My Ironman helmet - made of plastazote foam and liquid plastic
Graduation and the next step.
So I’ve come to the end of my three years at university studying props, set and scenic painting for theatre and film in Rochester. My graduation is in a week and a half and I can’t believe how quickly it has all gone. I feel proud of how far I have come and the new skills I have gained and can demonstrate.
Just the other day I presented my work at the London New Blades exhibition, surrounded by many other universities also presenting they own work. The whole event lasted 12 hours were I was on my feet the whole time, was a very tiring experience and here in England it was 26• which made it unbearably hot in the studio. This experience was a great way to show your work and skills to many industries within your field and hopefully get contacts for future work. Fingers crossed I hear back from the people who took some of my business cards.
My next step is to continue some work experience at my local theatre taking on the role of props manager for the play ‘Arcadia’.
I will also start small projects of my own to build up my portfolio and expand my skills for future work and then I hope to find a job in a studio or even a production company.
Wish me luck! :)
My big sister costume and lizard mask at the New Blades exhibition in London.
the helmet is amazingly detailed but alittle too big. ;-; dont forget big sister helmets were very small
Thank you :) I know the helmet has always been a problem for me. I couldn't find a sphere to work on the right size so I had to work with what I got.
Big sister - Bioshock 2 costume.
Wearing the helmet and breastplate. The head is slightly bigger than intended. Not too heavy either. Quite pleased with it.
Project update. Big sister costume
The big sisters gas tank has been built and painting has begun. Got some of my fellow students to help out with the kids drawings, we all had fun painting like we did when we were young. (The cage will be added soon)
The first little fish on the helmet.
Breastplate finished for the Big sister costume.
Helmet spray painted silver :)
Had a lot of set backs and difficulties making the helmet. It's slowly coming together.
Primer was applied to both the breastplate and helmet. The breastplate was then sprayed with a silver metallic paint and the rims a copper colour. This is just a under layer as they will be distressed to look worn and dirty. They need to look like the Big sister had worn these items for a while and been in combat. The main detailing will be water rusting around the edges as Rapture is underwater after all.
The next stages are taking place. The details have been marked out onto the sphere and the porthole gate has been cut and primed.
My Big sister Helmet and breastplate construction so far.
This is my final project drawn design. What you see here is costume props for the Big sister character from Bioshock 2. I intend to make the helmet and breast plate from Fibreglass and paint it to look like metal. If I have time I will also attempt to make the gas tank and basket.
Next project proposal
This last project for my university course is a great chance to try something completely new. I can test my skills with anything.
I am going to re-create a scale model of the city Rapture from the games BioShock. Either I will make individual buildings or a selection in the Art Deco style they were described in the games and the Book which is the prequel to the games.
To push myself further I will look into making these models equipped to sit in a tank of water. This will capture the real feel of the underwater city built by Andrew Ryan.
