bet and my ego.”

GA, still offended by the goatee comment, trying to back Batman into a corner: “So if we give consent, we’re fair game? Try me, Batman. Even you can’t pull this off. Anyone else game?”

Some of the Justice League laughs, raising their hands.

Flash: “Come get me, hot stuff! I’ll call you out!”

Wonder Woman: “It could be amusing.”

Martian Manhunter: “I would be far too difficult a target.”

Green Arrow: “Not just you. C’mon, Spooky, flirting well enough to get a kiss from me? I’m a classy lady.”

Black Canary: “D-class, maybe.”

Superman, wants a kiss in on the fun: 🙋🏻‍♂️

“So that’s it then!” Green Lantern says smugly. “Batman, if you can kiss… how many people raised their hands? Ah yes- HALF THE JUSTICE LEAGUE, without anyone realizing it’s you, then you win.”

Batman scoffs and walks out, leaving the Justice League in stitches at their joke. Because- Batman? Being good enough at flirting to land a kiss on half the league, without it being forced or awkward, without them recognizing his body language, his voice, his build? How ridiculous!

The Batman is Autistic. The Batman does not understand jokes, especially not ones that are half truths. The Batman has consent, and something to prove.

And Bruce Wayne, billionaire, playboy, and sexy DILF, has targets.

Batman’s grin would fit better on a supervillain, before he suddenly, miraculously, transforms. He leans back, tilts his head, the smirk isn’t evil but instead inviting and amused: “Really, Mr. Jordan, your job is just so fascinating… tell me more about planes…”

GL: 😨

Batman, turning on the rest of the league, one by one, changing his body language ever so slightly for each person: “Mr. Allen, I do hope you’ll entertain me again if I’m ever back in central, I had a grand time. Dinah darling, I stand by what I said, Ollie was SO much nicer to kiss when we were in college. Princess, the boys and I are in your debt. Mr. Jones…”

Batman’s mind goes no thoughts, head empty. Martian Manhunter is both impressed and embarrassed, nodding in understanding as Batman turns to the final hero, smiling sweetly, brain still empty as a blank sheet of paper: “And, Mr. Kent…”

Batman steps closer, hand on Superman’s chest, hip cocked, Brucie Wayne smile in full effect: “Our conversation got… cut off, the other night, because I wasn’t sure if you’d be okay with me going further, which is a damn shame. Call on me, won’t you?”

Superman, realizing why a very eager Brucie Wayne stopped their makeout session short: “…huh? OH- um.. uh huh.”

Green Arrow, short circuiting: “No fucking- BRUCIE? How? How is that possible?”

Batman, backing away from a shutdown superman, the physical mask on his face hardly the most effective one in his arsenal: “Because I’m Batman.”

a few months later:

GL: “So this big old money billionaire guy in gotham is connected to this, i think he’s called Wayne or smth.”

Justice league: “…”

Flash, had a FULL DAY of Brucie and was VERY aware of who he was with: “Uh… Hal?”

Green Lantern, who heard Bruce’s name in passing, while distracted, under loud club music + has tried to erase that night from his memory: “what?”

Batman, under his breath: “We can find your secret identity so easily, batman, you’re not that good, Batman, we’re just being polite, Batman.” Sure you fucking can, Jordan. You know, it’s polite to remember the names of people who you’ve fondled.”

Bi!Dean: Origins

Rewatching the Supernatural pilot episode today, there’s a line that stood out to me that I’ve missed on previous viewings. When Dean is arrested in Jericho and the Sheriff is interviewing him, they have this exchange:

SHERIFF: I’m not sure you realize just how much trouble you’re in here.

DEAN: We talkin’, like, misdemeanour kind of trouble or, uh, squeal like a pig trouble?

