The representation of sound in the pre-oscilloscope era. Experimental Science. 1895.
Images that show sound waves made visible using Rudolf König's manometric flame apparatus, in which pressure variations of sounds caused a gas flame to surge and shrink in sync with the incoming sound. A rotating mirror converted the rapid flickering into a stable horizontal pattern, in the same way that a strip of film lays out a sequence of movie frames side by side, turning what was a sequence of events in time into a readable pattern in space. As long as the same tone was sustained, the pattern held steady in the mirror, giving an observer ample time to trace what they saw onto paper. The four examples capture a steady tone, a musical trill, a complex chord-like sound, and a deep low-frequency wave.
