Thinking about Dirties Matt and this particular part of Sin Triangle by Sidney Gish

I don't actually think Jay would have done the shooting with Matt. The difference between Jay and Owen is that Owen didn't understand Matt and so he gave up on him. Jay would have taken him seriously, would have intervened in some way, and there's no movie in that. It's not a movie about Matt not having a boy to shoot up a school with, it's a movie about never being seen and the extent one can go to to be seen. If Dirties Matt was loved genuinely, the second he brought up the idea, his best friend would have gone down a laundry list of reasons why thats dumb and bad and they would have made some other stupid little movie. But Owen sees Matt as his crazy, inexplicably absurd friend who just says things. He's naive when it comes to Matt. They have fun together, but it's a shallow sort of fun from his perspective. Matt comes across as such because of his autistic little bits and his media obsessions, but none of thats shallow to him, its the most serious thing in the world. And a true Jay stand in would have seen that. Its a movie about not having someone who understands you enough to save you from yourself

It's very easy to read Matt from The Dirties as trans (is alienated and bullied by her male peers, the whole Malkovich Malkovich/"if I was the last woman on earth" thing, etc) but it must be said, viewing the movie through that lens means Owen (who faces similar alienation and bullying) is near exclusively friends with girls, which is, well..