“Squeal like a pig” is a verbatim quote from the film Deliverance, making explicit reference to male rape, which is hardly comic fare - except that Dean is smirking as he says it:

Earlier in the episode, Dean mocks the Jericho police for their lack of leads on the case, calling it “exactly the kind of crack policework I’d expect out of you guys.” Deliverance is set in the Georgia backwoods, while Jericho is in California, and as such, there’s an element of insult to the reference here: Dean is basically calling the the Sheriff a hillbilly.

But given the framing of this shot - the Sheriff looming as he pulls out a chair in the foreground, Dean small and smirking up at him from the back - it seems plausible to argue there’s another element in play here, too. Eric Kripke, the show’s creator, who wrote the pilot episode, has acknowledged that Dean was both named after and inspired by Dean Moriarty of On The Road, who was bisexual both in Kerouac’s fiction and in real life, which makes the question of Dean Winchester’s bisexuality a valid question from the off. If all Kripke - and, by extension, Dean - wanted to do with this exchange was insult the Sheriff, there are any number of other references, cinematic or otherwise, to have chosen from. Instead, we’re given this one, which arguably casts not only this exchange, but Dean’s arrest, in a different light.

Earlier, when the Jericho police confronted Dean about his fake IDs, the arresting officer asks him, “You got anything that’s real?”. To which Dean, grinning, replies: “My boobs.”

And then we get this shot, just to round it out:

Thus: in the course of his arrest, Dean makes two overtly sexual comments to male police officers in conversations that were otherwise devoid of sexual overtones, one of which feminises Dean, and the other of which references male rape, though his delivery renders the impact somewhere been banter and innuendo. We’re also shown him smiling as he’s bent over a police cruiser, the camera zooming in on his expression, and as with his subsequent interview, the framing of this shot is suggestive in its own right.

How, then, does Dean behave around women? Consider his earlier, similarly loaded exchange with Jess, which is usually taken as establishing Dean’s particular brand of straight,overt masculinity. If it’s reasonable to assume that Dean is flirting with a woman he already knows is taken, when her partner is physically present, and who he has every reason to think won’t be interested in him, then it seems just as reasonable to assume that he’s flirting with the Jericho deputy, Jaffe, who’s equally unlikely to reciprocate.

As such, it’s worth comparing the two conversations - and Dean’s reactions to them - in greater detail. Speaking to Jess, Dean says:

DEAN: Oh, I love the Smurfs. [Referring to Jess’s tight, cropped shirt.] You know, I gotta tell you. You are completely out of my brother’s league.

JESS: Just let me put something on.

DEAN: No, no, no, I wouldn’t dream of it. Seriously.

And here’s his grin as he wraps the exchange:

JAFFE: So. Fake US Marshal. Fake credit cards. You got anything that’s real?

DEAN: My boobs.

In each of these shots - with Jess, Jaffe and the Sheriff - we have the person Dean is addressing shadowed in the foreground. In each of these scenes, Dean makes a sexually loaded comment, then grins at the other person. And in each of these scenes, there’s a power-play going on that Dean is attempting to manipulate by making things sexual: with Jess, he’s insulting her so she’ll happily leave him alone with Sam; with Jaffe, he’s distracting the deputies from asking about his brother; and with the Sheriff, he’s maintaining an air of bravado while under arrest. Yet, thanks to heteronormativity, we only take the exchange with Jess to be representative of his actual sexual preferences - even though, in context, she’s the person least likely to act on the flirtation.

On the basis of all these things together, I’d therefore argue that Dean’s bisexuality has been implied since the pilot episode, and continues to be implied - and, at times, outright stated - for the next ten seasons. In fact, I’m almost tempted to do an entire Supernatural rewatch just to prove the point.

the first shot after the cold open is of the word ‘bi’ and nothing else, followed by the second shot, which is of course a shot of dean

says bert and ernie are gay right before telling cas he’s not going to let him die a virgin. how do these things correlate?

