If You Walked a Mile in My Shoes
If You Walked a Mile in My Shoes By Carolyn A.W. Michalsky If you walked a mile in my shoes, you will first notice the orthotics for my plantar fasciitis. It's going to be a long and painful walk. Don't forget to stretch. When walking a mile in my shoes, you will notice that I don't wear rose colored glasses, that not everything's sunshine and rainbows. Everything is much darker, more foreboding. This isn't a walk in the park. While walking a mile in my shoes, you might, very suddenly, feel a heaviness in your chest. It feels like grief, the same pain you feel when you lose someone very important to you. You'll see, as you walk a mile in my shoes, that everything is much darker. Your thoughts will wander into deep and dark places. You'll wonder if your life is worth living. Often times you'll feel that it's not. When you walk a mile in my shoes, you will feel trapped. Trapped by the endless feeling of worthlessness, loneliness, hopelessness, fear, and anger. You try to fight it, but it's a hard battle to win when the enemy is yourself. Perhaps, while walking a mile in my shoes, you feel happy and full of energy. You'll float in this little bubble for a little while, then something pops the bubble and you're back into the darkness. Often, when you walk a mile in my shoes, you will feel anxious. You feel as though the world around you is collapsing all around you. Your fears and worries fuel the anxiety, and soon the anxiety takes control of your body. Your muscles begin to seize up. You're paralyzed. You have to let it pass. It leaves you drained. You will soon realize, while walking a mile in my shoes, that bipolar disorder and autism spectrum disorder isn't just mental. ASD is actually a neurological disorder. It comes with friends with physical symptoms. You might feel, when you walk a mile in my shoes, a sharp pain in your abdomen, usually on your right side. It feels as though you've been stabbed. You'll also feel pressure and cramps, usually on the left side of your abdomen. Beware of nausea and vomiting. You might also feel, while walking a mile in my shoes, intense pressure and cramps in your pelvic region. Is it your period? No, the doctors haven't figured it out yet. Although, one suspects your bladder. Every three months, when walking in my shoes, you will pressure and very painful cramps in your pelvic region. This time it is your period. Why every three months? You have a problem with ovarian cysts and irregular periods. Your OB/GYN prescribed a medication to help regulate your cycle. But, the PMS is the worst. Your usually clear skin breaks out, you feel fatigued, you want to kill everyone, and everything pisses you off. The cramps feel like claws are shredding your uterus. Once again, beware of nausea and vomiting. You'll feel, as you walk a mile in my shoes, an intense pain in your head, usually around the temples. It feels as though you've been hit with a hammer. It's a stubborn pain, you can take ibuprofen, acetaminophen, or naproxen and you can put ice or heat on it and try to sleep it off in a dark and quiet room. The fucker won't quit. It can last for days. Again, beware the nausea and vomiting. While taking a walk, a mile in my shoes, you will feel some pressure and pain in your back. It's usually centered in the lumbar region near the spine. The pain travels down into your left knee. A knee brace is highly recommended and stretching your back helps. When you finally finish walking a mile in my shoes, I hope you realize that I am not as I seem. I may look happy and healthy, but that's just a mask. Please don't judge me. My shoes may look like comfortable sneakers, but my journey feels like pointed toe stilettos in mud.

The American Thanksgiving
The American Thanksgiving has been a tradition for centuries. The first Thanksgiving on American soil is believed The American Thanksgiving has been a tradition for centuries. The first Thanksgiving on American soil is believed to have occurred in 1621, though there is scarce documentation of that. When the Colonies became the United States of America after the American Revolution, there were many attempts to fix a date for the holiday, from the Founding Fathers in the late 1700s to Abraham Lincoln in 1863. No matter how the Thanksgiving came to be, it is a holiday for all. The Traditional Story of the First Thanksgiving The traditional story of the First Thanksgiving tells that in 1621, English Pilgrims broke bread with the local indigenous people to celebrate the harvest and to praise God. The Pilgrims are believed to be passengers of the iconic Mayflower. There were about 102 passengers and about 30 crewmen, all with different reasons for leaving England. The Puritans were “fleeing from religious persecution” (not true, they were fleeing from the lack of religious persecution. King James’s wife, Queen Anne, was believed to have been a Catholic, Puritans hate Catholics. The king wasn’t rounding up and jailing Catholics the way Queen Elizabeth had done. The Puritans believed that everyone should believe what they believe and worship how they worship, religious extremists some might say. The Puritans were not being persecuted, but mocked and ignored, so they stormed off to a new land). Some aboard the ship were seeking fortune, as the Spanish had in the south. Some passengers were indentured servants, their passage paid for by the rich in return for their servitude (however some of the children were orphans, foundlings, or sold by their impoverished families were basically slaves). The Native Americans who are believed to have been in attendance of the feast would have likely been from the Wampanoag tribe. Tisquantum aka Squanto, from the Patuxet tribe and former slave helped the Pilgrims and served as mediator with the sachem (chief) of the Pokanoket tribe, Massasoit. It is believed that Massasoit and members of his tribe partook in the feast as well. The feast itself is said to have consisted of turkey, potatoes, fruits and vegetables, fish and shellfish, and the beloved pumpkin pie. As I said earlier, there’s a lack of documentation to show what did and did not occur or who was and who was not there that evening. Thanksgiving in the USA After the conclusion of the Revolutionary War, our Founding Fathers wanted to have a fixed date for Thanksgiving. At the time, a thanksgiving proclamation would be made to celebrate the blessings of God. The proclamations would be made by church leaders, however, our wise Fore Fathers had decided that there should be a separation of church and state. President George Washington declared November 26, 1789 to be a day of thanksgiving for the new nation, but did not set it as the national holiday date. Each state had its own date for Thanksgiving until 1863. During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln wanted to unite the divided nation by declaring the final Thursday of November to be the national Thanksgiving Day in 1863. However, the Confederate States were opposed to it because, as it is true to this day, the guy they don’t like declared it. After the War and the country was united, the last Thursday of November became the national Thanksgiving Day.… until December 26, 1941. President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed a resolution with Congress to change the day of Thanksgiving from the last Thursday to the fourth Thursday of November. His reasoning was that it could be a booster for the economy if the holiday came a few days sooner. A Holiday for Everyone While the origins of the holiday were religious, the American Thanksgiving is a holiday for people of all faiths and ethnicities. America is a tossed salad of cultures. Every family has their own traditions. No two menus are the same. No two recipes are identical. That’s what makes Thanksgiving so great. Happy Thanksgiving!!!!!