dean makes two references to queer characters- thelma and louise and bert and ernie

cas and the orgy girls are waiting for dean to get there before starting the orgy, suggesting it’s something dean takes part in and is a normal part of their lives at the camp. 2014!dean is obviously comfortable enough to let cas see him naked, at the very least

dean canonically likes to wear woman’s underwear. while this doesn’t necessarily mean he’s bisexual, it does show that dean does project stuff like this (onto sam mostly, which we saw when dean asked sam if the bra was his) and it also shows that dean isn’t the macho man that he appears to be on the surface.

dean is visibly bothered by the fact cas is going on a date, but hides it from cas

fan fiction gaps! there’s actually two in this episode- even though only one is really talked about. there’s one before they get to nora’s, from when cas asks for a ride (in which it’s daytime) and when they get to nora’s (at night) and there’s another one after nora’s, in which they leave (at night) and get back to the gas n’ sip the next day. what did they do during those hours? we’ll never know.

dean says ‘you’re human, now’ and pointedly looks at cas’ lap. (meta)

their goodbye is decidedly not how you would say goodbye to a friend. if you were to take out that scene and place it into a gay romance movie, it would fit in perfectly.

dean tells cas to take off his vest and unbutton his shirt, then seems to check him out.

nora doesn’t look back at cas after their last scene together, like it seems she would. dean does.

9x12- sharp teeth (watch)

dean gets back to the bunker and sam asks what happened to his arm, to which answers ‘oh, it was a gft from cain.’ sam then asks ‘like…the wrestler?’ (like seriously, what does sam think does in his spare time? go out and roll around with wrestlers?) dean then answers ‘i wish, that would be awesome.’ long story short, dean wants to get pinned down and roughed up by a wrestler.

9x13- the purge (watch)

’best of both worlds, salty and sweet’

instead of telling sam about canyon valley he shows him a video instead, which coincidentally involves a hot (occasionally topless) dude that is definitely dean’s type

acts awkward towards larry when they met, getting lost in his eyes and grinning a lot (meta)

guy tells dean to stop flirting with his trainer, assumes dean is into guys

dean says he relates to a girl saying it’s nice to have cushion when having sex with a guy.

jenna confirmed queer while coincidentally being paralleled to dean and wearing the same colors.

11x03- the bad seed (watch)

dean and cas are very touchy-feely, dean finding any excuse to touch him, with the blanket, helping him up, unbuttoning his shirt etc. he also strokes cas’ thigh and hold his hand in the warehouse scene.

11x04- baby (watch)

dean hooking up with a guy in the roadhouse. (meta)

now if you compare this list of bi!dean moments with the list of straight!dean moments, you can definitely see that the proof for bisexual dean vastly outweighs the proof for straight!dean. which isn’t hard, as there isn’t any proof for straight dean; which i’m gonna prove for you real quick right here:

1. people like to use the fact that dean said he ‘didn’t swing that way’ to prove that he’s straight, when in fact, it’s null and void. no closeted queer person would come out to a random person, especially an enemy, which dean was speaking to each time he’s said something along those lines. when dean is approached in a non-platonic manner by non-enemies, though, he doesn’t say ‘he doesn’t swing that way.’ or deny his sexuality whatsoever. (for example, with aaron.)

2. people also like to argue that the fact dean has never kissed or had sex with a man on the show means he’s not bisexual, which isn’t true. a person of any sexuality can have never kissed or had sex with anyone, and it wouldn’t lessen their sexuality. (for example: charlie was still as much of a lesbian before she kissed gilda as she was after.)

3. then of course there’s this interview that kripke did. this is not evidence against bi!dean! eric kripke, the show’s creator, has never called dean straight. he said that he thought the dynamic between sam and dean (who are brothers) is not unlike the dynamic between sebastian and miles from revolution (being the topic of the interview), who are two straight men. this quote by him is often used out of context by people trying to disprove bisexual dean by saying that the two straight men he’s talking about are sam and dean, when the people in question aren’t even on supernatural.

but yeah, carry on saying dean is straight if that’s what floats your boat, and if you do happen to know any evidence for straight dean, i’d be happy to debunk it for you ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