14 1/2 years since Devin died of this disease and nothing has changed. Why? Because childhood cancer research is so very underfunded. Why? Less than 4% of federal grants go specifically to children's cancers. Why? Because the government has their heads up their asses. What about pharmaceutical companies? What are they doing? Not a damn thing. Why? Because childhood cancer drugs are not profitable. Profits over people. Profits are always more important than dying children, right? Progress has been made for the most common types of childhood cancers, but the rare ones are still a death sentence. Neuroblastoma isn't as common as leukemia or lymphoma or brain tumors, but it exists. It's a killer. Little Jessica Whelan is going to die. There's no stopping that. Little Jessica is suffering from intense pain from this cancer. 14 1/2 years since Devin died, little Jessica is dying from the same cancer. Little Jessica is only 4 years old. Please note that at the time of this writing, I do not know if little Jessica Whelan has passed or not. It has been a few days since I've heard an update and it was very grim. If you want to help find a cure for childhood cancer, donate to St. Baldrick's: https://www.stbaldricks.org/fundraisers/mypage/2127/2016
Open Letter to My Girls
I'm not a mother, yet, but since I was 12-13 I have been a babysitter/nanny. That's over a decade of experience. I've cared for a range of children over the years. I want to write a letter to my girls. Some of my girls aren't old enough to know what's going on; some of my girls have some sort of awareness of what happened; 1 of my girls is in college and just voted in her 1st presidential election (WTF?! How can she be old enough to vote?! I'm old!). I have strong maternal instincts, even though I'm not yet a mother. I want to protect my girls and boys from everything that's bad. However, this abomination of an election will affect my girls more. This letter isn't just for my girls, but all girls. Dear Girls ES, NDP, LDP, HO, FK, MK, CE, KM, DE, FG, SG, SAW, SKW, SD, AD, VH: Where do I begin? We were on the verge of electing the America's first women president. Instead, the electoral college elected a very bad man. We have failed you. The president-elect Donald Trump is a kind of boogeyman. He believes it's ok to touch women's private parts without their permission. However, that is not ok. Nobody has the right to touch your private parts. That is called sexual assault and it's illegal. If anyone touches your private parts, tell your mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, a teacher, or, of course, me. We will file a police report. We do our best to make sure it doesn't happen again. Donald Trump believes it's ok to mock women on their appearance. However, that, too, is not ok. Teasing someone on their looks is a kind of bullying. Bullying is not ok. If someone makes fun of how you look, tell the teacher. However ignoring the bully's words is the best way. Remember, the most important people in your life see you for who you really are: a strong, smart, and beautiful young woman. Haters are going to hate, so love instead. Donald Trump believes it's ok to say mean things about people on Twitter. However, that, again, is not ok. Saying mean things about people on social media is called cyber bullying. If someone is saying mean things about you on social media, just block them. You don't need that kind of negativity. You have better things to do than to deal with that. You're going to do great things, don't let the haters pull you down. Donald Trump believes it's ok to mock people with disabilities. However, once again, that is not ok. People who have disabilities are human and have feelings too. They are not something to be laughed at. Some disabled people cannot speak for themselves. So I ask that if you see someone bullying someone with disabilities, please step up and be their voice. Donald Trump believes it's ok to disrespect people who are of a different race or religion, or if they are from another country. However, again, that's not ok. Discrimination is wrong both morally and ethically. It's ok if someone doesn't share the same religion as you. People who have a different skin color than you are still people. We are all the same on the inside. America is a nation built by immigrants. Many people seem to forget that. It's ok if someone is from a different country, odds are, your ancestors came to America from another country, too. Peace, Love, and Strength. Love, Cara
